The 17th best athlete in Michigan History is...

Chris Webber

While a Michigan Wolverine, Webber led the group of players known as the Fab Five, which included himself, Juwan Howard, Jalen Rose, Jimmy King, and Ray Jackson. This group, all of whom entered Michigan as freshmen in the fall of 1991, took the basketball team to the NCAA finals twice, losing both times.

During his time at Michigan he earned firs team All-American honors in 1993, USBWA National Freshman of the Yeah in 1992. In highschool he was a McDonals All-American MVP, NAismith Prep Player of the Year, and Mr. Basketball Michigan.

In the 1993 NBA draft, Webber was selected #1 overall by the Orlando Magic but was traded to the Golden State Warriors. In the NBA, he was NBA Rookie of the Year in 1994, NBA rebounding leader in 1999, All-NBA third team in 2000, All NBA second team in 1999, 2002, and 2003, All-NBA first team in NBA All-Star in 1997, 2000, 2001, 2002, and 2003.

There is a good 30 for 30 on the Fab Five that you should watch if you haven't already.

Here  is a Chris Webber highlight video.

Never forget I was in 8th grade when he was a senior and saw him play in the State Championships at Crisler arena.  He wasn't even trying and scored in the 40's. I know. Cool stroy bro.

I've always wondered if Webber had played with Shaq, how good they could've been. If they brought in like a descent point guard because they wouldn't have had Penny I'm guessing. Would the Bulls had been able to beat them? Just say Van Exel was the point guard. GOAT hands down!

Chris is a lightning rod for Michigan fans no doubt. I neither hate nor love him. He had more talent than anyone I have seen play at Michigan (I go back to Cazzie). He was the best player on an enormously exciting Michigan team that accomplished a lot though falling short of the top prize.

Still he was petulant and disappointing at the time when as noted above (and recounted in the Mitch Alboom book) he complained about not having enough money to buy a pizza, given what we know now. His failure to give an apology when he became a mature adult bothers me more.

His infamous time out call after escaping a traveling call seconds earlier, was not that much of an anomaly as for all of his talent he tended to panic in clutch situations. I saw it again in the the one serious title run his team made in the NBA. He would play great through-out the games but at crunch time could not get rid of the ball quickly enough. There is no fab  5 without Chris but if you look at the team huddles during timeouts, Jalen was the emotional leader of that team.

I'll be curious to see what other basketball players are on this list. Chris was a rare athlete of size, power, and speed. He dominated (most of the time) like few other basketball players before or after him. Admittedly, I do hope Rudy T and Glenn Rice make the list somewhere! However, I fear there may be some recency bias in this list's responses!
