CC: THE_KNOWLEDGE or not, Harbaugh to Michigan is a done deal

Submitted by Communist Football on

Comrades,

The death of Communist Football in Ann Arbor, at the hands of fascist manball counter-revolutionaries, has kept me in hiding. I know many of you have been waiting for THE_KNOWLEDGE to weigh in on the coaching search. However, my crack intelligence analysts are convinced that Harbaugh to Michigan is a done deal, based on publicly available information. Here is why:

1. Lloyd Carr's pro-Harbaugh comments. As you know, Lloyd Carr has stated: "Everyone has an opinion, and I am no different. If I had a choice, I would choose Jim Harbaugh. But it will be Jim Hackett's decision, and that is as it should be." This has been interpreted by the capitalist media as simply Carr expressing his opinion. It is much more than that. Carr, being as close as he is to the Athletic Department, would not express his opinion if it was inconsistent with that of Hackett, because doing so would undermine Hackett's search process. You can be sure that Hackett would be pissed if Carr was pushing Hackett to make a different decision than one Hackett would make anyway. In addition, Carr is almost certain to have inside information as to Harbaugh's interest in the job; he wouldn't advocate for Harbaugh unless he knew that Harbaugh was interested.

2. The collapse of the Vegas betting line. The Vegas Harbaugh bet collapsing from 8-1 to 2-1, and then being pulled off the table, is not merely a sign of decadent western gamblers, but of inside information. Jeff Moss of DetroitSportsRag reached out to Sportsbook.ag, and found out something very interesting:

Hi there….our limits for this market were $2k max win per bet. Its a volatile high risk market where the public may know more than us. It was a novelty bet so none of the bets were there sizable, it was the amount of bets that got our attention as it didn’t matter how low we went, they just kept coming in… We’ve been researching it more and more we can’t explain the action other then (sic) someone might know more about his coaching situation than us. We might consider opening it up again, but at this point it’s off the board.

There was a sudden, and massive, bet on Harbaugh coming to Michigan. In the stock market, such surges are frequently, though not always, the result of inside information.

3. Harbaugh has not quashed the Michigan rumors. Harbaugh was quick to shoot down rumors that he would go to Michigan under fascist AD Dave Brandon. That has clearly not happened in this case. Harbaugh genuinely loves his alma mater, and has zero incentive to harm his relationship with his former teammates and coaches by stringing Michigan along.

4. Hackett has told players that the search will likely be over after Christmas break. The NFL regular-season schedule ends on December 28. The 49ers could make the playoffs, throwing a wrench in this schedule, but Hackett's confidence in that timeline is telling.

5. Everything else we already know. The alienation of Harbaugh at San Francisco; the fact that Hackett as an interim AD has more flexibility to grant Harbaugh broad powers over the football program; the fact that several insiders have described Hackett as a longer-term hire; the fact that Harbaugh is objectively the best qualified candidate by a country kilometer; that Stephen Ross is a strong backer of Harbaugh coming to Michigan.

Even at 2:1 odds, decadent capitalists ought to take the bet that Harbaugh is coming to Michigan. The facts above make it extremely unlikely that any other outcome will take place.

Harbaugh's appointment would, of course, mean the end of Communist Football in Ann Arbor for the foreseeable future. But the arc of football is long, and it bends toward the read-option

Isn't there a little known codicil in the University of Michigan constitution which gives the AD unlimited power to preserve order in time of campus emergency, to wit the legal right to conscript a former Michigan QB to be the Head Coach?  If some mgolawyer can confirm that, then the discussion and waiting is over.  JH is our new HC!!!

Let's think this through logically.

If Schiano was #1 on their list, it'd be a done deal and they'd have announced the hire, since he is unemployed and there would be no reason whatsoever to wait to make the announcement.

If Harbaugh had in fact turned them down and the job had been offered to Schiano, the same scenario applies. There'd be no reason to wait to make the announcement.

So they clearly have candidates ahead of Schiano, and those candidates have not turned the job down, since we are in fact still waiting.

Now, what are we waiting for? Here are the only possibilities that make sense:

1. End of NFL seasons; and/or,

2. End of bowl season.

College coaches who haven't made a bowl would already be free to take the offer, so they have to be eliminated from consideration.

