WTKA Roundtable 8/25/2022: Within the Last 40 Years Comment Count

Santa Shirts in store: Merch drop!

Things discussed:

  • Salute to Carol Hutchins. She surprised us all, and deserved to. Immediate situation isn't a concern. The program's long-term health is fantastic, and she built that. Women's sports at Michigan are fantastic, and she built them. She became the winningest coach in Michigan athletics history when I was in college in the early 2000s. Her name is up there with Yost. Who are we to have opinions on when she retires?
  • August football
  • Financial windfall from conference, paying the refs? Brian: will be the same people. Seth: not long-term. It's not a profession right now but a lifestyle, so you're working out of a tiny pool.
  • Want to see honest UFRs of their officiating, like MLB now provides.
  • Fall camp: situation sounds like exactly what we thought it was.
  • Eyabi Anoma: Further scouting.
  • TJ Guy: OLB vs DE. Can he crash?
  • We won't know if they can stop the run until Iowa because nobody is going to run until UConn.
  • NIL players' collective: 18% off the top seems too high for that to be a good deal.

Seth and Craig were on early here to talk about Hutch. You can watch the video here:

Well this reminds me of the situation with Whistlehead Grunkthump of the 1925 Fort Wayne Barons. And of course he was competing against Grover Cleveland for the starting coal miner job, and everyone knows how that went.

"Want to see honest UFRs of their officiating, like MLB now provides."

Given the fact of Angel Hernandez, baseball may have honest UFR's but they do not do anything with them.

How much does MGoBlog make off of the board generated content/clicks? /s

People keep complaining about their cut. A company has found a good way to collect money for the players, seems to work with compliance at the schools, and provides the forum/payment collection. Assuming the players are on payroll, then there is taxes involved as well... Shame on them for trying to make money for providing a service.

I think that he was trying to show some of the likely costs of providing the service and some of the benefits to the donors.  I also think it was implied that he thinks 18% is reasonable in that calculation.

Interestingly, if the company was simply a pass-through of pretty much all of the funds, without any expenditures on value-adds like the message board and such, there would be a better argument that this is the improper type of "NIL" that Harbaugh and the University oppose - just pay for play.  I know that is what everybody seems to want, but that is not how the program operates at this point.

I thought I knew all of the inside jokes here, but what is the meaning behind "Santa School" and "Santa Comin"?  My older (but not old) man brain didn't catch the references.

I haven't listened yet so not sure what he said but I get tired of a lot of the ref talk too. I visit post game basketball threads a lot less often here because there's usually way too much ref bitching, even though some of it is legit. It's just tiresome. The worst is when the team wins comfortably and still like half the comments are about the refs. Maybe the refs did suck, but we won! Why worry so much about that?
