Article on 5 star QB JJ McCarthy

Submitted by StephenRKass on May 9th, 2019 at 9:35 AM

There is a long article in today's Chicago Tribune focusing on JJ McCarthy, the 5 start QB recruiting target from Illinois.

LINK:  Narareth QB J.J. McCarthy got his first Power 5 offer in the 8th grade. Now Michigan, Northwestern, Notre Dame and Texas are among the teams courting him.

Note:  I have a subscription to the Trib, so this may be paywalled. Still, here are a few quotes.

Where he might go:  "Michigan is perceived to be in the lead for McCarthy, who will visit Ann Arbor this weekend."

Toughness:  "Days before the Class 7A state title game in November, McCarthy declared he would rather have his fractured thumb cut off than miss the game. Then he led the Roadrunners to a 31-10 victory over St. Charles North."

Harbaugh:  "“You never know what you will get out of him,” he says. “He doesn’t let the quarterbacks eat chicken because they are weak birds. I thought that was funny because I’m not a big fan of chicken. I like steak.”

And more on Harbaugh:  "Harbaugh’s visit to Nazareth got canceled by the polar vortex. But McCarthy visited Ann Arbor last month for the Wolverines’ open spring practice and says he was impressed by how Harbaugh, a former NFL quarterback, interacted with his passers.

Michigan:  “And they’re in South Africa right now,” McCarthy says of the team trip. “That is so cool.”

His coach:  "For what it’s worth, Racki, 51, [edit:  Nazareth head coach] is a Wolverines fan. His father’s side of the family is from Michigan, and he dreamed of playing there before suiting up for Southern Illinois."

Ranking:  "McCarthy is the nation’s No. 19 player in the 247Sports.com composite, which aggregates ratings from 247, Rivals.com and ESPN. Steve Wiltfong, 247’s lead analyst who is 8-for-8 in his Class of 2021 predictions, believes he will choose Michigan.

Football skills:  McCarthy is an ideal spread quarterback.  “He could run any offense,” Racki says. “He could run the wishbone, honestly. He is that good of an athlete, that good speed-wise. He’s fast, athletic enough and tough enough because he’s a hockey player. Has a rocket arm and he can move.”

Goals:  McCarthy is flattered by all the attention but says college football is a steppingstone to his long-term goal: “NFL MVP.”

Advice from Julian Love, ND player drafted in 4th round by Giants:  "With college I’d advise him to go with whatever is comfortable, no matter where it is. At the end of the day, (the rankings) don’t matter at all.”

We'll see what happens on the visit this weekend. Harbaugh is really packing it in, going from South Africa back to Ann Arbor and immediately hosting McCarthy.

We can haz 5 star QBs again?

It was going to be Ohio State and Notre Dame until they took their QBs. According to the one tidbit, ND kind of bungled this recruitment, and OSU was just willing to take whoever was ready first between McCord and McCarthy.

It's rare that there's A) a 5 star QB from the Midwest, who also B) seems to want to stay in the Midwest. Given those two things, and the fact that he really prioritizes academics, I think Stanford is the only out of region school that could catch his eye. He doesn't seem one for a Bama or a Clemson.

The article also said:  He holds 33 offers and might end the suspense as early as this weekend.

I really like McCarthy as well. He is competitive in everything. After the interview with the Trib, he jumped in to Lacrosse practice. And his first love was hockey, which he played for years. (Big Blackhawks fan.) The problem with hockey was he felt he would have to move to Quebec to train with the top juniors, and he didn't want to leave home. Still, hockey, lacrosse, football:  multiple sports, which hits one of Harbaugh's likes in players.

There was a piece this week by Angelique Chengelis on Michigan recruiting. She opined that because Michigan now has depth, they are going for the best players out there, and no longer accepting commitments from lesser players earlier in the recruiting cycle. McCarthy committing could really be the first domino to fall, which could bode well for the rest of the 2021 class. Other kids notice when your class is headlined by the top QB coming out that year. (IIRC, we have a Michigan OL kid, and this would be number 2 for 2021. Two critical areas to recruit well.)

To be clear, I don't know anything. I'm just putting everything together: the comments, the crystal balls, the crazy fast turn around trip, OSU and ND having their QBs, and the fact that he is bringing AJ Henning back with him. This just feels like a "pull the trigger and put the recruiting hat on" weekend.

Correct. We don't even want him to decide soon, because if he decided now, he'd pick Notre Dame. We're running a clear cut second to them, but a lot of that has to do with the old regime. He's got a good relationship with Gattis, and if #SpeedInSpace is as good as we hope, I think it's a coin toss between us and them, with a small chance of him staying home and going to Illinois. His grandpa played basketball for them, I think they have a small chance.

Webb talked at length this morning about McCarthy, and listening between the lines my reaction was that Sam isn't all that far away from a gut feel. I could be dead wrong of course, but I've been listening to him for long enough to have a decent sense of what he's thinking by how he phrases things.

Not sure if I brought this up to you in a different thread, or if someone else made a similar observation, but just remember most of this film he's 15/16. And I don't mean this confrontationally, He just recently got a drivers license. His hands aren't even close to full size yet, and his conference games and playoff games are being played on Friday Nights in October and Saturday's during the day in November. Not ideal conditions, so the spin and touch isn't as important right now. He has a very effortless throwing motion, he trusts his arm to make the throws he can make, and he only threw 4 interceptions in 14 games against a pretty elite schedule.

Kid sounds awesome!  He'd be a big piece of the class - early enough to help recruit the guys he'll want around him.  And it seems like he'd do that with some gusto!

And special note to the OP:  Thank you for posting highlights from the story. It captures the content without stealing the content.  I wish more posters would do this, rather than putting zero effort into a bad link and a title...  I'll +1 you if I see a post from you somewhere...

He sounds like a kindred spirit with harbaugh.  He hates nervous birds and he loves trips abroad.   Let’s win this recruiting battle; silver or bronze will not cut it with this one.

Nah. Just yesterday you were telling us how stable and boring Midwestern guys are. There won't be any drama with this guy.

Aside: When should he leave the friendly confines of the Midwest? 21? 22? Before he considers getting married, right?

Sorry about that. I subscribe to the Trib (local paper,) so it is probably paywalled. That's why I included a fair number of quotes in my post. The article is longer, but you can't quote everything, and part of it has to do with other schools and with 5 star recruits coming out of Illinois in the past, so I figured they weren't as relevant to the discussion for Michigan fans. (nvm. . . thought you were referring to my original post.)

My biggest takeaway from that article:

Holy fuck, Chris Weinke looks old. He's 46 years old, and looks at least late 50s. This is the guy who won the Heisman in 2000, so he shouldn't look like that.
