2021 QB Alexander Honig: Another German to Ann Arbor?

Submitted by njvictor on July 13th, 2019 at 12:26 PM

This Bleacher Report article got published a few days ago about German 2021 QB Alexander Honig. He's 6'6" with a 38" vertical, 11" inch hands and runs a 4.7 40. His measurables are obviously pretty crazy, he has gone to Michigan camps, and Michigan has shown some interest. I'm not sure how seriously we're pursuing this kid, especially with JJ McCarthy in the mix, but I wouldn't be opposed to bringing in a guy like this as a second developmental QB in the class or even converting this dude to a TE

What are people's opinions on Honig?

I would be interested in bringing him into the class. With his measurables he would make a monster TE, and Michigan can point to Zach Gentry to show success in making the QB to TE transition.

We own Germany, NJ and Maryland.   Need to get Michigan and Ohio back too.  OSU and PSU have taken a few players that should have gone to Michigan.  Luckily the only player I can think of that went to MSU was McDowell.  (Of course maybe we could have set him on a straighter path.)

I think that depends on circumstance. Bama, Florida, PSU and some others took two QBs in the last class. It's hard to take two that are both ranked high, hard if you have at least one in the classes ahead of them.

Michigan won't be in a good position to take two in 2021 with McCarthy and the depth on the roster.

Bring him aboard. The offense has lacked athleticism for too long. He can be a weapon in some capacity. However, I wouldn’t get my hopes up because I’m sure some school will sell the idea of him being their QB for the future during the recruiting process. If he wants to play quarterback at this level it would be tough at Michigan.

I saw honig and hoped he wasn't in the same class as McCarthy. Cannot imagine any scenario where he comes to us with McCarthy in fold.

Dick Honig (der Honig is "honey" in German) was an M baseball player in the early 60s, a teammate of John Kerr. Dick had a short stint with the Tigers, and maybe other teams, but he is best known for his longtime officiating career in the Big Ten and other conferences. Given that Alexander comes directly from the Fatherland, it's doubtful he and Dick are related, but one never knows. Go Blue.

Without know more about QB skills, I'd say the TE route would be better for someone almost 6-6, big hands, 230 pounds, and can run a 4.7.  Michigan has a great pipeline of QB talent already in place, and I'd think devoting another scholarship to a guy with more unknown potential is too risky.  However, if he were a PWO, that would be another matter.

Eh, I'd pass on him.  Quarterback is a position where experience is incredibly important.  I doubt playing QB in Germany has given him valuable experience reading defenses, understanding different coverage schemes, or finding open receivers.  He should probably convert to TE now since I can't imagine any high-level D1 team playing him at QB.

I would love for the 1997 ish era where we actually had a 2 qb race where both were great. I think as harbaugh states, competition makes us better. This holds if you are a competitor. Few top schools over the years have really pulled this off, its more "your time will come in two years" for the five star one class behind.

I know Michigan is ground and pound, but the more we air it out and let our QBs showcase what they have, the easier it is to actually have a two deep.
