Three Up, Three Down: Hoops Edition Comment Count

You may have heard that Michigan won The Game on Saturday, so this is a mere appetizer to Brian's forthcoming column on an epic performance from the gridiron that will live in Wolverine lore for eternity.

THREE UP

How awesome is it to have Juwan Howard? Seriously, this guy is a former NBA all-star and three-time champion (twice as player, once as coach) that supports the football team in freezing weather with the joy and enthusiasm of an elementary school child whose biggest dream is to watch his beloved Wolverines knock off those jokers from Columbus.

This isn't some charade for optics. The man genuinely loves Michigan and consistently supports all sports despite a schedule that is undoubtedly running thin on leisure time. Oh yeah........did I mention Coach Howard won an outright B10 championship last season, reached the Elite 8 and reeled-in the number one recruiting class in America?

We are lucky to have him. Extremely lucky.

Moussa Diabate playing time. It's becoming increasingly clear that Moussa should be getting the bulk of available minutes at the PF spot and may very well be the third best player on the team right now. After averaging 14 minutes per game during the first three contests of the season, Diabate played nearly 22 minutes a game over the last three.

While Brandon Johns is still holding down a starting spot, Moussa is now in the closing lineup. That says a lot about where this is likely headed. During the last three games the freshman sensation is averaging nearly 11 points and over 6 rebounds on 78% from the floor while looking the part of a lottery pick on multiple occasions.

Frankie Collins, flashing. He hasn't garnered a ton of buzz, but quietly put together solid backup minutes in games against Arizona and Tarleton. In 14 minutes against the Wildcats, he graded out relatively equal to both Jones/Brooks per my UFR. But for a charge, he would've actually graded out higher than both.

Collins has looked very good as a playmaker for others, as demonstrated by his 30.3(!) assist rate.  A functional Frankie for 10-12 minutes a game at the backup PG spot allows Eli Brooks to slide off-ball more, where his role as more of a traditional floor-spacing shooter alleviates spacing issues. Perhaps more importantly, if Jones isn't up to par, Juwan Howard can have a shorter leash with his substitution patterns.

THREE DOWN

Hunter Dickinson touches. Michigan's All-American big man is only taking 8.3 FG attempts and 2.5 FTs per contest over the last three games and his usage is down nearly three points in relation to last season. There can be no sugar-coating here, Juwan Howard simply has to find more ways to get Hunter the ball in positions to score or make plays for others.

Dickinson is among the most potent offensive weapons in America and the offense simply has to run through him while he's on the court. He makes life easier for every other player on the team with his ability to collapse a defense consistently and either score or makes passes that lead directly to assists or bring about the hockey variety.

Defense, in general. The team was nothing short of brutal against Arizona and hasn't been up to par on that end of the court so far this season. Some of the early woes could be explained away with a shift from drop-coverage exclusively to a more prominent role for blitzing ball-screens with Dickinson. But the Arizona game saw mostly drop-coverage and the Wolverines were still quite poor defensively.

Some of this is undoubtedly the natural consequence of having smaller guards that don't possess great agility, particularly against an Arizona team with size/athleticism in the backcourt. But the team has shown bad habits in terms of overhelping against dribble penetration, taking unnecessary gambles when going for steals and simply getting lost on screens. This is the end of the court I'm most curious to see when Michigan takes the floor against UNC.

The wing position. The Wolverines simply aren't getting enough at the SF spot in any area. The perimeter shooting and defense in particular are falling well-short of expected performance levels. Caleb Houstan has been a target of most criticism, and he's certainly played a role, but Williams and Bufkin haven't provided much spark either.

Juwan Howard needs this position group to be a net-neutral and fast. All other position groups have been at least above-average and having someone emerge from the Houstan/Williams/Bufkin/Jackson group would solve a healthy amount of the early season issues.

Coach Howard with coach Harbaugh was my second man tears moment of the game. The first was Harbaugh and Macdonald with the power hug when the game was won. Just awesome.

Absolutely need to see more Frankie, for now and the future.

But then, it is not just about individual talent, but about chemistry, and if you have Frankie out there it just makes the need for shooting all the more urgent (Jones isn't great from deep, but probably still better than Frankie).  Eli can play off the ball, but somebody at the 3 or 4 spot has to step up and hit threes, or at least stand in the corner and present enough of a threat to provide spacing.

Football school again??

Matt,

I feel as if Frankie should be starting and if not, he should be eating into Jones minutes. Jones really is struggling just to even get the ball past half court, doesn’t appear to be a natural point guard to me. As far as Kobe, he needs more run, he didn’t even play last game. We do need Zeb back to see what he can bring this season. T Will is spending too much time on the perimeter trying to be Chaundee and he’s not him. He needs to attack, play good defense and rebound.  The defense is atrocious as of now, I will be interested as you said to see what changes have been made for NC.

Seeing all those pictures and clips of Coach Howard out there supporting Harbaugh and the football team made this win all that much sweeter. So awesome to see.

I've been on the edge of my seat waiting with anticipation for Brian's game column as well

Juwan is a First Class Act/Man. He clearly understands the pressure Jim Harbaugh has been under in just these past three years. Juwan looked as relieved as Jim that one big weight has been lifted off Jim's shoulders.

I have even more respect for Juwan than ever before. Now that's a Michigan Man!

Let's all remember this throughout the basketball season as initial indications are that there is a substantial amount of fixing and building that needs to take place with the current roster and the overall experience level of the players.

The man bleeds maize and blue, is an undeniably class act and possesses a depth of character that most of us can only aspire to reach.

I know many on this site won't listen and will go straight to their hot takes and "moar wins now!!!!!, unacceptable!!!!, I'm going to boo the players!!" type reactions if they are not somehow dominant in the next few weeks, but this is unlikely to occur as you can't fix youth/inexperience overnight and the sheer number of things to address is large and they are fairly fundamental in nature. In all likelyhood it might be more than just this season IMHO.

Let the season play out and give him time. Don't make his job more difficult by being an inpatient and intolerant douchebag. We all know how much money he makes and what the expectations are, so mentioning that as an excuse to whine will only serve as undeniable evidence of your vitriole as douchebaggery.

Do him the courtesy of supporting him in the same manner in which he supports everyone else at UM and stick with him and the team.....no matter what. If you can't do that, maybe go have an NBA fan year and come back later when your needs can be more fully met.

Howard's love for the University goes beyond sports.  How many times have we seen news reports or videos of him on campus handing out donuts to the students coming back to campus?  He just loves the kids and the U, hands down.  Amazing coach, amazing man.  We are so lucky to have him.

The TV showed Juwan Howard hugging Harbaugh on the field and Joel Klatt said, “Juwan Howard the men’s basketball coach congratulating Coach Harbaugh”... naw man, that was Juwan’s inner 1992 18yo self on the sidelines.

43yo me watched from high up in sec 302 and was transported to 1997 sophomore me rushing the field.
