Field Hockey is a great sport, one of my favorites in the Olympics, and should be played by men and women in this country, that is all.
October 15th, 2021 at 3:24 PM ^
It is a good sport, but it's a bizarre concept. Why would someone create a sport where you have to advance a ball with a stick over a high friction surface? It's like curling over gravel, or swamp polo.
October 15th, 2021 at 6:02 PM ^
It’s also bizarre because only one side of the stick is flat.
October 15th, 2021 at 3:52 PM ^
I can’t get passed the idea that like 30% of goals come off a situation that involves just someone having the ball accidentally hit their foot.
Also it hurts my back just to watch them run around hunched over
October 15th, 2021 at 4:04 PM ^
So this is an invention of the modern field hockey game - traditionally the game was played on grass a slower surface, where stickhandling was paramount, with wristy finishes. The modern game is played on astroturf, where the ball moves too fast (almost skidding) so it's hard to mount a tactical attack. Therefore the game gets mucked up to where it's just dump it in the scoring circle, and try to draw a penalty corner

Lacrosse is a GREAT sport that should be played by men and women in this country.
Field hockey is an odd game played by elite peoples kids.
October 15th, 2021 at 4:08 PM ^
I mean that's how it's been accepted in the US, but historically the best teams were from India, where villagers used to beat their colonial overlords by scores of 12-0. Fun fact, Britain did not send a field hockey team to the Olympics from 1928 (Field Hockey's modern debut in the Olympics) until 1948, when London hosted, due to fears that they would get embarrassed by one of their colonies.
It's only in the US where it's an elite east coast women's prep sport.

Totally agree. Lacrosse is a great sport. Field Hockey looks like the players left over that couldn't make the Lacrosse team.
October 15th, 2021 at 5:06 PM ^
I'm glad you enjoy the sport. I see the opposite. I'm watching and I see nothing that comes close to being great about this sport.
October 15th, 2021 at 5:17 PM ^
thank you for sharing that with me
October 15th, 2021 at 5:31 PM ^
Not a problem. I posted my comment during the OT/ Penalty shot portion of the game.
October 15th, 2021 at 3:05 PM ^
Thanks for the tip.
October 15th, 2021 at 3:06 PM ^
What was that camera angle at the start of the game lmao
October 15th, 2021 at 3:11 PM ^
I am not watching, and do not know what you're talking about, but I have been watching lots of women's soccer with my daughter, who is fanatical. And lots of times when the camera pauses on a player's posterior, my wife and daughter start cussing. I keep my mouth and tongue firmly where they belong, but it is a reminder that admiring people's bodies and watching them do astonishing things with them is part of the appeal of sport. Going all the way back to the first Olympics.
October 15th, 2021 at 3:13 PM ^
yeah it looks like the cameraman is just in the stands (reasonable for a broadcast in a small stadium) but the first minute of the game had people in the stands covering half the camera haha
October 15th, 2021 at 7:24 PM ^
Wasn’t everyone naked in the first Olympics?
October 15th, 2021 at 3:29 PM ^
0-0 after 1
October 15th, 2021 at 3:30 PM ^
I… do not understand this sport
October 15th, 2021 at 3:48 PM ^
Well, it's far easier to understand field hockey than it is, say, Canadian football.
Seriously, what the hell is this?
October 15th, 2021 at 3:55 PM ^
what did you expect, they can't even say the word 'a-boot'.
October 15th, 2021 at 3:48 PM ^
0-0 at halftime
October 15th, 2021 at 3:51 PM ^
I hate that women’s sports allows for no physical contact
October 15th, 2021 at 4:10 PM ^
So this isn't a women's sport thing here but a field hockey thing - even the men's game is non-contact, to the point that left handed sticks are banned because it would be too much contact with both sticks attacking the ball from the same side.

1-0 Michigan

Good third period for Michigan so far.

Tuned in to BTN on FoxSports Live just in time to see the goal!
Go, Ladies, go!

Let's go Blue!!! Keep it up ladies. Fifteen minutes to go.

Iowa starts the 4th quarter down a player for 5 minutes after a yellow card.
October 15th, 2021 at 4:21 PM ^
The B1G has six of the top 10 teams in the latest poll.
October 15th, 2021 at 4:25 PM ^
Man, I gotta say that I pride myself on understanding many sports but field hockey confuses me quite a bit, but I'm rooting like crazy for our Lady Wolverines!
Even though we have the lead it feels like Iowa had played better, our passing has been suspect, hold on to the lead and add on to it, Go Blue!!!!
October 15th, 2021 at 4:35 PM ^
As a first time viewer, I am completely lost on the rules. It’s very confusing in terms of whistles and possessions for me.
October 15th, 2021 at 4:39 PM ^
It appears that everything Michigan does is a penalty.
October 15th, 2021 at 4:35 PM ^
Fricking John O'Neill is reffing this. 7 corners to one??????
October 15th, 2021 at 4:36 PM ^
Refs ready to screw Michigan as usual. What a joke.
October 15th, 2021 at 4:38 PM ^
OVERTIME!
Iowa scores late to tie it.
October 15th, 2021 at 4:38 PM ^
Sorry but how the fuck does Iowa have 7 corners to Michigan’s 1?
total horseshit
October 15th, 2021 at 4:41 PM ^
I mean they have pretty significantly outplayed Michigan overall and penalty corners are mostly from balls hitting feet in the penalty area where Iowa has had significantly more pressure than Michigan.
Michigan took a deeply stupid and clear penalty that put them down a player for 5 of the last 7 minutes and Iowa poured it on pressure wise. Hope to be wrong but Iowa looks like the better team, Michigan has like 3 shots this game and can’t posses the ball at all
October 15th, 2021 at 4:42 PM ^
They've had more possession, which probably matters? I remain confused what the rules are.
October 15th, 2021 at 4:39 PM ^
One-one tie - like kissing your sister. UM really outplayed them but . . . referee sucked.
October 15th, 2021 at 4:41 PM ^
OT. Let's score first.
October 15th, 2021 at 4:44 PM ^
Thanks for the heads-up, OP.

Michigan has definitely been more aggressive in OT but still can’t punch it in.

Michigan goalie with a huge save.
