WTKA Roundtable 2/23/2023: You Control You Comment Count

Seth February 23rd, 2023 at 10:28 AM

Things discussed:

  • Michigan vs MSU: The real feelings came out. Ignore the fans who make it about hate: the kid who had the "Love You, Brother" sign got it right.
  • Michigan vs MSU: Oh right, the basketball game! Tarris Reed game. Fear of playing him is he'll foul out and you don't have another center, but worth the risk to have him on the floor. Solves athleticism issues because he can play the 4 on defense and Hunter can shoot well enough to stretch on offense. Fixed the rebounding issues.
  • Jett: First time all year he was doing other stuff when his shots weren't going. Need to see more of that.
  • T-Will back minutes? Take them all from Tschetter. Don't worry about Reed because he should see the court 55% of the time between PF and C, and TW only plays 65% when he's healthy.
  • Spring Practice: Amorion Walker to cornerback is the talk. Ceiling: INCREDIBLE. Present: Says they're short on cornerbacks. Jyaire Hill shouldn't be expected to pick up the defense. Really want to see a big spring from Ja'den McBurrows.
  • OL shakeout? Craig likes Persi at LT, but there are lots of guys to consider. Zinter says Nugent is a 1-for-1 replacement for Olu.

Definitely hurts losing out on that Ole Miss transfer CB (to OSU no less), especially after we ended up hiring Partridge anyway. I wonder if having Partridge would have made a difference, or if it was always going to be an NIL battle that we were destined to lose? Would seriously suck if we could have had him had we just hired Partridge earlier...

update:  last night's WBB game vs rutgers was, in my opinion, as well-called as any B1G game as i've seen.  cleanly played and called but the crew also let physical play happen, and both ways.  very few unnecessary foul calls where a player wasn't getting an advantage.  there was even an outstanding no-call in the fourth where elise stuck tried to take a charge and play was allowed to continue through to the score.

if every game was called like that i'd be a much less complain-ey fan.

I think Seth made a really good point about the real feelings coming out for this game.

It's so easy to focus on the extreme members of each fan base gnashing their teeth because those extreme members will gnash their teeth at anything the other side does. Meanwhile, the average fans (who make up a much larger percentage of the fan base) don't make as much noise, and so are not spotlighted. It's unfortunate that an event as tragic as this was what brought out the "brotherly love" between these two institutions, and, while it seems foolish to hope that it's a launching pad for better interactions between the most heated fans, here's to hoping there's more.

Craig, thanks for pointing out the Izzhit spewed after losses:

• "Give credit to their team but they got really lucky."

• "Give them credit but we played terrible."

• Also, his standard "I'm not throwing anyone under the bus but wish [a player] had done what I told him."

Reed's high foul rate is what makes it hard for Juwan to run out a 2 big man lineup. Juwan also need Reed to backup Hunter. If Reed is in foul trouble and Hunter is hurt or needs to rest, they don't have anyone who can play the 5. That's part of the reason why you don't see 2 big lineup all that often.
