50 Years Ago Today: Carl Grapentine's First Game

Submitted by BursleyHall82 on September 19th, 2020 at 10:05 AM

Carl posted this on Facebook this morning. It was a half-century ago today that the Voice of the Big House was first heard in our land. He started as the announcer for the marching band and eventually became the announcer for everything.

There is nothing that sends chills down my spine like Carl Grapentine's "Bannnnnnd, take the field!"

And as you see, today is another special anniversary, as well.

Happy 50th, Carl! And here's to many more!

(edit: I'm making this thread honoring a True Big House Icon "sticky" for at least a few days, to keep it from being quickly lost beneath a pile of new threads about our upcoming 2020 schedule.

For anyone who in normal years attends games at Michigan Stadium, we're all going to miss his golden voice this season.  Carl deserves this honor.) ---rob f

I know that Carl posts occasionally on the MGoBoard.

So to Carl: Congratulations on your Golden Michigan Anniversary as the Golden Voice of The Big House!

Howard King was the announcer for my first 15 or so years as a season ticket holder and Carl for the last 15 or so.  When Carl eventually retires that will be a long legacy of class with big shoes to fill.  I hope M continues with the standard of dignity he and Mr. King have set, and not go to some hype man or cheerleader so many other places have.
