WTKA Roundtable 5/16/2019: Oats or Howard Comment Count

Seth May 16th, 2019 at 2:56 PM

Things discussed:

  • Beilein, The Myth: He didn't get the early NBA guys but he's incredible at talent evaluation.
  • Other than one-and-done factories nobody has put more guys in the league. Hardaway, Burke, Caris…
  • What's "Proving It" at Cleveland? Getting run in the 1st round as an 8th seed. Cleveland has the #5 pick and crap.
  • Beilein's reasoning: he's 66, coming off heart surgery, working harder than he ever has to in the season
  • Our picks: Craig says there's some Billy Donovan stories out there.
  • Bagging and breaking the rules: Beilein was literally the only guy following the verbal offer rule.
  • Donovan: The talk in coaching circles is Donovan cheated to get established then stopped doing it because he was there. Before/after Anthony Grant.
  • Craig: Plenty of guys who were assistants to head coaches: Frieder, Fisher, Izzo, Orr, etc.
  • Sam: If you're going after Nate Oats, you have to offer him the job. He ain't interviewing. "You can call him. You can get Nate."
  • Nate's not going to be on a board. Brian: "That means he's smart. I like that."
  • Juwan Howard? Got a nephew who's a five-star. Can recruit, is going to be a head coach soon.
  • Michigan: Juwan would be the exception to no-assistants rule. Gotta outbid the Cavs to keep Yaklich, give him some long-term security.
  • Craig's list: Oats, Howard, Yak

I've either got to start sucking a little more (which would have been fine) or I've got to follow these guys.

I'm coming around to Howard although he wouldn't be my first choice.  He seems well respected in NBA circles.  If he can recruit, I could see it working.   That being said, most of the news about the coaching search is depressing.

It would only work for one of us MGoBlog schmoos.

There are a lot of former NBA guys in CBB, plus a lot of college coaches with proven track records.

Elite recruits are going to hear from them all.

Howard's voice will be just one of many.

People keep saying they changed the game but that was 20+ years ago.  Larry Johnson and the UNLV Running Rebels also changed basketball and nobody would care if he came calling.

Howard would likely be able to get into a lot of recruits' homes, but only UM fans think the third most prominent guy from a team best known for not winning anything, calling a timeout they didn't have, then having that era erased because of cheating is some feather in your cap.

Only Michigan would fuck up a coaching search this badly.

The stage was set for this when Warde was hired.

Every single program Michigan considers a peer or rival doesn't have the type of sprint UM hoops just had and then bungle a coaching search this poorly.

MSU, Purdue, Syracuse, etc. etc. don't or wouldn't fuck it up this badly.

The administration loves the smell of their own god damn farts so much, they simply believe they are the smartest people in the room and things will happen because it is Michigan.

Once the fuck up they hire pisses away the progress made over the last decade and misses the Big Dance 3 years in a row, it will be fun seeing what bumble fuck is hired to further the decent to Brian Ellerbe land again.

I also just needed to vent.

Tell you what, if Warde surprises everyone and doesn't fuck it up, the Mods can delete my account.

But I guarantee Warde hires a Hoke equivalent.  Guarantee it.

Warde, the AD, and the administration don't give a shit about what anyone thinks - they will still get butts in the seats, but more importantly, they will still get the B1G channel money, and booster cash, and on and on.

They don't want to pay or put in the effort to get a grand slam hire.  Warde will hire that Providence chuckle fuck or Moser and smile and laugh at the hate he gets while he cashes his $700k/year paychecks.

"they will still get butts in the seats"

Actually, that's absolutely not true about Michigan basketball, which has historically had difficulty filling Crisler on a regular, every-game basis. If the next coach is a dud, attendance will revert back to what it was like during Ellerbe and Amaker.

I can say that with 100% certainty that the people who are already complaining about this hire would deride literally anyone they signed as coach.  Steve Kerr could be named as the next HC and you'd claim they overpaid for a guy who will just go back to the NBA in 2 years.

Stop hyperventilating about Warde. He bungled Beilein's contract extension a bit by not having a buy out. That still wouldn't have kept JB here and would have left us with the same shitty timing for a coaching search. No matter what he's 100x better than Brandon.

He bungled Beilein's extension by not forcing Beilein to sign a contract he wouldn't accept.

I get it. People are mad. But Beilein didn't want a big buyout. He hated having to pay WVU their buyout. He left money on the table to avoid one here. Surely Warde wanted to put in a buyout, but he had zero leverage.

Yeah, this whole buyout complaint is totally due to Brian mentioning it wasn't there and people just taking his outrage as gospel.

Beilein didn't want one.  He was very public about disliking them.  He also had just come off the second title game appearance in his tenure at Michigan.  All it is is money anyway, and both the Cavs and UM have it to burn.  All it would do is piss off your head coach, so o totally get why he didn't include it.  To act like it was incompetence to do so and not, you know, a logical compromise is just lazy homerism.

Hire Juwan Howard!

Keep as many current assistants as possible.  Take advantage of the amazing basketball culture that Coach B built -- allow Juwan to gain some head coaching experience.  He will be able to recruit.  He can learn the college recruiting restrictions with the other assistants in place.

Hire Juwan!

Hire Howard and hang the banners!

I ran into Juwan a few times as undergrads. He was always an excellent ambassador for the school and sport.

...and now that we know that every other school has been blatantly cheating since at least the fab five era, we unapologetically should hang the final four banners.

It's like the Tour de France.  You can take away the trophy from the first place guy for cheating, but who would you give it to?

The second place guy?  He cheated too.

As did the third, and forth, and . . . guys.

The Fab Five's Final Four banners don't have a home anywhere in CBB if they are looking for only a pristine place to be hung.

Wish him the best but you have to question his judgement.

Yeah, recruiting in the smarmy NCAA is tough but how about an 82 game schedule and dealing with Dan Gilbert?

Maybe B's just looking to bank some coin for a couple of years.

We are the little old man in the fedora who insists on driving exactly 55 mph on an interstate because "That's the rule."

Meanwhile, everybody else is driving 70 mph and the cops don't bother even enforcing it because even they know it's a stupid arbitrary rule.

And then in a few years the speed limit gets raised anyway.

It was all a pointless display.
