WTKA Roundtable 6/17/2021: Only a Mirage on the Horizon Comment Count

Seth June 17th, 2021 at 10:46 AM

Things discussed before the show:

  • Seth gets on early and Sam talks about Walter Nolen. Seth puts all this film into an If it Happens folder.
    image
  • Michigan has to blow the South out of the water in NIL to compete with the South.

Anderson thing discussed:

  • Good to hear the voices of the survivors.
  • Wilmer-Hale report is so damning it’s hard to believe there needs to be more.
  • Taking this to the Attorney General’s office sounds like a waste of time and a PR trap because we’re at the point where the plaintiffs and the university have to decide on a number, which is not what we’re really interested in.
  • We want to focus on how we change the structures of power at the university so that we don’t have these institutional failures again.

Other things discussed:

  • Daylen Baldwin scout: more Darboh but Fast or Junior Hemingway but not as leapy than Nico Collins or Devin Funchess, blocking really sticks out on film, Michigan needed another Cornelius Johnson since everybody else on the roster is #SpeedinSpace.
  • Hoops recruiting: Do you take a Dug in hand or wait on a situation where two 5-stars deciding a month later are both down to UNC or Michigan? Hmmm.
  • Bigs recruiting: we’re not even going to consider Jalen Duren, and Lively for whatever reason is trending away, but if Donovan Clingan chooses hometown UConn over being Hunter Dickinson 2.0 he didn’t decide based on fit.
  • NIL: Recruits should use the Charity Bowl as the most scientific understanding of how each school’s fanbases will spend money once they can aim their respective money cannons at recruits, though there’s a little bit of nuance, e.g. you probably won’t make more at Slippery Rock than 13 Big Ten schools.

The line in the sand has gone up way high, but I didn’t watch any Jalen Duren

I know why you had to change the “M” in the Roundtable graphic, but it makes me think of Maryland. That is bad. A pox on the UofM trademark police.

Does anyone know (or perhaps have they said on the show) if Craig Ross is just taking a break?  It doesn't seem like he's been on for the 2-3 weeks.

Thanks, Pete, I am honored [Whether you like my presence or not.] that you noticed.

I am taking a short break in Kona but plan to be back in July. I am having some physical issues (nothing life threatening) and the 3 AM start time (while I have done it many times in the past) was just too much this time around.

Craig, I know you love to self deprecate but you are well lived by your fellow Michigan fans.

If I was the program director at WTKA the full round table would be a year long feature but you would also have an hour a week to kick it with Sam one on one.  Your appearances last year were wonderful and I miss them dearly

Thanks to both of you. Truly, I have been blessed to have the opportunity to jibber-jabber on the radio. It is often hard to know how listeners perceive it. I do know this, and I believe it sincerely, that most of the people who post here could do as well or better than I do.

It strikes me that the Michigan money cannon is more interested in donating to charity than 19 year olds.  I predict NIL will not be a big help for Michigan and in fact could be quite the opposite.

I also think that is a possibility and there are certainly other ways it might shake out so that the changes will not prove helpful to Michigan. We just need to wait and see how it comes out. (But we shouldn't count those chickens.)

I deeply feel for all the victims and i hate that I have to preface that but.......are we really doing the “survivors” thing?  There victims of a sexual predator.  That means more than enough.  Throwing a word like survivors out actually cheapens there experience in ones own attempt to virtue signal.  The truth is bad enough.

You are welcome to use, and should feel comfortable using, either term. Allow me to explain why I use "survivor." One is my wife is a community psychologist who works primarily with kids, a lot of whom have been through abuse, sexual or otherwise. So she's on me to use the right term for the reasons she does in her job: one word gives the person agency and the other doesn't.

Also her friends and co-workers are always listening or their husbands are listening to me on air ready to report me if I screw up something they are trained not to screw up. One day I'd like to sic an army to report on her performance on talking Michigan football, but I'm not privy to her client sessions.

The other reason is I'm media. When we talk about PC language and whatnot, mostly these are recommendations for media not the general public. They're best practices. Also it's 30 or 40 years since these took place, which means Survivor is more accurate than Victim.

Neither of these, I'm guessing, apply to you. So use whatever you want.
