11/23: "WAAAY TOO EARLY" '14-'15 Depth Chart

Submitted by Mr. Yost on

...last time I made this, people jumped down my throat cause I was overreacting after a shitty win (UConn). I wasn't, I truly wanted to "look ahead" since I believe we were going into a Bye Week.

Now? Now I'll admit it. I'm looking to next season.

I'd say 2014 is Hoke make or break year. We all heard that 4 years is benchmark (insert RR sympathy here) and coming off potential 7-5 season and under .500 in conference record anything less than 9 wins and Hoke might be gone.

If its the same coaching staff, 10 wins is going to be tough.  I count 8 that they could/should win.  OSU, MSU, ND, and maybe Penn State will be tough outs.  And there's no way this team makes the requistite 2-3 level jump that its going to take to beat Ohio State on the road.

You respond to a comment that says less than 9 wins will result in losing his job by saying, "Ehhh. If we win 10 games next year and beat Ohio. I don't think Hoke loses his job." Does not compute.

If you think Rich Rod was done wrong, do you really want the same for Hoke?

Is the priority to prove the other "M faction" wrong, or to see Michigan football do well? You are entitled to believe that Hoke isn't the guy and make your case.  However, why is a comparison to Rich Rod even relevant other than for some sort of fanbase partisianship?

It isn't my intention to start some throw-back flame war.  It just that I've seen several references to Rich Rod today.  I don't get it.

I've seen this tripe brought up a lot and I don't get it either.

I was constantly called one of the biggest "Rich Rod apologists" on the board for his entire tenure.

Then he was fired (which I was not happy about), and I immediately bought into Hoke precisely because I didn't want to see what happened to RR happen to the next coach (Now I'm one of the biggest "Hoke apologists" on the board).

Now people are acting like because we were huge douche bags to RR, somehow Hoke deserves the same treatment because, "Well, that's what happened to Rich Rod," all the while acknowledging what a terrible thing that was.

It's truly fascinating.

I don't feel bad for looking ahead to future years. I still want this team to win, I'll still root hard. But they're not playing for anything at this point. If "THIS IS MICHIGAN" than I can go ahead and start looking ahead to see when teams may meet our standards as a program.

Go Blue. Beat Ohio.

I support Mr. Yost.  This is season is essentially over (I wish it were because OSU will do bad things) so we might as well do SOMETHING fun and speculate a little bit.

I feel that Hoke's make or break year is next year which is really bad for him considering our away schedule.  MSU is probably at their peak right now and will likely embarass us again on the road :(

I don't have a problem with the post.  I think I am with Yost regarding how I feel about the season and looking to the future helps ease the pain from the loss.  But, I don't think that defensive attitude the "STFU" is really neccessary.  They have the right to voice they disagreement with you and it's in bad taste to be so defensive about it.  Unless you're a mod you shouldn't be telling people what to do.  Disagree with them fine, but don't them what to do.  Let them have them have their opinion and move on.

I too agree with Yost and it eases the pain as fans to look ahead. It is all we have at this point. But others can have their opinion. I would like to share mine and hear feedback. We all hoped Hoke was the answer. He will be back next year and I see 8 wins on that schedule if all goes well. That will be ten years without a Big Ten Championship. We are not competitive at this point with MSU or Ohio and far from it. See our record against them the last 6 years and more in Ohio's case. You can look at the future depth chart but Gardner is not a good quarterback. A good young man and a good athlete but not a good quarterback. To many bad decisions and slow to make a decision. Too many turnovers. How will our offensive line be when the only two solid lineman graduate. Young is fine but good is a different matter. Our defense will be strong but there is nothing to say this offense will be any better. I ask this. Any fear that players will start transfering and recruits start falling off? When that starts we are in a real tailspin. Hoping for the best. February will be a key time as well as next season. My last two comments. If anyone read 3 and out by John Bacon Les Miles should be here if things were done right. A Big Ten with Urban Meyer and Les Miles? But that is in the past. Many top programs have been through this. Alabama had many coaches and failed before Saban came in. USC struggled after Robinson left. Florida is down and there are many others including Notre Dame. Once you start searching for the right coach it is a crap shoot until you finally find the right one and return to where you need to be. Sometimes schools get it right, right away. It will feel good someday when we get back to where we need to be again. Depth and youth are good for the future but only if they are caoched well. It is doubtful this coaching staff can coach well. That is the fear. Hope Mattison Stays and does not get fed up with this mess. Go Blue!

