Overall seems about the right spot. Feeling that Wisconsin and Sparty just became must-wins if we want to crack the top-ten
September 30th, 2018 at 3:59 PM ^
I think we should have passed Stanford, but who cares. Just keep winning, that's all you can do. The polls will take care of themselves.
September 30th, 2018 at 4:14 PM ^
I agree Stanford was manhandled by the same team we lost to and should have lost to Oregon, if the Ducks would have taken a knee and ran out the clock. But whatever
September 30th, 2018 at 6:31 PM ^
Agree, but AP voting and to a lesser--but still significant--extent Coaches polling is a complete joke in general.
In aggregate, it isn't terrible, but accuracy is extremely lame. Save for a few exception (usually Alabama) every single "ranking" could easily slide 4 or 5 spaces from where they are.
September 30th, 2018 at 6:50 PM ^
Wait, you think the coaches' poll is less of a joke than the AP poll? The coaches don't even fill them out by themselves.
September 30th, 2018 at 9:07 PM ^
I’d trust an assistant that has time to watch other games more than a head coach that doesn’t...
October 1st, 2018 at 3:29 PM ^
I feel Dabo Swinney has voted Clemson #1 for the past 384 weeks.
September 30th, 2018 at 7:15 PM ^
Well, that is true, none of the rankings even matter until they do in late October, and even then the placeholders outside the Top Four are window-dressing anyway. In think from a pride perspective for our team, the S&P ratings are more meaningful than the weekly writer popularity contest.
September 30th, 2018 at 4:01 PM ^
Already having nightmares of both OSU and ND in the playoffs...
Here's hoping that it's ultimately neither.
September 30th, 2018 at 4:02 PM ^
If they are 2 and 3 then one of them would advance. Could happen
September 30th, 2018 at 4:09 PM ^
Notre Dame looks like a foregone conclusion almost. The stiffest tests remaining for them are at Virginia Tech this weekend and at USC to end the year - they should win both.
At least we can still prevent one of those teams from making the playoff. Then, I hope we get a rematch with the Domers.
September 30th, 2018 at 4:55 PM ^
When M lost to ND they I already mentioned this.
I hate to say it but they are the better version of M a little bit. I hate it. Someone more advance football knowledge can comment but their offense seems like ours with better execution ?? Also I hate that their contributors are from 2015 class. At least I have hope M is going to be Fielding tough teams from here on out like ND does. Go blue.
September 30th, 2018 at 5:03 PM ^
I dunno. Notre Dame hasn't seemed like so much of a world-beater that a win over a pumped up VT or a middling USC should be some foregone conclusion.
September 30th, 2018 at 7:44 PM ^
USC absolutely reeks, but @VT could be a problem. Regardless, I see them winning out. They've become deadly with that QB change.
September 30th, 2018 at 5:31 PM ^
Pretty hard to see an unbeaten Notre Dame missing the playoff, weak schedule or not. Still, and I know Michigan fans don't want to hear it, but the Irish winning is good for us. It ultimately makes a one-possession loss to them on the road look a lot better.
September 30th, 2018 at 5:50 PM ^
You're too funny! A "rematch with the Domers", exactly how do you see that happening?.
September 30th, 2018 at 7:21 PM ^
If we made the playoffs and were seeded opposite them. Is that not obvious?
September 30th, 2018 at 4:33 PM ^
ND plays precisely one ranked team the rest of their season in Viginia Tech and even they looked awfully shaky yesterday. Unfortunately it should be a cake walk for them the rest of the way.
September 30th, 2018 at 6:19 PM ^
And yet Syracuse beat Clemson last year and nearly beat them this year. Will we never learn that rankings mean little (except for Alabama, natch) in predicting outcomes?
September 30th, 2018 at 6:52 PM ^
True...and their win against us could also end up looking a lot less impressive if we end up with 4 losses.
September 30th, 2018 at 5:13 PM ^
Just take solace in the fact that you'd get to enjoy one or both getting absolutely earholed by Bama
September 30th, 2018 at 6:18 PM ^
One of them being in is bad enough. But both? Just kill me now, it would be less painful.
It puts me in the position of actually having to root for Alabama. And I grew tired of Alabama long ago. They're going all the way this year...again...yawn.
September 30th, 2018 at 4:02 PM ^
Stanford should be lower than us.
September 30th, 2018 at 5:57 PM ^
Why? Because UM lost by 7 and Stanford lost by 21. You do realize that Michigan is not the only team to improve from week one. Me thinks the Irish has to. I would think a rematch with the Irtish at this point would not be what all the homers think it would be. Just saying.
September 30th, 2018 at 7:00 PM ^
What you just said does not mean what you apparently think it does.
September 30th, 2018 at 8:00 PM ^
Um...yes.
September 30th, 2018 at 4:34 PM ^
Overall, I like the spot. Lower the better for me this early though.
September 30th, 2018 at 4:35 PM ^
September 30th, 2018 at 4:40 PM ^
Any football poll listing Kentucky #13 is, by its very nature, completely invalid.
