Devin Gardner 2012 Highlights

Submitted by Thorin on

OK, I lied. These aren't really Gardner highlights as much as they are Gardner/Gallon/Roundtree/Denard highlights or Offensive Highlights In Which Gardner Touches The Ball. I wanted to split up the highlights so they wouldn't be as long as last year's. If you think it's too short, that's probably because I couldn't include the Nebraska game after Denard got injured, the second half at OSU or the Big Ten Championship.

I'm excited to see what he can do with an entire offseason as the #1 QB...I think we're going to see him grow just as much mentally as we see him get better physically.

He was good last year, I expect he'll be great...I wouldn't be shocked if he was spactacular.

The thing I noticed most was the difference in pass rush/pass blocking between Minnesota, NW, and Iowa vs Ohio and South Carolina. Captain Obvious, I know, but Devin's MUCH better at improvising than Denard was. Devin rolls out and keeps looking downfield while Denard spent the last two seasons trying to find a lot of time to eventually make a bad throw. I really hope the offense is trading off Denard's big designed runs for Devin's big pass plays. Denard had pass plays of 40+ yards in 3/8 starts while Devin had one in 4/5 starts.

Gardner throws a very 'catchable ball'.  Some of his throws were so accurate and pretty, that it leads me to think that he has a lot of unrealized potential and ultimately will end up being a very accurate thrower.  He just needs more time under center.  That long out vs. NW was stunning.  IMO he will be drafted on the first day in the NFL, hopefully in two years.

BTW a lot of people rip on Borges and the way that he handles the offense.  Some of that may be warranted, especially when he sometimes goes in to a play calling shell for some reason... but he has done a wonderful job with Gardner.  It is obvious that Devin has bought in and worked hard on his mechanics and decision making.  He looks a whole lot better than he did in the spring game in 11.

DG can pass.  Gallon, Dileo and Funchess make some grabs.  If we get Darbora to step up these guys can have a great season on the passing.  if we can get a RB this team can actually win the BIG GAMES.  I feel good about having an arm and legs like this!

...I realized how much I STILL take Denard for granted. The 3rd or 4th play in the video -- Gardner gets through the line and runs for about 18 yards -- and all I'm thinking is "Man...why didn't he take it all the way?"

It's going to be an adjustment, but I'm excited for the Gardner era. He was put in a tough spot and kept the season from being a disaster.
