WTKA Roundtable 7/8/2021: No More Ululating Comment Count

Seth July 8th, 2021 at 12:01 PM

Things discussed:

  • Craig tells a story about the one guy who could defend Adrian Dantley, Wayman Britt.
  • Caleb Houstan’s non three pointer game.
  • Big Ten Hoops-around: Is Michigan the favorite? Purdue has a ceiling of Williams, Ohio State lost Washington, Maryland got a PG and a C but lost their Ws.
  • The Wisconsin locker room, and what the hell, we just roll through the whole Big Ten.
  • Justice Finkley: Sam says Michigan got him up for their in-person evaluations and saw a Carlo Kemp not a Matt Judon, and shared that with Finkley, who wants to be an edge. We roundtable whether they should have taken him anyway.
  • In the break we talk about gefilte fish.
  • Shoelace and NIL. I was trying to build up to a point about NIL and then the guys started talking about giving Peppers love life advice and I lost my connection. My point though was that there are two NILs: paying the players through the loophole, and also there are all kinds of opportunities for players who aren’t major sport athletes, e.g. Naz or a volleyball player who has thoughts about videogames.

Craig’s Houstan take is pretty cringeworthy. Has he looked at the montverde roster and who they play? Houstan has plenty of tape against higher level comp than Puerto Rico, Senegal and Lithuania, where he is shooting just fine. He was 2/4 from 3 against Puerto Rico in the 3rd game. He will be fine shooting in the big ten lol.

Sure hope you are right. His mechanics look good to me and he shoots with little seeming effort.

However, in four games in the tournament he is now 7-33 from 3 or 21.2% [3-11, 1-10, 1-8, 2-4.] He is 14-29 from 2. Hopefully, this is just a blip, an anomaly. He did force some shots in the Lithuania game.

I watched three of the four games (missed Senegal, but hope to get back to it) and I have been mostly impressed. He has 11 steals and his defense looks pretty good. I think he will be a good passer. He handles the ball well for a 6' 8" guy. He has been mostly unselfish on a team where I see some guard play that seems, now and again, less than team oriented.  As he gets stronger I see him as an asset on the boards.

I accept other opinions.

I would have loved to hear more in depth everyone’s thoughts on NIL, how it is now, how it works now, how we see it changing rules wise in the future, how it effects the game, and how Michigan is currently asking as compared and where we think they will go with it. Would love to hear all of your opinions on that. Either podcast or an article.

Regarding Finkley, I would be upset if Michigan was not being completely transparent with recruits.  So if MacDonald knows Finkely wants to be an edge guy, looks at him and doesn’t think he’ll be able to play on the edge in his scheme, he should be upfront about it.  If he said unequivocally that edge is out of the question, that would be dumb but my understanding of how this went down leaves me feeling good about how Michigan treats its recruits.

And this isn’t just moral high ground.  Do we want a reputation as a school that pulls the rug out from under recruits once they get to campus?

I don't like to think of ethical behavior as "high ground", like its sole purpose is to gain something from it.  I'd prefer we do the right thing because it's the right fucking thing, not so we can look down on others or gain some sort of advantage.  But I get your point. I just, let’s please stop using that phrase.

Anyway.  Unfortunately, while some recruits appreciate honesty, I've never seen a program really suffer because of dishonesty.  Especially these days (*glares at the NCAA*).

Dantley was a freshman against sophomore Wayman Britt, he had averaged at least 18 a game that season on a real solid Notre Dame team that ended UCLA's 88 game winning streak. One of the few times, I pulled for Notre Dame.

In a second round tournament game, Wayman Britt got in his grill early and never got out. Dantley looked like he wanted to cry.

Two years later Dantley lit it up for over 30 against Britt and Michigan team that made it to the finals only to lose for the third time to undefeated Indiana.

Player of the year ... I think ... Scott May in a subsequent interview graciously said that he was glad to be done playing against Wayman Britt.

More impressive to me than the job he did on those guys was the fact that he defended a 6'11" Hughes twin on multiple occasions. Neither of those guys really ever got much done on us.

I'm pretty sure Wayman averaged 10 pts a game over his career.

Grote was a good guy, he would play pickup all around town and did a good job of keeping things fun. The same year he blasted Bruce Parkinson in the face with his forehead defending a pick and roll, he let me live on a play where I brought it down the baseline for a layup. I went up thinking, Here is where I get it in the ear". I came pretty close to putting it into the bottom of the rim from thinking about it.

I checked on him going down to the other end, he gave me a look that said, "I let you live", I gave him a look that said, "I know."

Massive thrill.

I'm not too worried.

In fact, I think Craig is right - Houstan has had a tough tournament from 3 pt land. He has the form and mechanics, so I am not terribly worried.

Duncan Robinson had cold stretches too: it happens

The best part to me is, even if his shot isn't falling, he is finding other ways to contribute. I know there was some concerns with his defense, but he has performed extremely well on that end of things.

edit: 25 pts in the quarterfinals versus Spain, but 1/7 from 3 point range
