WTKA Roundtable 4/21/2022: The Medal of Honor Comment Count

Seth April 21st, 2022 at 11:24 AM

Things discussed:

  • Miggy Theater 3000
  • Terrence Shannon would be a perfect fit—Charles Matthews with better outside shooting and not as good at bad shots. 97%ile on spot-ups, is a 6'6" wing defender who played for TTU. If Diabate goes to the NBA, you bump up Houstan to the four and Shannon is a three.
  • Admissions? That seems to be the real question. He might lose a lot of credits.
  • Is there a scholarship? No way you get another 8 months without losing at least someone on the team right now. If they do, can one of Juwan's sons (Jace, probably, because of NCAA rules for blue shirts) redshirt?
  • Football scholarship situation? They're at 87 by my count, and they know they'll lose a couple more before the season.
  • Jay Wright: Didn't make it about himself. Can you name another coach who knocked us out of the tournament twice and each time we were like "Yeah, he deserves it."
  • Is the NIL/transfer system good? Complaints from those who benefited from the rot of the old system (Saban, Dabo) you can ignore right out. As for the rest, the NCAA needs to look at how to regulate this with incentives to stay at your school, and incentives for the schools to develop their own.
  • Who are the NCAA serving? The guys who want labor to be cheap.
  • If Michigan loses both Dante Moore and CJ Carr, there's a major problem with recruiting.

Paying players and "NIL" are the exact same thing, and only the NCAA needs to pretend otherwise.

Sam’s comments about an unnamed high profile recruit unanimously predicted to go to a particular school who then at the last minute picked a different school that was never figured to be a leader makes me think he was referring to Josh Conerly, who chose Oregon instead of predicted winner USC.

Sam's reference to rumors about a 7-figure NIL deal makes it easy to think Nike could swing that without breaking a financial sweat.

I assumed that was the situation as well, though if I was a Nike executive/shareholder I'd question the ROI on a (very good) left tackle going to Oregon for over a $1M.  I do think people are still feeling their way around NIL and Nike stands to benefit more than most from brand association with elite athletes but I have my doubts Conerly is going to be a player that dramatically raises Oregon's ceiling, especially with a new staff and an unproven HC getting his first gig.

I think Conerly's decision is also interesting from a school rival standpoint. He grew up in Seattle, and him choosing USC over his hometown team of Washington would sting, but would be like an Ann Arbor kid choosing Penn State or Wisconsin.

But Conerly going to Washington's bitterest long-time rival Oregon would be like an Ann Arbor kid choosing Ohio State over Michigan.

My bad, MGoLow. But I can probably do more than 5. I don't suggest this is a strength. In my meager defense, we have an hour to fill with UM sports and, well, that is getting thin, this time of the year.

Two summers ago, during COVID and when the RT shut down, Ira asked me to do a weekly hour by myself. They were just radio, not podcasts. Fortunately, I didn't have to read the reviews. I talked history of UM sports, I talked about being abandoned with a broken-down car in Adrian, and the people who helped me. [They were immigrants.] I read a Donald Hall poem. Probably, it was insufferable. I dunno. I passed on doing it last summer on the fear that it was just too much.

Overall I enjoyed the pod this week....though there are a couple of significant dates that I'm disappointed the crew didn't mention.  Because while Seth is right that 8 months is a long time, it might not be quite what you'd think because of these dates:

  • 4/24 - This is the deadline to enter yourself into the NBA draft process.  The fact that none of our players have done so publicly is pretty interesting.  If we get through the weekend and none of them have submitted their name then that's a big story.
  • 5/1 - This is the deadline for a college player to enter the transfer portal in order to use the 1-time free waiver to avoid sitting out for a fall/winter sport.  So while someone can transfer after this date, they may have to sit out a year or file a waiver and lobby the NCAA to let them be eligible.  In Michigan's case if someone on the bench wants to transfer because Shannon is coming or Hunter returns....they have about a week.
  • 6/1 - This is the deadline to exit the NBA draft and return to school if you didn't sign an agent.  The difference between this date and the last one is goofy...but when the NCAA and NBA don't get along that's what you get.

So in a week we should have a really good idea of what the roster is going to look like.  It is always possible that something changes, but it isn't quite the black hole Seth implied.

Additionally, I don't know what else to do about the rampant portal enrollment beyond being really strict about the 2nd transfer for any player forcing a sit-out (literally no waivers allowed).  However, I do think something that would be good for the game and would definitely shake things up more is if the NBA and NCAA would adopt the NHL's draft-and-follow approach in some capacity.  I think that's better for all parties involved if they'd just think outside the box a little.

Dean Smith knocked out Michigan 3 times in 1987, 1988 and in the championship game in 1993.

John Wooden knocked out Michigan twice in 1965 championship game and in first round game in 1975 en route to his last championship (OT).

Coach K knocked out Michigan in 1992 championship game and in 2011.

My thought on one time transfers that will probably make a lot of you hate me but i feel is right and will help the rule’s original intention is this:

Separate  G5 and P5. you can transfer freely one time from one to another but not within them. If you get to the P5 and realize you aren’t what you thought you were then head down. Vice versa the other way.
