Cade, Week 1. J.J. Week 2.....

Submitted by Wings Of Distinction on August 28th, 2022 at 7:03 AM

Honors Captain Cade with the first start. And rewards JJ with strong performance in an enlarged capacity.

What else you gonna do? I think it makes sense. Give the kid a chance at a start. Increased snaps and responsibility.

His talent and contribution deserves such.

Boy oh boy, How this reminds me of a similar situation in years past.

But as much Cyan as some might throw, I still know a quality starting QB when I see one.....And to be honest, JJ still has more to prove before I put him in Drew Henson at this point, category.

GO BLUE.

Harbaugh said points per drive several times as a major factor. Simple as that. Who gets us more points per drive. I don’t think there’s a decision to be made here. Both are gonna play and start until one shows himself to be superior

I think this is just saying these two are pretty much dead even and they will each be given a game to show they should be the starter. The final test to see who will lead this team into conference play. I look forward to watching both and see how it plays out

Tough to go by straight points per drive because it doesn't factor how a drive might end (punt >> TO) or the opponents.

CSU is bad but Hawaii is aawwwwwwwful on defense.  Last in every category Alex evaluated.  They gave up 63 (!!) at home to Vandy.

Needs to be a feel, can't just boil it down to one metric (which I'm sure they won't).

If both young men are performing at a high level, good problem to have. It's fun to weigh their merits--so far as we can see them. But I'm not always convinced that this should be a controversy or subject to be annoyed about.

Clearly I support coaches thinking and acting "outsidethebox". I fully support this move-it's border-line brilliant. You have the players and the schedule to take a look...why not take full advantage. If either Cade or JJ has a problem with this plan-that is truly their individual problem...you are being given a fair shake-make the most of it. I am sure Davis Warren will be more than happy, and capable, to move up to the first back-up position.

 Many need to accept reality.

CAPTAIN CADE is the starter.

CAPTAIN CADE is a B1G Champ.

jj is the backup. Jj will get chances and hopefully not blow games like msu last year.

When you have 2 qbs you have none.

Hopefully the jj games will not ruin a chance at greatness for this team again like last year.

GO BLUE.

There is nothing anywhere which lends actual credence to the idea that it is impossible to have two starter-capable and quite good QBs on a roster, so really nothing you've said here make much sense. Further, this not what Harbaugh said - at all - and his statement is what we have, so your interpretation of it seems....fanciful, if I can use a more polite word. I honestly do not understand what is difficult about this for some.

To be fair, "2-QBs-means-you-have-none" is what doofus sportscasters say when they don't know what a coach will do but want to sound smart.

When you have 2 spoons for ice cream, you have no spoons and so get to eat no ice cream?

When you have 2 books, you have none . . .

When you have 2 eyes, . . .

Since reality is a big measuring stick, how about:

CAPTAIN CADE is a B1G Champ because of a guy named Hassan Haskins. As for blowing the MSU game, I seem to remember that when "Jj" fumbled, Michigan was leading 33-30.

CAPTAIN CADE then led Michigan on a 12-play drive where he got stuck at the 31-yard line with two incompletions after having a 3 and 3 at the 31-yard line.

CAPTAIN CADE followed that up with one more chance but threw an interception to close out the Michigan chances.

OP thinks he’s special and, like a snowflake, his comments deserves it’s own thread like he couldn’t have posted this garbage on any of the 3 threads on this yesterday.

OP, you’re an angry, clueless loser dogging JJ like he’s not a stud that would start for pretty much every B1G team. The only thing ruining anything is your presence on this board.

This OP clearly thinks that Captain America is the best Marvel character. And boy oh boy, he also speaks like my grandpa did, so he must be a depression era baby too.

If they were neck and neck in summer camp, then it is a great Idea to let them fight it out at the beginning of the season. I think Hawaii defense is a bit better than CSU's D. I think JJ adds that running dimension that we will need against the tougher defenses we will face later in the season. But if Cade is the more accurate passer then it will be difficult to keep him as backup. Unfortunately, one of these guys will go into the portal at the end of the season, since they both have 2 years of eligibility left.

And sometimes you actually have have two highly qualified QBs, the best of both worlds!

And when one of them is mature enough and one of the best leaders the leaders and best have ever seen; you can actually burden him with the insult of stealing his righteously earned job because he will do whatever is best for the team, including destroying broken fan base narratives that should have died 20 years ago.

My thoughts here.

First, I trust the coaching staff.  They have more visibility to the players, experience, and knowledge of football than the majority of commenters / commentators.

Second, I believe they still operate on a meritocracy - the best players play.

Third, there’s more to being an effective QB than natural ability / gifts - speed, elusiveness, etc.  One characteristic is - the ability to understand / read a defense - determine the appropriate adjustments - communicate them - and EXECUTE  the play.  Oh, there’s leadership too - in prep, during S&C, on the sideline, and in the huddle.

Fourth, Michigan seems fortunate to have two quality QB’s on the roster.

Fifth, though I enjoy a balanced game - run / pass, and believe Michigan has the elements of a solid, balanced, and explosive offense this season - the one stat that I will look for after each game is.. W or L.  It may not be glamorous - but, if this team has an 80 / 20 run pass ratio and wins every game handily - I would be ok with it.  Of course, what I think most of us want to see is - a team that can win the B1G East, then the CCG, and -  follow that up with two victories in the CFP.

When I think of evaluation and assessment - the word that comes to my mind is “enough”.  No, or very, very few players are “exceptional” in multiple metrics.  So, are Michigan’s QB’s elusiveness enough, do they recognize an opponent’s D and make effective enough adjustments, etc.  it seems - to no surprise - there are differences between Cade and JJ - the question is - how big is the difference  - and in what characteristics is the difference significant.

Several years ago, there was a QB at Michigan who (after he graduated) talked about how he learned to prepare while he was in Ann Arbor.  He wasn’t the most “fleet of foot” - nor did he have a “cannon” of an arm.  However, understanding the opposing D - adjusting to it.  And, delivering the ball accurately with timing, where the receiver could complete the reception - etc.  - was something he did.  He’s older now - and, if you can believe it - still throws a football around on weekends.  His name… Tom Brady.  Oh, by the way - he hasn’t gotten any faster over the years.

If I am “hyper critical” and have a “top evaluation score” of 10 - reflecting every element / aspect / characteristic of a college QB - perhaps Cade might have been an “8” last season, and - let’s say JJ was a “7” (with JJ’s weakest point being how accurately he recognized and adjusted to a defense).  I’m hoping that this season - both would be an 8.5 or 9 - each with certain characteristics stronger than the other.

I look forward to seeing both Cade and JJ throughout this season.  I wish them continued success on and off the field.  They are a sight for sore eyes - as is this entire squad.

Go Blue..

Blu you had me hanging on every word, especially the part where you described a past QB who didn't Wow with his physical gifts but understood the play & how to win - I was wracking my brain trying to figure out who you might be referring to!

And then Boom, you dropped ol Tom Brady on us! Dude, masterful! And you could even compare Brady/Henson to Cade/JJ, if you really want to stretch the comparison. They say many of the same things about these 2 QBs they said about those 2.

Yeah, just Boom! So spot on!
