0T: UM's Best Recruiter?

Submitted by goblueritzy92 on
In the offseason I search for topics to talk about and I was looking at players on Rivals recruited by certain coaches. It seems like Rod Smith is the best recruiter because he has secured Miller, Gardner, and M. Robinson and is recruiting the likes of Henderson and Brennan Clay very well. http://footballrecruiting.rivals.com/viewcoach.asp?Year=2010&Sport=1&Co… Who do you think is the best?

Whoever is convincing receiver after receiver to come to a team that is going to throw the ball 80% of the time because that's what RichRod did at WVU.

I don't know, but I don't think you can fully attribute Miller/MRob to Smith, they both were interested in Michigan long before RR showed up here.

I think that it is more of a cohesive effort and that the guy selling his snake oil in the wizard's hat is the best. That being said, Smith has been doing well this season recruiting and assisstants do make a big difference in recruiting. Also, everyone is recruiting seantrel well so far. He seems open to all takers.

ShockFX, Who was the QB at WVU when RR ran the ball 80 percent of the time? Who is going to be the QB at UM this year? Boom. Done.

So you are saying that with Tate we will throw it more? I think that's what you're saying. And although you may be right, what are you basing it on? WVU had a 4 year starter at QB this past year. We, on the other hand, will be starting a true freshman, and we have a stable of talented and experienced RB's. I'm not sure this is great evidence as to why we will throw more than WVU.

he can still hand it off to running backs and other electron/slot guys. Between Minor, Brown, Shaw, Vincent Smith at running back and I have to believe that more than just Tate will see the field as a quarterback (both out of necessity and intrigue for other guys like Denard), there will be a lot of running. Not 80%, but a lot more than 50%. But the topic wasn't about this year is was about players that are recruits now, and to ShockFX's point, we are continually recruiting wide receivers into a system that WILL be a run-heavy offense once Rodriguez has his pieces in place. So yeah, when these players that are being recruited get out of high school and then get on the field, the offense will probably have moved towards an offense like that Pat White ran at WVU. So yeah, it is pretty amazing that all of those guys are coming here given that.

Why does everyone believe that this will be the RichRod WVU version of the spread? Remember at Clemson with Woody Danzler the split was 50/50 and at Tulane they led the nation in passing with Shaun King. I would think this coming season would be a little heavy on the run with a Freshman QB, but next year when all the WR recruits get here I think the O will be wide open especially with a lot of the RBs graduating. Please stop assuming we know what RR is going to do because you know what happens when you assume!

I say run, run, and run some more. Run the ball into the ground. Then play action and toss it up to Greg Mathews so he can get touchdowns and go to the NFL.

You guys may all be smarter than me, but I have a hard time believing these kids, with many offers, are coming here to block in an 80% running offense. I realize that RR's offense ran the ball a lot at WVU, but I don't believe that means that we'll be run crazy. If I'm wrong and RR is lying to these kids, I suppose they'll transfer after a season or two. I think we're picking up the "traditional" Michigan WR because RR intends on using them. FWIW

I was being sarcastic people. I think that we will have a 55% run - 45% pass split. I was joking about recruiting all the receivers because a year ago people were crying that we wouldn't be able to recruit top notch WRs anymore because RR ran the ball 80% of the time. Again, I WAS BEING SARCASTIC WITH THE 80% comment.

Yeah, I got it when you said it, Shock. I figured you were rounding up by fives. So instead of saying 75% of the times like any rational thinking M fan would, you kicked it up a notch (BAM!) I am still gonna pass you to the next grade buddy. *Stamps no fail on Shock's post*

My wife, a Florida graduate and die-hard Gator fan, always mocked me with her consistently correct predictions of our offense on every play. Off-tackle left, up-the-middle...then possibly a pass...or off-tackle left again. What killed me, was that she was way too correct. But despite our unimaginative, often effective yet predictable, run-dominated offense, somehow we were able to bring in some incredible receivers who kicked ass at Michigan and later in the NFL. Long story short, I don't see the point on the utility of premier receivers in this offense. It seems they will have the opportunity to be stars if they are star-worthy.

I think the fact that a die-hard Gator fan calling us predictable is also pretty funny. Not because of their play calling, but because I can only remember playing Florida twice and we beat them both times. Once pretty soundly, Heisman winner and all. I guess it doesn't matter if you're predictable if they can't stop you.