Mid-major coaches have already concluded their seasons and there'd be no need for them to wait for small time bowls, if any, to make an announcement. It isn't going to be someone from a mid-major.

Schiano has no team in the NFL, and has no team in a bowl. Thus, he is clearly behind others on the list assuming a handshake deal hasn't been done already.

This leads me to believe that while Schiano may be a Plan B, C or D, he's not a part of plan A. I suspect that Hackett is smart enough not to have only one Plan A candidate like JH.

The logical conclusion is that we are waiting to hear from candidates leading successful college programs or who are in the NFL.

I hope your time in Novysibersk was productive.

Substantively, I hope you are right. I am convinced that Harbaugh has not shot us down, and that he is at least weighing the option. I can imagine that saying no to Michigan when Michigan makes a major push in good faith would be an incredibly hard thing for him to do.

However, I also don't think it's a fait accompli. If so, I think there wouldn't be so much noise from the NFL types. My guess is that he's weighing both options, and the NFL types simply don't take the return-to-college scenario seriously because, historically speaking, NFL coaches only return to college when they lack NFL options.

In the end, I'd say there's about a 40% chance Harbaugh comes to Michigan. Significant, but not quite 50/50. I hope that's an overly safe estimation, as he would be a great coach.

If he doesn't come, I sure hope we have some decidedly non-Schiano options still on the board.

Heres the latest....Jim Harbaugh to Michigan reps that he is more interested in staying in the NFL...However, he told them his brother John wants the job and will accept it if offered!!!  I will take it!! Mattison will still be DC...I think this is great news, lets watch this develop. Baltimore Ravens are still on the fringe for playoffs, San Fran are all but out, which would give J. Harbaugh an early out if he wanted the Michigan job.....he doesnt. He wants to Oakland Raiders job.    John Harbaugh wants the Michigan job!!!

Harbaugh was in the conversation in 08. And they went after him hard after the RR debacle, when he turned them down flat. Now, the university is going after him yet again. It makes UM look desperate, and the whole thing is getting embarrassing. It reminds me of the nerd asking the popular girl to the prom over and over again. And if they hire that putz Schiano, I will throw up.

What is the basis for saying Jim Harbaugh turned down Michigan after Rich Rod was fired?  Like a lot of people, I *assumed* that Brandon must have offered the job to JH and Les Miles, but then settled on Hoke.  This is what a normal, reasonable, intelligent person would have done.  But we've learned since then that Dave Brandon is a truly "special" guy!  Various reports now have it that Brandon never offered the job to Harbaugh or Miles-- that Hoke was his choice from the get-go.  Knowing what we've learned about Brandon, it now makes perfect sense that he  wanted Hoke over the others.

This is gonna drive us all crazy if this lasts for a month!  Schiano, I pray he isn't coming.  At certain points in this blog I got super happy cause Harbaugh would be like a dream coming true.  And of course the NFL insiders are saying he isn't interested!  What else are they going to say, "yeah screw the 49ers, I am going to Mich" noopppee!  So where does this leave all of us GO BLUE nut jobs....well I for one think that if it was already a done deal someone in the KNOW such as a reporter on some level would have heard something.  So the he said she said crap on campus I just can't put any stock in it.  I know someone WAY up on the totem pole, and he/she won't say a word to his/hers family let a alone me....and I am close to them.  So wake me up when this is all over cause I can't take anymore of this BS!

IIRC, you were not on the Harbaugh train last time around.  I see that - like Deng Xiaoping - you have now embraced that which is successful.

Comrade jmblue, your memory has not failed you. I remain a committed Communist, and would be very pleased to install a fellow-traveler like Dan Mullen in Ann Arbor.

Short of that, however, as the wise Mr. Deng once said, "it doesn't matter whether a cat is white or black, as long as it catches mice."

I'm in full agreement with The Knowledge here. Harbaugh is already inked, and we are just waiting the days until he comes here. You know he is already excited as hell about it.

I agree that Harbaugh is a done deal, but for a different reason: timing. If we weren't getting Harbaugh, we would have a coach already. Simple as that. Someone like Mora, for example, would've been announced last week. He'd be using this time to assemble his staff and, more importantly, to get a big, big headstart in recruiting. This is why schools like Florida and Nebraska already have new coaches. Point is this: why would we chance valuable time on anyone but a marquee hire? Swim lanes, guys...
