ACE: Tom Strobel Scouting Report
I forgot to post this in Weekday Warriors, and I think it's long enough that it works better as a message board post anyway, but reader Kent was at the Mentor-Solon game and came away with these impressions of Tom Strobel and a few other players:
Caught the first three quarters of the Mentor @ Solon game tonight. Both teams came in undefeated, but Mentor was the favorite. They did nothing to disappoint and scored on their first five possessions, and always had at least a two score lead.
· Strobel’s height and weight are the real deal, probably more 6’5” than 6’6” though. He’s got a big solid frame and can easily pack on more weight in college.
· I had him in on 4 tackles, 1 sack, another huge qb hit that caused a fumble. He may have recovered a fumble, but honestly couldn’t tell after they unpiled everyone. Everyone seemed to congratulate him, but that may have been just because he’s Tom Strobel.
· Solon ran a spread and largely ran away from Strobel’s side or threw quick passes
· At times he stood up a little to straight out of his stance, but that’s a criticism of every stud high school DL. When he did stay low and fire off, he just ran kids over or threw blockers off him like rag dolls. Which he should of, Solon’s tackled were probably in the 6’ 200lb range.
· He was also part of the FG block team that caved in the line and blocked an XP.
· Had a real good play holding the edge on a sweep his way, he would have made the play but got held pretty badly (which it was called)
· Other items of note, Mentor’s QB, Mitch Trubisky, was pretty impressive. He moved around well in the pocket, had good presence, solid arm, and accuracy. Overall pretty impressive. He’s a junior. He is listed in Rivals DB at 6’ 3”, 195. I think he’s definitely D1, but can’t say much more than that with any kind of confidence.
· Mentor has a sophomore WR, Brandon Fritts, he’s every bit of the listed 6’4”, maybe not all of 180. He is smooth, pretty fast, showed good hands (caught one off of shoe strings), and was targeted a bunch in the passing game.
· Mentor’s kicker can kick. He hit a 50 yarder, off a block, but still impressive. All his XP’s were flush as well. Not great at kickoffs though. Tomislav Derezic, he’s a senior. 6’ 230
Many thanks to Kent for the update. If anyone is inclined to go to any games involving Michigan commits and is willing to submit a report, feel free to shoot me an email. I will bribe you with MGoPoints, especially if you're able to come up with some film (though that is going above and beyond, obviously).

What are folks opinions about who between Strobel, Wormley and Godin is most likely to jump to the front of the line to get lots of playing time at the 5-tech next year? (potentially even starting if one of Black/Roh doesn't get moved to the other side)

I haven't seen Strobel yet, but I like his chances of taking that spot if it's up for grabs. Wormley has actually impressed me the least of the trio in terms of production and what I've seen from him in person. Godin is going to get a chance to play, as well—he's definitely got the size and I like his motor a lot.

Some have talked about Godin moving inside. As far as who steps up and plays could be who enrolls early. Right? Have we heard yet whether Strobel will enroll in January? The thing that has stood out for me is Strobel's brain. Back when he signed he had some very thoughtful comments and showed quit wit. Wormley seems like a winner too, can't go wrong with either.
This defense is going to be sick in a couple years - can't wait to see Strobel in the Big House.
edit: almost forgot....thanks ACE!

Either you're claiming Wormley has a drinking problem, or you're calling him a "whiner."
Do you have evidence (not anecdotal, but firm documented quotable evidence) backing up either assertion?

I thought I fixed it before ensuing-inevitable smarta$$ comments. I was wrong. You're quick on the draw my friend.

And you did, much better than my suggested explanations. Well done.

I am the provider of the original "scouting" report. I can't emphasize enough how much bigger Strobel (and Mentor) was than the Solon squad.
I'm hopeful Mentor and/or Whitmer meet St. Edwards in the playoffs, I'll definitely go if possible and will see them go up against Kalis.

IIRC, in an interview Godin said that Mattison told him that he will be playing the 5 tech position. Do you think that he is going to outgrow the 5 tech spot?

It will be interesting to see who goes where. At least we know that this staff knows where to put players to maxmize their skills.

has the frame to be the biggest, but I don't like my DT 6'6" as it makes it even more difficult for them to stay low.

Suh is 6'5"ish and I hear he's pretty good. Agree, Godin seems like the likely candidate but you never know.

Thanks for this, Kent & Ace. With the caveat that my information is pretty limited, here's my dumb prediction:
Five years from now, we'll look back at Strobel, Pipkins, and Ross as the three biggest gems from this class (of the kids who have committed so far).

Exact same players I was thinking. Plus Funchess.

Gets Strobel, the rest of his class, and the 2013 class, our defense is going to be scary. And I mean scary in a good way, not a GERG way.

I think Wormley and Godin most likely move inside.
Watching highlights of Stroebel was impressive, I was doing double takes at his change of direction agility. I think Stroebel is going to be a fantastic end when it is all said and done
As far as height of DT's, it doesn't seem to matter as far as rankings go. Any height from 6'2'' to 6'6'' seems perfectly fine. Maybe width is more important than height, seems you would definitely want wide bodies on the inside. The advantage of being 6'2'' is leverage. The advantage of 6'6'' is being able to put on more weight
