I have a little tradition before the start of every major game. I sit in my chair, pour a glass of Blantons, and when the clock begins, I take a sip. The last three years. It’s not a perfect system but I’m a little superstitious. 
 

Well, it just so happens I decided to go see history in person. Brought a little plastic bottle, small enough to smuggle in, and got to my seat. Unscrewed the cap and took that sip. 
 

I was 8 years old the last time Michigan won. I moved to Ohio in 2006 as a sophomore in high school, the year where Michigan and OSU were 1 and 2 and Michigan narrowly lost. 
 

Then came the dark years. The mediocrity. The struggles. I know this to be true, though - struggle is what makes programs great. Struggle and triumph. The galling entitlement of OSU is because they don’t know, or don’t remember, that coal makes diamonds. This team, this program, this fanbase understands in a way that brings us together - Michigan vs Everybody. 
 

For the rest of my life, I will be able to say the words - I WAS THERE. And that little sip never tasted so sweet.

I've been a Michigan fan since 1975, my older brother's Freshman year at Michigan.

Since 1997, there have been some low points being a Michigan Football Fan...(not a complete list)

  • 2002 Llyod's team getting throttled by Tennessee....
  • Llyod leaves without a clear replacement.
  • Bill Martin mis-handling the Les Miles hiring that lead to RR
  • RR - the entire time.(except Denard...)
  • Dave Brandon hires Brady Hoke.  Nice guy, in way over his head.
  • The DB Coke ticket deal
  • Concussion-gate
  • Stake gate at MSU
  • Mork DiGiorno
  • Urban
  • Bama rolling Michigan and Denard in the Jerry World Dome
  • Hearing the little brother thing over and over (let it go, Sparty)
  • Trouble with the snap
  • The spot in the Shoe (by a referee crew from Ohio)
  • COVID 2-4    
  • The hard to understand loss to Sparty in 2021. (although I think that was the wakeup call for Team 142 to beat OSU)
  • The first two trips to the CFP

There have been some great moments since 1997, but Team 144 is SPECIAL.
