Big Ten Recruiting Class Rankings 12-5-10

By Tim — December 5th, 2010 at 6:43 PM — 18 comments

Action since last rankings:

11-18-10 Illinois gains commitment from Tyler Marcordes.
11-29-10 Indiana loses commitment from CJ Robbins. Penn State gains commitment from Allen Robinson. Notre Dame gains commitment from Cam McDaniel.
11-30-10 Wisconsin loses commitment from Makinton Dorleant.
12-2-10 Notre Dame gains commitment from Everett Golson.
12-5-10 Wisconsin gains commitment from Melvin Gordon. Michigan loses commitment from Kevin Sousa.

Rivals and Scout have updated their rankings over the past couple weeks, so there are some shakeups in there.

Big Ten+ Recruiting Class Rankings
Rank School # Commits Rivals Avg Scout Avg ESPN Avg
1 Ohio State 18 5.76 3.78 79.17
2 Notre Dame 18 5.69 3.50 78.89
3 Nebraska 17 5.71 3.41 78.75*
4 Michigan State 16 5.65 3.25 76.75
5 Wisconsin 21 5.60 2.86 72.19
6 Michigan 13 5.68 3.38 78.38
7 Indiana 20 5.54 2.70 75.25
8 Iowa 15 5.59 2.93 76.53
9 Northwestern 11 5.55 2.73 77.09
10 Minnesota 15 5.53 2.60 73.87
11 Illinois 18 5.44 2.56 71.61
12 Penn State 7 5.47 2.71 71.14
13 Purdue 10 5.47 2.10 72.60

Rivals rankings are on the "RR" scale, which is on a scale from about 5 to about 6.1. Unrated prospects are given a 5.1 rating, on par with the worst of any Big Ten commit last year. Scout is on the 5-star system (unranked players earn star), and ESPN uses grades out of 100 (unranked is 40 or 45). Full data after the jump.

In a move that's been a couple weeks in the waiting, the Badgers grab in-state back Melvin Gordon. Still waiting on ESPN ratings for three of their commits.

Wolverines lose Kevin Sousa to Wake Forest. His departure doesn't have much of an effect on the averages, but with so many fewer commits than Wisconsin, I think it's fair to drop Michigan past the Badgers. The averages are still high enough to keep them ahead of Indiana, IME.

#7 Indiana - 20 Commits
Name Position State Rivals Scout ESPN

The firing of Bill Lynch has its first casualty, as CJ Robbins decommits. He has very little effect on Indiana's averages.

The local rivals guy has something he doesn't like about Golson, espn and scout have much higher opinions of him.  Won the state championship on a throw against Clowney, glad ND had space to take him

weren't we above

Sparty last week? With only 3 more recruits than us and M averages higher we could be above them? Maybe we're not counting Dee's full rankings because of his tenuous commitment?

If you're coming on a rival

If you're coming on a rival school's message board for pretty much the sole purpose of seeking out people talking about MSU, and calling them out for it, maybe you shouldn't be the one accusing people of obsession.

Just sayin'

I read Tim's post every single week.

I found it doing a search on recruting - and thus this board.

I find it a fine collection of information on the recruiting landscape in our conference. Just thought it was very amusing "why did Sparty pass us, wha. Dee Hart, wha..."

I have also read many other posts on the board, and respect Magnus' contribution more than most. As a group you do amuse me though. So many people demanding Brandon come out with a decision all because the MSM all are speculating on RR's job security. Do you really want your AD to answer to the same MSM that you love to trash (and rightfully so).

For Magnus:

I won't be popping in to check on your winningest football team on January 1. I wish your team the best running and passing against the SEC. I will be skipping that game for a game you should be adding to your agenda.

The averages are virtually

The averages are virtually even, and with State's 3 additional commits, I think their class is better. Wisconsin's is better mostly on the basis of volume of commits.

This has nothing to do with

This has nothing to do with Hart's waffling?  I was almost surprised to see him on the list.

Also, your link to the previous ranking doesn't work.

PSU

I just noticed how small/poor PSU's class is.  Do they just not have many players leaving or is baseless fear that JoePa may not coach another four years keeping recruits away.  If that is the case, they need to extend JoePa's contract.  No seriously, what is up at Penn State?

I think the "trouble" was

I think the "trouble" was already covered on the board a while ago.  I haven't seen anything about him being ineligible
