This game had the most exciting buildup of any game in the history of games.
And it was the second most exciting, and the most excruciating, game I can remember, right behind, and ahead of, the Michigan-Texas Rose Bowl.

I was still in high school at the time and I remember I placed a bet with my Drafting teacher. He was a big Ohio State fan and he said that if Ohio lost I wouldnt have to turn in any work for a week but if they won I had to write a 5 page essay on Ohio state. I never ended up finishing the paper

Watching this at ABC, I couldn't even eat my burger. Maybe it's part of being a Michigan fan to cringe through every game your team plays, and it's certainly something I've gotten used to, but I remember being on the verge of nausea throughout the whole thing. What an incredible game.
I feel like what they say in the video is true, though -- this WAS the national championship game. Two undefeated teams, bonkers defense and Hart-Long-Henne against the most exciting Tressel offense since 2001. . .I'm looking forward to Rod's teams, but damn if I wouldn't have died happy reliving this game if they'd won it.

The buildup to this game was incredible. During the Michigan-Northwestern game (around Halloween), they had a countdown timer to kickoff of the Michigan-OSU game. Both teams were ranked at least in the top 5 by then, and both of them had virtually no chance of losing a game in the next three weeks. Everyone knew it would be 11-0 vs. 11-0 back in October. Then Bo's untimely and death the day before the game added an incredibly bizarre twist to it all. He died just in time so that he could watch the game next to Woody Hayes on a couch somewhere in football's Valhalla.
Then the defense pulled the greatest tanking job in the history of the program. Ugh. I hate this game after Michigan's opening posession.
I sometimes wonder if we would have won that game if I'd be rewatching it everyday of my life. But we didn't and I never want to see it again.
We would have won it if the NFL talent-laden defense hadn't been so piss poor that day. That wretched shitfest is up there with the 2000 Northwestern debacle. It wouldn't be so frustrating if the exact same thing hadn't happened two years earlier and if it wasn't the middle game in a five-game losing streak. That was our best chance to win it in a while now.
Dammit.
Even if OSU outplayed us that day, I am still convinced that the shitty turf played a huge role in the outcome. The secondary was weak, but would Michigan's defenders be better able to handle OSU's offense and/or adjust had the turf not been complete crap? For one thing, I think that Pittman and Wells wouldn't have been able to pull off such huge TD runs.
Tressel had a good game plan and that was a talented OSU team. I just believe that maybe things would have ended differently if the game wasn't played in mud. Maybe we still would have lost, but I doubt that either defense would have given up as much yardage.
i definately agree with you there. our guys were slipping all over the place. i dont wanna blame the turf the reason we lost the game but it was part of the reason
I'm pretty sure both teams played on the same field.
Only one played on it all year though and knew what to expect.
But I can't lie - it makes me kinda sad to watch it because of the tarnished memories of that game.
Makes me puke.
it was fun to watch that just because the rivalry seemed empty last year and the game was so boring the year before. i was so spoiled as a freshmen to have #1 v #2 in the game