Is Hoke the answer?...idk.  Mattison's track record and Hoke's recruiting success have earned them both 2 more years imo.  Borges needs to go asap though.  Next year's team should just like this year's, but a little better.  I still have faith Gardner COULD be good with the right coaching and scheme.  He has shown it before.  He needs better line play though. And, he needs better coaching.  We will be more competitive with MSU and OSU next year.  MSU finally graduates that great class of defensive players.  OSU graduates 3/4 DBs and 4/5 offensive lineman.  Their offfensive line will be just like ours next year, with a lot of 2nd and 3rd (mostly true sophomores and juniors) year players.  However, ours will have more starts and snaps under their belt.  Their o-line should struggle next year, although will still probably be better than ours due to coaching.

Will recruits start to jump ship?  I think the way the season played out hurt our chances with top guys like Hand.  It may also cost us McDowell.  I think we hold onto Peppers.  But, if we have another year like this one it will get worse.  Next year is big for us and we need improvement which is why we have to fire Borges and get some offensive change NOW.  I would have loved a big name like Miles, but no sense crying over spilled milk.  Hoke is our coach and will be next year.  Ultimately if we want to have OSU's success I believe our next coach has to be a national recognized top coach like Meyer was.  If we got Harbaugh we would have had that, same with Miles, but it didn't happen.  It has to happen for our next coach down the road.  That's all I got.

"This is a completely unnecessary thread five minutes after the Iowa game ends. At this point, looking ahead, 14-15 isn't looking ahead. Ohio State is looking ahead. End of story." Of course '14-'15 is looking ahead. And who are you to say how far ahead others are allowed to look, especially in a kind of dickish way?

I'm laughing so hard right now. It isn't even Thanksgiving yet and we are doing this. It is like being a Lions fan and looking forward to the draft. This is what the program has come to. That roster looks solid, but inevitably, we'll underperorm.

It's so frustrating to look at our depth chart and think what our record will likely be.  With the development of Henry and Clark and lots of returning players our D should be pretty stout.  We have plenty of playmakers and a o-line of 4 and 5 star recruits.

Yet with all of that does anyon really expect anything more than an 8 win season?  It's certainly possible if the coaches take a hard and honest look at themselves and develop a coherent offensive philosophy that the players are fit for we could very well contend for a Big Ten Championship.

Unfortunately, none of the evidence we have so far suggests that this will be the case.

August 30th, 2014:  I will cut off all forms of communication with the outside world, hole up in a bunker, and slowly peek my head out late Saturday night to see if the Horror II has descended upon us.  If Al is still in charge of our offense, I might just never come out of that bunker...

If it's looking like we'll be bad again with Borges coming back, does it make sense to RS Morris next year?  If Russ is back in form, which he probably won't be, but still, do we try to save a year of Morris?

I dumped the Dope

November 23rd, 2013 at 7:00 PM ^

I'd like to see Morris get some real game reps next year.  Just so '15 isnt so raw.

When I look at the chart, I see players starting all around starting to be redshirted.  I think that's a nice step forward from now when a ton (literally 2000# of them, LOL) of true freshmen have seen the field.  Really it should be the norm, and hasn't been.  Its the way it should be in my mind, so they can get up to speed with campus, school, the playbook, etc.

There was one play I saw today where (IIRC) the left guard pulled to go push someone else out on the other side of the line.  However the run play went right at the unblocked player that the guard had purposefully left alone.  While I believe the OL did the right thing, I'm not totally sure as the QB and RB seemed in sync.  Those would seem to be youth issues = lack of understanding of the playbook.

People cry like babies when you remove someone when they're not officially gone.

Poole was said to be coming back next year and I haven't seen anything official that says otherwise, so I kept him on here.

I could also predict some transfers or guys not getting a 5th year. But I personally think it's in bad taste.

MGoStrength

November 23rd, 2013 at 4:54 PM ^

I think there are some peices in place to have a good year.  The offensive line clearly has to help our running game and help keep Gardner clean to complete passes.  I think everything else is good enough and I'm hopeful our d-line will continue to improve our pass rush, our linebackers will improve their coverage skills, a healthy Countess and JMFR will be really good, and Peppers will make an immediate impact.  I think with OSU's o-line graduating everybody and being a young team we have a chance to beat them in Columbus.  With MSU's defense graduating that class we have a chance to beat them in E. Lansing.  I'm not too worried about Nebraska (assuming our o-line shows some progression).  We should be able to beat a Colter-less NW team on the road and PSU at home.  But, all this assumes actual progress that is expected.  If Borges doesn't get his head out of his ass, based on what I've seen this year, there is no gurantee any of this expected progress will occur.  And, if it doesn't, then I'm confident in absolutely nothing but another maddening year full of close games and frustrating losses.  So, who knows.  Ask me again if we actually retain Borges or decide to can his ass.
