2021 QB Alexander Honig: Another German to Ann Arbor?
This Bleacher Report article got published a few days ago about German 2021 QB Alexander Honig. He's 6'6" with a 38" vertical, 11" inch hands and runs a 4.7 40. His measurables are obviously pretty crazy, he has gone to Michigan camps, and Michigan has shown some interest. I'm not sure how seriously we're pursuing this kid, especially with JJ McCarthy in the mix, but I wouldn't be opposed to bringing in a guy like this as a second developmental QB in the class or even converting this dude to a TE
What are people's opinions on Honig?
I would be interested in bringing him into the class. With his measurables he would make a monster TE, and Michigan can point to Zach Gentry to show success in making the QB to TE transition.
After last years OSU game do you really want to hold up Gentry as a shining example of a successful TE? Go ahead and neg away.
Even Beyond the osu game, his career was pretty unremarkable
Yeah, come here switch to TE and we'll refuse to use you and the rest of the passing game properly is not a great recruiting pitch.
tbh though, that was with the last guy, coach run it up the middle into a stacked box three times then punt. Thankfully he's moved on.
If what you saw was obvious to you and not our head coach that has to be troublesome. Hopefully we have next level o coordinators going foward but i would say Harbaugh was the leader of last years offense to be honest.
I agree, but he did become a fifth round draft pick from an unremarkable college career.
We have shown that we use a TE, yet to show that we can develop a TE. Iowa on the other hand...
They turned a QB into an NFL early entry draft pick. That's actually pretty good if you put a little thought into it. Funny how Jake Butt has been forgotten already.
Hockenson was a top 10 pick because he was consistent and can block. We have yet to develop a TE, including Butt, who can block.

Done!
Negged, as requested.
ALL the big B1G Germans!
We own Germany, NJ and Maryland. Need to get Michigan and Ohio back too. OSU and PSU have taken a few players that should have gone to Michigan. Luckily the only player I can think of that went to MSU was McDowell. (Of course maybe we could have set him on a straighter path.)
He's a Unicorn!
A Schwäbisch Hall Unicorn.
Two quarterback classes are likely a thing of the past for most P5 teams.
Probably true, which is why taking one or two walkon QBs every year is a good idea.
Yes and no.
Teams are still bringing in multiple QBs if the depth chart calls for it but now the other guy is usually a transfer.
I think that depends on circumstance. Bama, Florida, PSU and some others took two QBs in the last class. It's hard to take two that are both ranked high, hard if you have at least one in the classes ahead of them.
Michigan won't be in a good position to take two in 2021 with McCarthy and the depth on the roster.
Whenever I hear two quarterback class, I always think of Kevin Newsome and Shavodrick Beaver. Good times
Newsome/Beaver.
Yeah, those sure used to be good times...
?
Newsome and Beaver. Neither amounted to anything. The guy we missed from that era was Tajh Boyd.
Well, his user name indicates he should be a good leader and continue to sharpen his skills :)
GoBlue!
Bring him aboard. The offense has lacked athleticism for too long. He can be a weapon in some capacity. However, I wouldn’t get my hopes up because I’m sure some school will sell the idea of him being their QB for the future during the recruiting process. If he wants to play quarterback at this level it would be tough at Michigan.
I'm for the German law firm of Wagner Wagner Welschoff and Honig.
While we're at it, can Mel Pearson recruit Moritz Seider?
Right. A John Navarre clone would be a perfect fit for the spread offense.
I wasn't aware Navarre ran a 4.7 40
Navarre ran a 4.7 20.
Kinda like my shooting a 68 -- for 9 holes.
I’ll have one if and when he ever commits. Until then who cares.
I used to buy my sports officiating gear at Honig's Whistle Stop.
Are you old enough to have bought your equipment when he sold it out of his garage?
Hey Bob Timberlake...whatever became of Jim Detwiler?
I saw honig and hoped he wasn't in the same class as McCarthy. Cannot imagine any scenario where he comes to us with McCarthy in fold.
This would make me so happy!
Dick Honig (der Honig is "honey" in German) was an M baseball player in the early 60s, a teammate of John Kerr. Dick had a short stint with the Tigers, and maybe other teams, but he is best known for his longtime officiating career in the Big Ten and other conferences. Given that Alexander comes directly from the Fatherland, it's doubtful he and Dick are related, but one never knows. Go Blue.
Without know more about QB skills, I'd say the TE route would be better for someone almost 6-6, big hands, 230 pounds, and can run a 4.7. Michigan has a great pipeline of QB talent already in place, and I'd think devoting another scholarship to a guy with more unknown potential is too risky. However, if he were a PWO, that would be another matter.
MAC/AAC talent at best.
Guy can be a Martian for all I care. If he plays good football, then he's welcome on the team.
Eh, I'd pass on him. Quarterback is a position where experience is incredibly important. I doubt playing QB in Germany has given him valuable experience reading defenses, understanding different coverage schemes, or finding open receivers. He should probably convert to TE now since I can't imagine any high-level D1 team playing him at QB.
If he's got that speed and hands and can dial purpose as a 6-6 TE I'm sure it would drive opponents crazy having two options on the field, even if he only has to make one read: bomb or run.
I like how you basically said the same thing as umbig11 but with more reasoning and you are getting negged for it.
I would love for the 1997 ish era where we actually had a 2 qb race where both were great. I think as harbaugh states, competition makes us better. This holds if you are a competitor. Few top schools over the years have really pulled this off, its more "your time will come in two years" for the five star one class behind.
I know Michigan is ground and pound, but the more we air it out and let our QBs showcase what they have, the easier it is to actually have a two deep.
