Best Video You'll See Today: Ford and Reagan Cheering Along to the Victors
This was just posted on one of the Facebook groups I monitor. Back in 1981, when the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum opened in Grand Rapids, they held a huge Bob Hope TV special to kick it off. The Michigan Marching Band opened the show - and it's phenomenal. Everything about this clip is golden, but the best part comes at about the 2:00 mark when we see Jerry Ford singing "The Victors" and Ronald Reagan clapping along.

How do you know this is the best video I'll see all day?
October 6th, 2015 at 11:45 AM ^
if you find a better one.

Found one....

Whatever happened to Lloyd Brady?

Ford would have The Victors played in place of Hail to the Chief at official State functions. Best POTUS of all time.

And had the MMB written into his official state funeral planning document. I was part of the band that played on the tarmac in Grand Rapids after the Rose Bowl in '07, and it remains one of the coolest, strangest, most awesome things I did with the band.

For those who think that their best source of news is the one that reinforces their own points of view. The "Clinton News Network" is in the same genre.

Unless you get sidetracked watching porn.

If this was after 1982, Reagan got the words wrong. Love me some Ford though!
October 6th, 2015 at 11:56 AM ^
It was on September 18, 1981, according to Wikipedia. What changed in 1982?
October 6th, 2015 at 12:16 PM ^
It was a kinda-sorta partisan political joke. If you remember Iran-Contra, Reagan developed an incredibly selective memory during the mid-80s. Some believe it was the early stages of Alzheimers or simple senility, while others think it was "intentional"...
October 6th, 2015 at 12:29 PM ^
meant to laugh at an Alzheimers joke?
I just can't.

This is the unfortunate thing about a political system that combines the head of state and head of government into one office.
Forget the political aspect and focus on that two of our country's heads of state were singing "The Victors."

I hope this thread doesn't turn into a political debate.

Why was the MMB's maize so bright yellow in 1981?
I thought that was just an Addidas thing.

Great video!
That was to celebrate the opening of the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum, not the library. The museum is in Grand Rapids, while the library is in Ann Arbor, on North Campus. (Ford is apparently the only president whose library and museum are separated, although run by the same director.)
October 6th, 2015 at 12:10 PM ^
Edited to reflect that it was the Museum.

Might be one of the coolest things I've ever seen. Politics aside, having not one but TWO Presidents of the United States cheering to The Victors is flat awesome.

C'mon, there has to be somebody on MGoBlog that was in that show. Or at least in the audiance.
Tell us about it . . .

next door to the performance hall, if that counts. I was only 12, but it was definitely a vivid memory. Can't tell you much more about the marching band because my view of it was basically what you see on the video lol, but it was definitely a cool moment.
The only other stuff I remember from the show was Hope's monologue making fun of Ford's golf game. He joked that the freeway in town named after him goes straight for little ways and then veers off into the woods.
October 6th, 2015 at 6:25 PM ^
Awesome. And that totally sounds like a Bob Hope joke.

I wonder how the MMB members decided who would get to be on TV. (That's just a small portion of the band.) Did they go with section leaders and drill instructors? Or did they arm wrestle for the TV spots?
Cool video.
