Best way to stream UM FB and BB?

Submitted by sheckylovejoy on August 30th, 2022 at 5:25 PM

We’re recent cord cutters. What do y’all think is the best way to stream Michigan FB and BB in 2022? Not just concerned with price, but also picture quality and DVR.

Thanks!

Note there is a 90 day travel restriction if you aren't in the same home area for an extended period.  However, it can be reset by

(a) logging in (or having someone else do it) in the household
(b) using a different google account after 90 days.

The "owner" has to go to their google account and go to "family share" and send an invite.

I've had both Sling and YouTube TV.  Both have excellent picture quality and sound (I use apps on Apple TV).  Right now I'm on YTV, but I think you can piece together what you need for Michigan games on Sling for a little cheaper (maybe $10 less).

If you aren't concerned with watching games live, nfl-video.com is a great bootleg streaming site.  Games are recorded and available a few hours after they are over.

I think this assumes you also have an antenna for FOX, ABC, etc.  I'm not able to do that at my location.   I used to use Sling with Locast for over air networks until they shut down.  I then switched to YTTV which has everything.

Also, with Sling some channels are on Orange and some are on Blue plan.  You can switch back and forth as much as you want game to game (at least you used to be able to) or you can buy the combined package.

Yeah in my area (DC), local channels on Sling include Fox and ABC. So if I get orange + blue + sports package, all Michigan football content is covered at a cost of $65. And YTTV is $65 outside of promotions. So, seems like the streamers have pretty much converged on pricing.

However, you get more channels for your money with YTTV (85) than Sling (70).  And the real difference-maker is YTTV has *all* local channels including CBS, which you'll need for basketball.

WINNER: YTTV

Someone posted a very extensive review of different options on reddit about a week ago. Here's the link to the review:

And here's the link to the reddit post in case there is anything interesting in the comments:

Edit: Is there any way we can maybe get a sticky for cord cutting? This topic seems to come up about once a week during football season (no offense intended, OP).

That's what it looks like. I've never heard of Vidgo, but not getting CBS and NBC would be a dealbreaker for me.

One thing to keep in mind since you also mentioned BBall is that March Madness early round games are televised on CBS and Turner channels (TNT, TBS, TruTV) which don't seem to be available on Vidgo.

I had the worst issues trying to access my own Hulu account when traveling. Eventually locked me out from using its at home. I get that it's done to keep people at different addresses from using the same login, but I'll be damned if I'm going to pay for a service that locks me out.  It's not been a problem with yttv or fubotv in the past.  I will say though that fubotv kept trying to bill me after I requested termination of my account. I had to change my debit card number to keep them from stealing from me.

YTTV is terrific but stay away from checking Twitter live during gameplay. It’s usually on a 15-20 second delay and tweets will potentially give you a spoiler of the next play. You can instead use one of the countless commercial breaks to check Twitter

Lol. Maybe it’s just me, but this “cord cutting” seems like BS. How is it cord cutting when you are just cobbling together all of the services you get from one provider by using multiple providers?
Just seems like a lot of hoops to jump through to save a few dollars!
Every time I see “cord cutter” it reads as “cheap Charlie” in my mind!

For me personally - cable charges are different everywhere - my cost for cable was $110. I pay $65 for YTTV and it includes all the channels I need. In addition, I cancel YTTV in the summer - something I can't do with cable - and save quite a bit. Then I can take my savings and buy more content that I want - like Netflix / Peacock / Disney / Boomerang etcstill still save money over cable. And I can cancel any service at any time when I'm not using it. I spend 95% of my TV time on apps other than YTTV. YTTV for me is just for sports and a few other things.

Outside of football NOTHING interests me on Live TV. So I pay for 3-4 months YTTV and the rest of the year I'm pocketing that $65, or spending $5-$10 a month on Paramount or something.

If you feel the need to light that $400+ on fire, you do you.

And I can't imagine you have to cobble together anything with YTTV or Hulu or Vidgo or Fubu. Those 4 have it all.

We were paying $1700 a year for TV subs (DirecTV+premiums+Netflix). Now we pay about $750 a year and still watch everything we want whenever we want. A big part of that is not paying for all the sports packages between the Final Four and opening day at Michigan Stadium. Over the summer, we were paying $30 a month for everything we wanted. It requires about an hour a year of labor.

Enjoy Game 1, however you watch it.

You're not wrong.  I'm kind of a cord cutter but I just stopped watching TV and got season tickets instead so i dont do these streaming things either.  Besides michigan sports, there's really nothing i want to watch on tv ever.  Ill watch some youtube on my phone if there's a specific topic that interests me but i just dont own a tv and i dont miss it.

I have an OTA antenna + Tablo for local channels and Sling Blue + Orange ($50/mo). I'm adding the sports pack to get BTN (+$15/mo) from September to April.

I got the Tablo before I got Sling. If you go with Sling, you should probably go with airtv for the integration, but I have no experience with their devices.

Versus YTTV, I like the ability to turn off BTN when I don't want it. YTTV has the local channels built in though. No need for an antenna and separate device. YTTV also has unlimited DVR storage.
