One Frame At A Time: 2022 Season GIF Tournament - Round 2
Welcome to Round 2 of our fun little tournament. I'm glad everyone is enjoying this as much as I am! After some fierce competition, half of our gifs are gone and the very best are moving on to the round of 32. See the results of Round 1, placed in arbitrarily named regions, below:
A few things to address here: yes, I did make this bracket in Excel. I am proud of it. All the websites that can create a bracket for you know their target audience and make you pay to create a bracket larger than 32 teams. Thanks, internet.
Also, it seems we have a few different storylines. Some big upsets happened, most of them due to poor seeding. I think we have to blame that on the committee. Who put this bracket together anyway? Was this a part of Matt Weiss' TCU gameplan or something? Sheesh.
You may notice we've had a UCMB-style upending of a #1 seed. Any OSU game GIF is going to get a lot of love, but overthrowing one of Blake's best plays on the year against MSU was surprising. But I suppose unless you're Hab, you only get one vote. Despite some of the scores looking like the NCAA Women's bracket, we did have some very close matchups. After appearing out of the competition, 4-seed Karma staged a comeback and gained a late lead over 13-seed Look At The Bowling Ball Get Down The Lane. Similarly, in the Blake Corum NIL Thanksgiving Turkey Region, we had General JJ outmaneuvered by a close-up of Harbaugh's face. It took a late push, but the ref cam footage struck late and said "cya" to JJ.
Finally, despite having many of his greatest plays upset, Blake's Stretch Armstrong pulled it out on a buzzer beater from half court over our only postgame GIF. Thank you to everyone who participated in that specific poll. You helped determine a definite winner after staying tied for most of the week. Just like Corum, Stretch Armstrong used every inch of effort to reach in for the score it needed to pull it out in the end. He'll face the aforementioned Karma in the next round.
Some great matchups to look forward to in this post too! We've got the spiderman meme topping out the Tunnel region, JJ vs. Jake, Harbaugh's open mouth vs. Paul Bunyan, and a 10 vs. 15 matchup that pits a crucial OSU TD against a punt return TD. I'm excited to see how this all plays out! We'll give Round 2 another week before we get into Sweet Sixteen territory. As before, click on the link on "vs." between the GIFs to vote. Enjoy!

I was surprised too by the decisive upset of that #1 seeded Corum gif. I saw the wide margin after casting my vote in that matchup yesterday (I voted for Corum); that was the one result that surprised me the most.

rob is there a way to get my pictures to show? Not sure what I'm doing wrong there. Usually don't have any problem with embeds or links. Or, if we can't get them to work, could you maybe take the results from my above comment and put them into the OP?
January 27th, 2023 at 10:25 PM ^
Sorry, I hadn't been on MGoBlog since mid-afternoon and just saw your request minutes ago.
I wish I could help you to get your pics to show, but I'm not seeing anything here or on my mod page.
I'm going to try to copy-and-paste the results but my guess, based on past experiences, is that it won't format correctly and will be one continuous string of numbers and sentences.
edit @10:41pm: I tried that for the first of the four brackets and got a response of "something something file limit exceeded..." so in the interest of NOT ruining your diary OP, I think I'll leave everything as is.
January 30th, 2023 at 8:37 AM ^
That's fine, thanks for trying! I'll figure out what I'm doing wrong in time for a sweet 16 bracket.

What are the betting lines on each of these gifs? It would've been fun to have a bracket challenge like the NCAA tourney.
For my money, I've got a final matchup between:
#1 seed "Speed Kills" from the Ben Herbert X-Factor Region
vs.
#1 seed "Mike Sainristil, AKA Fat Ann Arbor Squirrel" from the Santa Ono North Pole Region
My dark horse/cinderella candidate is #13 seeded "This Is The Internet. I Am Having Fun" from the Blake Corum NIL Thanksgiving Turkey Region.

Thanks for taking us back through a truly memorable season. This is such a great feature. Your effort is most appreciated.

The only region with which I take serious contention, based on this week's votes, is the Dangerous Tunnel Region. Specifically, it's that same play matched up against one another, the Donovan Edwards run against Ohio State, just from different angles. I don't understand why the replay angle is winning. My memory of the moment is of the live-action angle––not being shown it and explained it 30 seconds later. Watching Donovan Edwards burst into the open-field and gallop away is infinitely better when you don't know it's about to happen.
January 28th, 2023 at 9:09 AM ^
Yeah, at first I thought that was between the two Edwards TD runs, but after watching again I saw it was the same play. Weird... But weird fits well for this season.
January 30th, 2023 at 10:19 AM ^
yeah I didn't intend to have two gifs of the same play like that. I also didn't vet them to make sure this type of matchup couldn't happen. To be fair, it did take a 1 losing to a 16 for this to happen. So there's that.
Honestly I think that region is the easiest one. Not a clear winner there with the 1 seed gone, the weird duplicate matchup, and close scores for most of the 1st round. 2 seed Yeah, Well, So Did Purdue might just run away with it but it should be a fairly easy path.
January 28th, 2023 at 9:11 AM ^
I honestly don't know how Speed Kills doesn't win this whole thing by a mile. When I voted just now, it was up 33-1 - and I expect the same thing to happen in the Championship Game/Vote/Tally/Whatever...
January 29th, 2023 at 2:53 AM ^
I'm not saying Speed Kills won't win, but right now it's going up against a pass play against Hawaii (YTH) that didn't even score a TD. That is a very, very weak 8 seed.
Clearly, Speed Kills got a solid region.
January 30th, 2023 at 10:27 AM ^
It certainly has the easiest path of the remaining 1 seeds. The only gif that held its first round opponent to single digits is 7-seed Leader. Best. which is currently losing to the 2 seed in this round of voting. I really don't see anything standing it its way until the final four.
January 28th, 2023 at 4:13 PM ^
these are so fun - THANKS
January 30th, 2023 at 9:42 AM ^
I've posted the brackets successfully here.
January 30th, 2023 at 9:34 PM ^
Surprise, surprise, surprise: "Ground Assault" and "Look at That Hole Pt Dos" (two different angles of the same play but keep in mind only Ground Assault shows the end result of that play: the TD vs ohio state) were tied prior to me casting my vote.
Other than that, the only other close race involves the Michael Barrett "Those Who Stay" gif. I can't imagine daring to vote against Michael Barrett, but it appears that some voters here are quite reckless in their choices.
February 2nd, 2023 at 1:17 PM ^
and it's still tied. About to queue up the rest of the board to see if they can help us decide between the clear winner and the replay...
