the economy was still a piece of shit. That's the way it's been for some time now; the economy has boomed for precious few while it's already felt like a recession to many people - especially in Ohio and Michigan - as far back as 2005 and even farther back in the Mitten. I don't agree with the response but I do see the sense behind it. Most Ohioans and most Americans in general were simply not reaping the benefits of the economy even when the Dow was breaking records (the good ones) daily.

I'm with Frankie.  I got like 40 years til I retire.  I got time before I need my money out of the DJIA and whatever else it's in.  (This is not to imply that I have phat stax of it.)  And in the meantime, fuck Ohio State.

...own stock? OF COURSE they would rather see OSU beat UM. The only thing that would mean more to them would be getting a new forklift at work....

Look, Michigan and Ohio are both heavily industrial states (although, becoming less so as shit worsens). There auto industry, and manufacturing industries in general, have been going belly-up for about 5 years - long before the market took a dive. When you got laid off, have a crappier job as a result, you're probably not heavily invested in the stock market, and this fluctuation in the Dow isn't going to have a tangible effect on people's lives until companies can't issue short-term debt to meet payroll, fund projects, etc. Until then, the results of a football game have a much more tangible effect on their life.