September 30th, 2018 at 5:01 PM ^
Have you watched them this year? At all? They're legitimately good. They have a dynamic QB and RB, their OL moves people, and their defense is stout. They will win 10 games this year. If you win 10 games in the SEC you're a top 15 team for sure.
September 30th, 2018 at 8:00 PM ^
Mostly I just can't wrap my head around Kentucky being good at football any more than Kansas or Rutgurz being good at football.
But I promise I will take a look at what I'm missing.
September 30th, 2018 at 9:31 PM ^
Everybody complains bitterly that the same squads are always highly ranked and then everybody complains bitterly when some upstart squad starts to gain a little respect.
September 30th, 2018 at 4:46 PM ^
Kentucky? Really? Plus Stanford lost to the same team we did, but worse, and they just lost. How do they stay above?
September 30th, 2018 at 4:54 PM ^
Because of the Nothwestern game - if it wasn’t obvious that wasn’t an impressive victory.
September 30th, 2018 at 5:50 PM ^
Yes but that State demolition of CMU was handsome enough to move them up?
September 30th, 2018 at 5:03 PM ^
Both teams have two wins against ranked opponents at the time they played, not sure what's confusing?
September 30th, 2018 at 5:34 PM ^
Kentucky is 5-0. It’s fair that they are now ahead of us. This is the point in the year when the remaining unbeaten teams start jumping the one-loss teams.
Stanford is a closer call but they did beat Oregon last week.
September 30th, 2018 at 9:59 PM ^
Agreed. I look at it as we didn't change positions with any one-loss teams that won.
On the other hand, for Stanford to be inserted ahead of us when they got smoked 38-17 to join the one-loss club doesn't seem right.
September 30th, 2018 at 6:07 PM ^
The Michigan arrogance. Love it!
"How do they stay above"? Because with just a simple eye test Stanford is better than Michigan. There is no shame in admitting it, just lose those homer glasses. Did you ever think that maybe ND has improved since week one, or is that just something only Michigan does? Everyone here is a fan of UM football, but most of the time our fandom clouds our judgement of reality. Take it for what it is and move on. It is just a poll, very seldom right, but it's hard to argue on this one.
September 30th, 2018 at 7:33 PM ^
This is such a bizarre, tortured argument. ND has improved by 2 touchdowns more than Michigan did over the same time period? Based on what? Did Stanford also not improve along the way? Just gibberish.
The reason Stanford is above Michigan is not because of the direct ND comparison. It’s because Stanford’s best win (Oregon) is far better than Michigan’s best win. Simple.
October 1st, 2018 at 3:36 AM ^
Mightymojo91 has declared Stanford the better team. Anyone who attempts to say otherwise is just “arrogant.” Talk about projection.
October 1st, 2018 at 10:15 AM ^
Way to double down on the stupidity. If your eyes are like your brain, I think it is very likely that you can easily apply the "simple" eye test.
The only way you argument makes any sense is:
If ND has gotten better faster than M has so that if they played now, ND would be Michigan by more than ND beat Stanford. Michigan wouldn't now have to beat ND to be ahead of Stanford, they could be ahead simply because they played a common opponent closer and given the limited data available, this could imply the M might be better than Stanford.
September 30th, 2018 at 4:54 PM ^
We Buckeye fans would salivate at a shot at ND should both schools make the playoffs.
September 30th, 2018 at 4:56 PM ^
OSU would lose to ND. That PSU win was lucky. You won't find 3 TDs aided by arm tackles against ND. Also Haskins is mediocre.
September 30th, 2018 at 5:11 PM ^
OSU would not lose to ND. I felt like we could have beaten ND. No reason to think Michigan beats Ohio state with the status quo
September 30th, 2018 at 5:20 PM ^
They would lose to ND. You are wrong. ND defense is legit and their passing game is not just QB draws. Book can pass.
September 30th, 2018 at 6:16 PM ^
Shirley you jest!!! OSU would curb stomp ND.
September 30th, 2018 at 7:38 PM ^
We Buckeye fans would salivate
What else is new? Wear a bib.
September 30th, 2018 at 4:54 PM ^
If ND wins in Blacksburg they're going to the playoff. The rest of their schedule is Charmin.
- OU vs. Alabama
- Mystery team TBD vs. ND
I think this may finally be the year we get LSU in a bowl.
September 30th, 2018 at 5:07 PM ^
If ND goes 12-0 they're in, but that also means that only 3 P5 conferences will be represented. I think Clemson will go undefeated. I know they didn't look great yesterday, but they got it done and are obviously better when Lawrence is back.
I think the Pac 12 is out already. If Oklahoma doesn't have a better record than the Big Ten champ, it will be the Big Ten champ over Oklahoma. I think Oklahoma will lose either to West Virginia (the Friday before The Game in Morgantown, going to be lit af),Oklahoma State, or Texas this weekend. They just usually stumble somewhere. That would probably make the playoffs:
1. Bama vs. 4. Clemson
2. Ohio State vs. 3. Notre Dame
or
1. Bama vs. 4. Clemson
2. Notre Dame vs. 3. Michigan (if we beat OSU in Columbus then win the conference we should leapfrog someone)
