Big10K - Virtual Race this Year
Attention all mgorunners (and walkers) - the Big10K is virtual this year, which is good for all of us who do not live in Chicago, nor have any reason to be there at the end of July. There's a bit of a friendly competition going on for which school has the most representation - right now, we're second to sparty of all schools - so sign up for your race (https://btnbig10k.com/) and go for a run or walk!
It’s actually really cheap for a virtual race, $25, and you get some decent swag.
Thanks. Just signed up for the 10k. I wouldn't be surprised if they have more run this year than ever before due to the virtual location aspect.
I've never done a virtual race before. How does it work? Is there an app that tracks your progress during the race, or is it self reporting?
Self reporting. Typically they send a link asking you to enter your time and then it puts it on the leaderboard. It’s far from perfect, but still kinda fun to see how you compare
yes, this is true.
I've done 5 this year - Spartan (not those spartans) Race Trifecta and Ultra as well as May the 4th virtual 10K - all you do is self report your time and collect the swag delivered to your front porch. Its not quite the same as an actual race, but its certainly better than nothing and a half decent reason to keep training.
Have you seen the new races that some taxes are trying? You have a scheduled time to start and then when you finish it’s like a moving celebration straight to your car. Again, far from perfect, but better than chasing cracks in the sidewalk by yourself.
I have not seen this format - do you have a link to one? Sounds like it could be fun.
I was signed up for a bunch of races pre-Covid and did a couple virtual. One of them was 15k where you were submitted your time online.
I placed well, but ultimately lost to the winner with a submitted time of 00:01:42...that's about an 11 second/mile pace. I'm trying to find them to see if they have any eligibility left.
a better question would be where did they find the rocket fuel?
NES Powerpad.
No. You can just time yourself. I use the app called MapMyRun. There are no prizes for where you finish, so the time is only as important as it is for you.
Here's a story about the Big10K. In 2015, I ran in the race. Went out REALLY FAST like top 5% of the field fast. At about the 4 mile mark, started to feel some serious discomfort in my lower abdomen and high tailed to the first porta-potty that I could find. I'm not sure how long I was in there, but by the time I got out I could barely move my legs. I think I ended up finishing in like 48 minutes or something, but my 5K splits had to be the worst in the whole field.
Moral of the story - be careful what you eat, and don't go out too fast.
48 minutes is a really nice10K time, despite the "unpleasantness" of the potty visit.... count yourself lucky, at least there was a place to go!
I was in really good shape at the time and running fairly competitively. I think I was shooting for a sub-40 and came out in like sub 19 on the first 5k. So my splits were like 19:00 - 29:00. The worst was coming down the last mile and having other runners try and cheer me on to the finish. "Come on Michigan, you got it!"
It takes me 48 minutes to do a 5K nowadays!
I'm having a hard time relating to this as my best 10k time is 1:14.
Mgorunner here... Signed up yesterday for the 5k. Going for sub 20 in my Nike vaporfly carbon plate shoes. I love my zoom fly flyknits! It will be tough for me running alone but I am hoping to represent! Let get the lead in registrations!
That's really fast! Sub 20 5K is a pipe dream for me. My PR is 22:30. Now that I train for more endurance type races, my sprinting speed has taken a hit. Maybe someday, I'll revisit the 5K and give it a go!
I did it back in 2015 and enjoyed booing Jim Delaney when he gave the welcome speech to all the runners.
