about calling THE OSU "Ohio"
Look what the guy at Rivals wrote...
"John Borton: A lot of folks apparently think it's cute that Michigan's head coach shortens the name of the final regular-season opponent. It's not. It's disrespectful, unseemly, and dripping with the sort of discourteousness a fellow Big Ten institution doesn't deserve, especially one that's been under attack for months by the ink-stained wretches.
It simply needs to stop, and stop now.
Michigan 27, O. 17"
What a douche. And then he goes on to write O.?
What do you all think? Why are his panties all up in a bunch over this? Or am I missing his sarcasm?
EDIT: On a closer read, I am thinking he is being sarcastic. I mean he says, "it simply needs to stp and stop now". and then O.17 (showing them getting beat by two scores).
Subtle sarcasm is good.

So it's alright that Tressel said that Ohio was going to kick our ass back in May.

I think
November 25th, 2011 at 4:07 PM ^
My guess is that he is an Ohio alum.

John Borton hangs out with Drew Sharp

Entities that refer to that school in Ohio as "Ohio"
1. Brady Hoke
2. Their own band
3. Their own fans

Also, their own scoreboard:
and anyone from Ohio of Hoke's generation:

when they stop pretending that they have TBDBITL. Also if they all bathe.
November 25th, 2011 at 4:11 PM ^
Borton wants us to stop doing something that OSU themselves does anyway.
No.
November 25th, 2011 at 4:13 PM ^
Ill stop calling them Ohio, when they stop calling us scUM. Which will be never.
November 25th, 2011 at 4:18 PM ^
I'll stop calling them Ohio when they remove "Ohio" from their scoreboard, stop their iconic script "Ohio", and stop their most famous cheer that spells "Ohio". Th

Yesterday, I had inlaws in town and they are Ohio fans. They were complaining about being called Ohio and I dropped the same stuff that you referenced above. They didn't know how to respond.
November 25th, 2011 at 10:30 PM ^
I think scUM is their pet name for their possible new head coach. 'sc Urban Meyer'.
November 25th, 2011 at 4:15 PM ^
The entire joke is that he spends the entire time talking about how disrespectful it is to shorten the institutions name from "The Ohio State University" to "Ohio." Then he shortens it to "O."
It's a joke, and a pretty dang funny one imo.
November 25th, 2011 at 4:18 PM ^
I changed what I wrote right before I read yours, and I agree. I missed it.
November 25th, 2011 at 4:16 PM ^
You're missing the sarcasm.
November 25th, 2011 at 4:21 PM ^
He is just trying to get your attention so you will read his article - and he has succeeded, sheepman.
November 25th, 2011 at 4:18 PM ^
It's exactly the appropriate dig at a school that refers to itself as THE Ohio State University.
November 25th, 2011 at 4:19 PM ^
"an Ohio State University"
Because they don't deserve the definite article.

What's that cheer they always yell out? OH - IO?
November 25th, 2011 at 4:37 PM ^
What does the band spell at halftime? OHIO.

O-I-H-O

Uhh, close, but that's not quite how they do it. Here's a picture...
November 26th, 2011 at 11:31 AM ^
It's not exclusive
November 25th, 2011 at 4:23 PM ^
It's obviously a joke... He explains how disrespectful it is to cut the name down to "Ohio" then he cuts it down further to simply "O" and predicts a michigan victory.... cmon.
November 25th, 2011 at 4:28 PM ^
When I read your post - I hear JOB Blueth's voice - CMON!
November 25th, 2011 at 7:30 PM ^
Like the guy in the five thousand dollar suit is going to hold the door... c'mon!
November 25th, 2011 at 4:24 PM ^
Lol the fuck? What do they spell out on the field with their "band?" What are they so proud they can spell? We learned it from the trailer trash itself.
November 25th, 2011 at 4:34 PM ^
Wasn't Wooddy Hayes the first one to start it by calling us that school up north? I don't know of it starting before then.
BEAT OHIO!!
November 25th, 2011 at 4:38 PM ^
These people have no historical sense whatsoever. Listen to the radio call of the 1950 Michigan/Ohio game:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tP1ZfZMbarI
Scroll to 6:20 for one of countless examples--if I'm not mistaken that is the Ohio radio announcer referring to Ohio as Ohio.
Beat Ohio.
November 25th, 2011 at 5:20 PM ^
Good find, you are right. My family always called them just Ohio. I never actually intended it as an insult, it was just what we said.
November 25th, 2011 at 4:41 PM ^
I'd hate to be called Ohio anything.
November 25th, 2011 at 4:42 PM ^
It's a good idea to further shorten the name from "Ohio" to "O," since the "O" could stand not only for "ohio' but also suggest a measure of the integrity of the school:
"zero".
November 25th, 2011 at 4:44 PM ^
It adds something to the rivalry. I like it. I mean, Ohio State basically is Ohio. Ohio's fandom is with us, not that bullshit commuter school in West Virginia.
November 25th, 2011 at 10:33 PM ^
That bullshit commuter school in West Virginia, which I am assuming you are referring to Ohio University in Athens, Ohio, made it to their conference championship game this year. I believe they are the only team with Ohio in the name to do so....
November 25th, 2011 at 4:48 PM ^
Hasnt John Borton been writing for The Wolverine for ages... I think he is on our side...
Anyway.. Beat Ohio.
November 25th, 2011 at 4:52 PM ^
Whether it was intentional or not, by calling it Ohio, Hoke has created yet another dimension in the rivalry. With OSU being a university that is so full of itself, it insists on calling itself "The Ohio State University", Hoke undercuts them by just saying 'I have always called the Ohio' and gotten our entire fan base to do likewise. Listening to the "Beat Ohio" chant at the Nebraska game was amazing. Then hearing it in Maui brought it to a whole new level. Whether intentional or accidential, Mr. Hoke--pure genius.

...Beat...Ohio???
Still has that ring to it
November 25th, 2011 at 5:07 PM ^
Jesus Christ, is today National Failing at Sarcasm Interpretation day?
Beat Ohio.
November 25th, 2011 at 5:56 PM ^
I hope that those who are UM grads will notice their misinterpretation.
November 25th, 2011 at 6:04 PM ^
Apparently.....The "O." was subtle, but not that subtle.
Hoke has created an efforless mechanism to bug the hell out of them for at least a generation (assuming we turn the tide on the field). The team and fanbase have entirely bought in...It's freaking brilliant.

If it pisses Ohio off, then Ohio they shall be. So it is written, so it shall be done!
November 25th, 2011 at 5:19 PM ^
Here is Les Miles referring to Ohio, as Ohio:
November 25th, 2011 at 5:31 PM ^
Nothing against guys taking their cue from Hoke, but I'm not really going to change how I refer to them just because our coach does. It is fashionable now to refer to them that way, and that's all good, but I think it's fine to say OSU.
November 25th, 2011 at 8:05 PM ^
Hoke's talking about Ohio, not Oklahoma State. Don't feel bad, though. Easy mistake to make.
November 25th, 2011 at 5:32 PM ^
Clearly, by "Beat ohio," Hoke means we are playing the entire state. Not necessarily the literal entire state because, well, Bo, Desmond, Chuck and, uh, Hoke. But definitely the concept of the state of ohio, as best exemplified by Jonathon Chait's "Life in ohio (A Continuing Series)."
