His dad is the male equivalent of a pageant mom. Went on a long diatribe about Brian's high school coach over social media and made veiled threats. I can't find any article about it presumably since Brian's just a kid but it made its way thru the paywalled sites a number of months ago.

I'm not sure what kind of agreement Coach Clink has with Stoops, but it had better have something to do with beating an SEC team in the playoffs. If not, Michigan should get its DE's back.

Yeah which is interesting becasue the Smith twins gave a quote. Jerod Smith:

“I was told a few things, and I watched film on the school, and I feel like I wouldn’t be doing that there,” he said. “A few things they told me were going to happen with how many people they were going to take ended up being something totally different. Opportunity-wise, I didn’t feel like I was going to have the best opportunity there to make it to the next level as I would in a different conference.”

So basically he thinks Michigan was taking too many edge guys. And that Kentuckys scheme was a better fit for him. But now Kentucky has more edges so how does that make sense?

Maybe we can still flip Justin Scott, though he's more of a DT or even a nose than an Edge. Our DL development is great, and I trust the staff. Four disappointments in DL recruiting since July still stings.

We probably aren't flipping Scott, Rudolph or Patterson.

They all took the bag from known bagging schools willing to pay NIL up front to recruits, after initially favoring Michigan.  Unless U Miami and others start reneging on the recruit payments (which we have already seen), they will stay where they are getting paid.

I don't blame the kids at all for making that choice, nor am I really down on UM until we see how paying recruits works out over time - obviously didn't work out at A&M to date. UM focusing on paying NIL to current players and portal transfers seems a safer strategy.

I do believe UM should identify 10-15 recruits in each class that they are willing to pay NIL to - before even coming to campus - such that we can maybe close on a few 5 stars and high 4 stars to add in each class we are currently pulling in.

IE, do a hybrid model as to not be locked out from all the top 100 recruits.

I'm not sure what the point of the hybrid model is. If you are going to pay a few kids a cycle, what are you going to tell the other kids in the class, that they aren't worth it and we only want to pay certain kids? Especially when, all these kids think they're worth it. As fans, we can tell that there is a difference between Bryce Underwood and another top 300 kid, but the recruit and their family probably aren't going to see it that way. If you're going to pay a few kids, kinda have to pay them all no?

I guess it depends on what the reason Michigan has for not paying kids upfront, but the going assumption has been that you want kids you want to be here and are kids that fit the program and want to avoid locker room issues. To me, an easy way to undermine that is by doing this hybrid model you suggest. You hand a top 50 kid six figures to come to campus, and now he's an early enrollee working out with Semaj Morgan who got nothing to come here?

The reason Michigan isn't paying players up front is because Michigan's state law rgulating NIL does not allow it:

Sec. 3.

A postsecondary educational institution, athletic association, conference, or other group or organization with authority over intercollegiate athletics shall not do either of the following:

  • Provide a prospective college athlete who will attend a postsecondary educational institution with compensation in relation to the athlete’s name, image, or likeness rights.
  • Prevent a student who resides in this state and participates in intercollegiate athletics from obtaining professional representation in relation to contracts or legal matters regarding opportunities to be compensated for use of the student’s name, image, or likeness rights, including, but not limited to, representation provided by an athlete agent or legal representation provided by an attorney.

(My bold).  Now, one could argue that this doesn't prohibit promises and probably be correct, but the school doesn't want to do that because it lacks the ability to enforce such promises.

Michigan already kind of has something like this in place, except recruits get paid once they hit campus instead of in some sort of up front arrangement.  Will Johnson's NIL was fully activated the day he hit campus, JJ was fully activated during his freshman year if not earlier. I'm sure their parents have shared this info with the Underwoods and the Davis family before him.  Sometimes you got to trust. Unfortunately most SEC and big ACC programs are run by sleazy dudes, so they pay up front.

The sentiment from Holland is that Michigan is not giving up on recruiting Rudolph and Patterson.  He did not say anything in the realm of there being hard rumblings that Rudolph would flip back to Michigan, or Patterson flipping to Michigan, but that Michigan is recruiting both of them very hard.

As far as Scott goes, he was a heavy lean for Michigan until he committed to OSU out of nowhere.  I wouldn't be shocked if Michigan is still pursuing him like they were before, and if Michigan wins the B1G again and showcases the NIL the starters on the team are making, then it may persuade Scott to flip to Michigan. I don't think he would have 0% interest in Michigan just because he is committed to OSU after liking Michigan for so long before his commitment.

Holland clarified in his podcast this week. Michigan is basically casually keeping in touch with him for now, with the intent to turn up the heat closer to signing day, especially with the goal of bringing Patterson in for an OV for the OSU game.

Patterson's comments were more to compare the attention he's getting today vs before his commitment to Miami.

Maybe I'm wrong or crazy or both, but is it possible that Michigan is more interested in the portal than we believe? I'm not saying high school recruiting isn't going on or important, but something is definitely different this year 🤷

That recruit had every opportunity to commit he was not coming here regardless.  It’s been weird how a lot of these guys we missed on this cycle ended up at Kentucky Teyhron  Nichols the twins and now Robinson.

That may be true but something happens with our approach and momentum right around when the Chiles commited to Florida and it hasn’t corrected since. If I had to guess I think there were some recruits getting/looking for advance payments to visit like the scenario Gene Smith had put out in media.  M says no and now the words getting out we aren’t paying like other programs.  Now we see 500-800 ranked recruiting targets popping up.  Could be gems but makes the sustainability harder in that model. Either that or the money is already spent for this cycle seems plausible.
