The Athletic-- free 2017-18 MBB lookback stories
The Athletic normally has most of their content behind a paywall, but in honor of the Final Four is providing free access to seven Brendan Quinn stories written throughout the year. A bit of a time capsule, and some great content and writing from my second-favorite site. https://theathletic.com/289865/2018/03/27/the-brendan-quinn-index-seven…

the 1-6 play was in 2011 , but I think what also gets forgotten sometimes is the 2012 team was also a 4 seed like the 2013 team, and they got knocked out in the first round by 13 seed Ohio. Not a fun way for Stu and Novak to end their careers but at least they got to hang a Big Ten Title regular season banner for the first time since 1986.
Can't wait for the site update that hopefully introduces an easily searchable forum.
I have been kicking around subscribing for the past few weeks but haven't pulled the trigger because it's been hard to find feedback on the writing quality/value proposition. I would be happy to pay for content that is worth the cost.
They are good reads, promise.

Thank you. I appreciate the tip about the free articles for two reasons.
First, The Athletic clearly has better resources, so their writers are able to go into depth in a way that regular beat writers don't have the time or money to do. The site has the money to send Quinn to Milwaukee for a story on Poole. Quinn captured many details that I'd never read in years of following the team and Coach Beilein.
Thanks too for directing us to the site, so I could discover that Quinn has improved. He used to employ big words or try to get poetic, in a way that made lots of people consider him smart. But it wasn't smart. His big words were often misused and his attempts at poetry were less about making the subject of an article clearer than about him showing off. Now that excess has been trimmed in the articles I read. Now he's writing well, not just fancy.
Reading a site without ads and pop ups everywhere with clear concise text and quality writing was so refreshing.
I consider investing in projects like this an investment toward a better world. Thank you
