Beilein's seat

Beilein's seat is declared hot here:

Fair or not? Discuss.

If I recall correctly he was hired just after the '07 season. Benzing aside, this recruiting class looks really weak in retrospect, at least by Big Ten standards:

Of course, I realize that Cronin is unavailable. I'm not sure he was destined to be future All-American, though. As well, I think Benzing was an administrative long shot.

I also don't know much about recruiting cycles for basketball. Because of timing issues, it might not be fair to judge that class too harshly.

He has done better since then, and I'd be inclined to give him more time (two seasons at least). He's more of a system coach than most and he might need a full roster of "his guys."

I don't see Michigan being Iowa bad or anything that low. With all the young guys involved I think this kind of team is exactly what the Coach wants and I think he does his best when he is teaching the kids.

I'm excited for the season and I think Michigan is going to be a tough team to play against.

I think they will be taller and more physical this year even with a younger team.

I hate losing as much as the next guy but he needs to get 2-3 more years ... he got us to the tourny and won a game ... also while he still failing to recruit in the D (not easy considering Izzo is a God) he has shown in the latest classes that he can get it done ... if we give him time (and we will) i think we will become a top 25 program on a yearly basis

I find it quite interesting that several former NBA players, who could send their kids just about anywhere, have entrusted their sons to this program.

Could they possibly know a bit more about basketball than those who write about it? And what it takes for young kids to grow and develop? I'll be happy to see if they're right.

that so many people here not only accept mediocrity but also regression. Everytime it seems the BBall team gets "close" they have an abomination of a season like last year. I think Beilein needs to hurry up and win or hurry up and leave.

I like him a lot as a coach and he seems to be a good guy, this just isnt the right fit for him, he is playing small school ball in a big school conference and it hasn't worked so far so I don't see any reason that it will magically change.

Don't get me wrong, I hope and wish that he gets this team on track so that they can be competitive in conference play and become a factor, I just haven't seen it yet.

Acknowledging the troubles and limited recent success the team has had, I wonder whether most Michigan supporters feel that in 10 years the Wolverines will be regular contenders for Big Ten championships and Sweet Sixteen (and further) games.

For me, my first exposure to Michigan hoops was the epic battles with Indiana and Bobby Knight, watching Phil Hubbard and enjoying near-constant Big Ten contention. Sure, Indiana was dominant, but most years Michigan was in the next group at the top of the conference.

I know it's impossible to predict with certainty that Michigan will return to the top, but it seems like people are a lot more certain that the football team will reclaim its historic power than the hoops team.

I sure hope that, 10 years from now, we're celebrating our team's success and thinking of the current and recent troubles as just an unfortunate blip. I sure don't want to see that Izzo, Matta, Bo Ryan and Painter will still be dominating the league, but am not sure what ouside of NBA jobs or scandal (or age for Izzo and Ryan) will displace those guys from their current dominance. Beilein seems like a good man, a decent recruiter, and worked miracles at WVU, but topping the best of the Big Ten is a tall order.

We wouldn't have gone through Ellerbee and 6 years of Amaker. I think as long as the program doesn't embarrass us, most people in and outside the Athletic Department are satisfied. That's why any talk of any heat on Beilein's chair is silly; you shouldn't talk about heat for a guy who has 0 chance of being fired this year (barring scandal or complete implosion, which could be said about any coach).

Football loses a game, and people go crazy, and if it happens enough, powers that be feel the heat too. Basketball loses 20 games, and it merits an "eh". So, no, there no heat. Not unless Izzo starts going consistently old school and decides to beat us by 50 regularly. (But why would he? He hasn't been threatened by anything we've done since Fisher was canned).

Like others have said, to suggest that Beilein is on the hot seat is foolish.

The game has changed over the past decade-plus. Without the practice facility (which is on the way), it would be damn hard for John Wooden, in his prime, to come in here and compete for Big Ten titles. It's about the facilities, man. Kids don't want to come in and play in less-than facilities when they've got options. Recruiting is going to suffer, and eventually you will see that present itself on the court.

Now, once we've got above-mentioned facilities (practice facility and renovated Crisler), if he's still lingering around 8th place in the Big Ten, we've got a problem.

I've read Gary Parrish's work in the past. I'm not impressed. He's like the monkey in the zoo throwing shit at the wall to see what sticks, so that he can get clicks on his articles.
