Alex Smith was widely considered a bust before he took the 49ers to the NFC Championship game under Harbaugh. I will add that if Ted Ginn Jr. had been healthy they might have made it to the Super Bowl, as they lost to the Giants in that then largely because of two fumbled punts by Ginn's backup.

I would add that Smith was playing well when he lost his job. He was injured for a game or two, and Kaepernick played well enough that Harbaugh decided to keep him in.

Great comeback! Happy for him. Alex seems like an awesome dude.

He's had a wild ride. Feels oddly appropriate for him to suit up for the Football Team.

From all accounts, Alex Smith is a good dude. Seems very family drive, humble, and has had a ton of adversity as a pro. Even when he had horrible coaching and was labeled a bust early, he never felt sorry for himself and just continued to work. I know he gets compared to Rodgers because he was taken above him, but there are a lot of qualities Smith has that are more admirable for being an upstanding man than his competitor.

And for the record, he’s probably better than Haskins right now too

I know medical pros cleared him but I REALLY think itd be best if he just retired. I seen pictures of his leg from not too long ago and it is gnarly. I assume one bad injury and amputation will be a done deal

There are some psychos in the league who will target his leg too

My thought also...because he can play doesn't mean he should.  He has a purported net worth over 50 million and the contract he signed in 2018 had a large portion of the 94 million guaranteed.  I can understand wanting to play but at 36 with what he has been through there might be some better alternatives.

Sort of surreal as a medicine story: like, he got a little grass / dirt inside him and almost died as a result! It's wild that we don't all die from infection by ~40.

This is a very rare instance of a somewhat positive sepsis recovery. Even then his leg is deformed and it took him multiple years and countless surgeries/therapy to get back to semi normal. A lot of ppl lose limbs or their lives. Truly a miracle he got to hear those words from doctors. I don’t know what he’ll do but I’m rooting for him no matter what.

His story and the name change are why I'm going to give WFT one more chance before I completely give up on them.  I may reconsider recanting my fandom if Snyder gets the fuck out of Dodge...such an asshole.

In order to be a successful NFL quarterback, there has to be some crazy determination in there. We've heard about Brady's training style and Peyton Manning's incessant film-watching and other examples. He lives to be out there on the field - amazing story.

Amazing story and amazing person. I never heard one bad thing about this guy while he was in KC. He played his ass off and taught the guy drafted to take his job how to be a pro in his last year. I can’t imagine going through what he has and still trying to play again.
