Thanks for posting this, Matt.  Always look forward to your board posts and updates when it comes to basketball recruiting.

Could you give a likelihood of ending up in maize and blue for each of the recruits you listed?  I'm sure you have a much better feel for this than the 247 "cold, warm, hot" indicator.

There's no single prospect I'd say Michigan has a strong chance of signing at this point. That is almost exclusively a product of just how few prospects we offer and the fact that we're not as invested into recruiting during the season. Things will clear up in May/June (after the live evaluation periods and August (again, after the live evaluation period).

Once kids are able to sort through their 'best offers', that's when visits start to occur and top 3, 5, 7s start to trickle out.

Matt, since we're well away from 2020 signing day who might Michigan snag? I personally really appreciate your site and you evaluations thank you so much for your help.

The Carlos Johnson offer just doesn’t make sense to me. To me (you can disagree) he’s Charles Matthews but smaller and not as explosive. Carlos might be a better passer. Matthews has limitations but he is so athletic and long he can make up for them, it’s seems like Johnson can’t, or won’t ever be able to. If we strike out with higher guys, I’d be okay with taking him, but an offer so early to him just doesn’t make sense to me. I’d happy for him to prove me wrong though.

From what I've seen and heard, I think Scooby compares more to a smaller version of Kenneth Faried. Sam Webb has said he's improved his outside shot though this season. But I agree, the offer is curious. He seems like he would be a better fit at MSU rather than UM given his play style

I'd be fine with Scooby. As long as he's a "filler" in the class rather than taking a spot from someone else. If we got, say Jackson, Loveday, Cunningham, Peavy or Morton or other guard, and THEN Scooby - that's an awesome class with depth, skill and a role player. It's like Spike in the 2012 class - valuable player to have on your team, but not someone to build a class on or around.

I'll chime in with my thoughts. In a vacuum, Johnson is a reach in my opinion, as he has the game of a Power Forward with the body of a 2/3 and does not possess the athleticism to compensate. That said, if he's your final piece of talented group.........he basically serves as insurance for early attrition. From that standpoint he's not a bad guy to have. Not to mention he's an outstanding kid with high character that is in good academic standing.

To put this in perspective, I thought both Austin Davis and Eli Brooks were incredible reaches at the time they were offered. In my professional opinion, neither of them were Big Ten level prospects, or even high-major prospects for the matter. I don't think Johnson falls in the category of 'incredible reach' for me. I think Johnson is what I'd label a 'mid-major plus'........meaning he could be decent with the right fit at the right school, at the high-major level, but there are definitely some concerns about his game translating.

Thanks for posting. So I (and anybody else wondering) is clear-when you say should be "higher", you mean a better ranking and therefore lower number yes? and vice versa of course

Or is it should be ranked higher as in a higher number (and therefore is "overrated")?

Really?  When he visited, Sam did a piece on him that was somewhat optimistic.  Kessler said he likes how Michigan uses and developes their bigs.  I know his recruitment got tougher because Duke has now offered, and his dad having played for UGA.  Are you hearing anything or does the staff think their chances are better elsewhere?

After yesterday's post on Dalen Terry, I really want that kid. He seems like he could be like a rich man's MAAR. Getting him and Zeb in the backcourt would be a nice haul

Will be interesting how many slots will be open by 2020 signing day. Zavier and Teske are the only seniors leaving. Will Iggy or Poole still be around...will Davis not be here for a 5th year...will anyone like Brooks transfer. The challenging roster management duties of a college head coach. Stay tuned for details...

This is just guessing, but I would imagine no 5th year for Davis, and Iggy & Poole both gone.

Hard to say on transfers.  I would hope Brooks would stay for depth purposes, but I doubt he's ever a starter or even a real high level backup.  Nunez would maybe be the other top candidate for a transfer, but it is far to early to speculate on that.

So I could see the 2020 class having around 5 slots.
