2015 Home UTL

Submitted by MichiganPhotoRod on

As a refresher, the great and powerful Hackett announced back in February that a home night game was being planned this season.

As of this writing, kickoff for BYU, MSU, Rutgers and OSU are TBA.

I'm liking the reasoning that, perhaps, it could be MSU this year.  How fun would that be?

EDIT: Stand corrected.  Missed the reversal announcement.

It took 132 years to play a night game at home for a reason.

The only night game-like substance that should've happened at Michigan was Braylonfest on Halloween eve.

The 2011 night game was pretty cool because it was a novelty. But those should only happen once every 10 years or so. Make it SPECIAL. Michigan-Oklahoma in the 20s should be at night because that's an ultra rare meeting of the two programs.

is also historically inaccurate.  Before the deluge of televised games in 1980's Michigan kicked off its home games at 1pm and television even followed suit.  Bo didn't grumble about kicking off at noon, Bo grumbled about television dictating the starting times (which were usually noon).

I really don't like noon games myself for many of the reasons others have stated.  Until a few years ago I had a longer drive to games and I hated with a passion waking up at 5:30 am to get ready to hit the road.  The whole morning felt rushed.

3:30 just feels right.  Time for the day to feel like football, can take my time getting to the games, and home.  In general more flexibility before and after games.  Later in the year the approaching twilight adds a nice touch to the atmosphere and infact I'd prefer every game started 2 hours before sunset, like the Rose Bowl.  Terrific atmosphere.

Exactly this. I personally don't know a soul who prefers noon games and I have plenty of B1G and SEC friends who are die hard tailgating/game attending fans. Biggest complaints are is that tailgating is too rushed because of the time (too early for what they want to drink and rather eat---bloody marys and "brunch" tailgate food get old real quick) and the atmosphere is typically not as fun as the later games. For the games I have attended, I would agree with this.

For me personally, I like to get my errands and other things accomplished Sat mornings instead of rushing home to try to catch the noon kickoff. By 3-3:30pm I have everything I need done to enjoy the rest of the day/night of football and even had time to make some football food/snacks.

Unless you are 90 years old and in bed by 4pm, or have an obligation later in the day,  I don't get the appeal either.

My conspiracy guess is there's some advantage to a team that's drilled to get up early.  Such as UM may be, I don't fully know.

But, for a road team, my guess is there's an awful lot of stuff that has to be done in a short amount of time.

TL;DR put the opposition out of their comfort zone.

Year of Revenge II

We all, myself included, have our own selfish preferences as to when a game should start.  8-8:30 is not my favorite start time at age 62.

I happen to think that one big night game a year at home is a good idea for the program.  It gives us national TV exposure, and makes it easier for alumni all over the world the opportunity to come together in support of UM.  Fans generally love it.  Potential recruits think it is cool.

I also believe that UM/MSU at night is worth the increased risk of bad behavior by drunken fans.  It would be a good opportunity for UM and MSU to agree on something---that a football game is a pretty minor thing in the scheme of life, and a much more important value would be to show the rest of the country that we can have a night game between rivals in the spirit of good sportmanship.  Perhaps a joint campaign to keep the game safe?  Wish UM/MSU this year was at night.  Would be less inclined to move OSU game because of tradition, but new tradtions can always be started.

That said, I am so tired of Mike Dantoni I could puke...

I almost want a win in that game more than Ohio State.

drives me nuts.

My preference is an early UM game and a late EMU game so I can do a doubleheader like I did in 2005. Talk about glorious. Two college football games in one day in September weather. Simply awesome.

The odd thing was that UM lost  to ND and EMU defeated Louisiana-Monroe.(It was the game where UM turned the ball three times inside the 5. )

A surprising beautiful sight is sitting at the top of Rynearson's stands at dusk and looking out over the Ypsi-Ann Arbor area.

Bring back the original Big 10, play every game at noon, no divisions or conference title game, and champ plays the PAC in the Rose Bowl. Don't particularly give a damn about playoffs. Have a poll if you like.

I love this sport but they're screwing it up trying to be NFL-lite.
