2024 DE Darien Mayo names M to top six

Olney (MD) Good Counsel defensive end Darien Mayo (4-star, #17 edge, #181 overall) named Michigan to his top six. He's 6'7" and 250 lbs., and he's a teammate of top-100 linebacker Aaron Chiles. They've talked about being a package deal at the next level, and Chiles is expected to pick Michigan, though there are no crystal balls in place for Mayo. The rest of the top six is made up of Clemson, Maryland, Ohio State, South Carolina, and USC.

Class of 2025 quarterback Cutter Boley (4-star, #6 QB, #72 overall) committed to Kentucky yesterday. He was high on Michigan, but he might be reclassifying to the 2024 class, and Michigan is not interested in potentially rocking the boat with Jadyn Davis by taking another QB in 2024. I thought for a while that Boley would be Michigan's QB for 2025, but you never know with recruiting.

This seems like a good thing. More exposure can only help.

I'd be curious to know how the staff handles that, considering he could end up doing so and then committing elsewhere in the end.

I have no doubt they'd be professional and supportive throughout. While slightly different, Harbaugh hosted Jameis Winston for some pre-draft prep work early in his tenure here (and there might be more, less high profile, examples). And there's no reason to be petty. Even if we don't get Underwood, this is just one more example of the culture we're building here, and could have a positive impact on other recruits ("hey, we're gonna support you even if you don't end up picking our school"), plus who knows, building a good relationship could keep the door open for him to transfer here if he doesn't pick us initially.

If he’d be willing to commit to Michigan, I’m sure that’s the case. But that’s far from certain, and looked extremely unlikely a couple months ago while the recruitment of Boley was going really well. “I thought for a while” probably refers to that point in time.

Boley apparently was a 2024 recruit that moved into the 2025 class due to CoVid.

Kentucky fans are very confident he is going to reclassify back into the 2024 class.

We have a great shot at the following at EDGE (position rankings used):

  1. #11 Brian Robinson (leader but Kentucky is catching up)
  2. #17 Darien Mayo (probably top 2 with OSU)
  3. #18 Jacob Smith (leader)
  4. #20 Elias Rudolph (leader according to On3)
  5. #28 Devon Baxter (leader or close to it)
  6. #31 Dominic Nichols (leader)

I think we're still shooting our shot with 5* Dylan Stewart and Elijah Rushing as well as Top 100 Marquise Lightfoot. I'm less optimistic there.

Other name I've seen as a sleeper is Elijah Newby who is a teammate of the Smith twins. Newby is already a 4* on 247 so he is definitely a riser.

Lots of possibilities here, so I'm interested to see how things shake out. I'm sure there will be a shift or two based on how guys size up on their official visits.

I think M has to take Smith or risk losing his brother.  This probably leaves 1 open spot as I don't believe they are looking for more than 2 true WDE types since M already has Cole Sullivan and Mason Curtis that are going to be looked at for the OLB/Edge role that Harrell currently plays.

My guess is that they try to hold off for Mayo - whom the staff seems to view as a top 100 level prospect.  If Mayo goes elsewhere they will go after Robinson or one of the others on your list.  As with 5* at other positions - if Stewart or Rushing decide to choose M later in the process you take them no matter who is already in the fold.

I'd put Lightfoot and the other D Line guy out of Chicago in the no matter category as well. In fact he's visiting soon. I'm hearing from others that we probably don't get either and we shouldn't expend the resources but I still have my fingers crossed.
