It's been a long while since I've watched NHL games, but... I cannot remember a Redwings season with as poor officiating as the Big Ten showed this time.

It's perplexing, isn't it?  Is it really possible that these are the best available officials? If so, what kind of officiating are we getting in the NAHL or in High School hockey?

I also suspect that replay (in all sports) has made officiating worse. Officials do a MUCH better job in "real time" of keeping their bias out of their calls--a bang-bang play on the ice and you don't even notice who is wearing which color jersey. But on replay, it's going to be hard to keep your subconscious and conscious biases out of your calls because you know exactly who will benefit and who will be hurt when you call that phantom goal.

A black-and-white call (like a safe/out call in baseball or an offside call in hockey) is easier, yes.

But there are situations where officials are asked to review a judgement call. Did the goalie have it covered before it was knocked in by the other team? Was the knee-to-knee collision intentional or unintentional? Was the check to the player's back or his side?

When you give the ref time to reflect on judgement calls, their judgement doesn't seem to get any more accurate.  Like they say when you are taking a standardized test, your first guess is more likely to be right than your second.

It's hilarious to me that there is a loud debate on twitter about regionals because there is, for once, a regional that has actually sold out. But it sold out because it seats 3000 people and drew three huge draws.

Of course, what would really be interesting is if Michigan were playing in Grand Forks and Western were playing at MSU. You'd sell 15k+ tickets and both places would be electric. It's amazing that people are trying to keep the old system when *that* is available.

I just had to pass on to the hockey fans on Mgoblog 2 interesting facts that I just read:

(1) The smallest post-pandemic crowd that North Dakota has played in front of, home or away, was at an NCAA regional.

(2) The smallest post-pandemic crowd that Michigan has played in front of, home or away, was at an NCAA regional.

RE: dressing the 19th skater.

I don't really see a downside here. That skater is a buffer against an on-ice injury or a different guy struggling.

Yeah, it's hard to get into the flow of the game if that guy isn't getting ice time and the coaches shouldn't be putting him out there just to get said ice-time, but there's really no downside. The guy gets to dress when he otherwise wouldn't and he has an outside shot of playing for the reasons mentioned above.

I don't have a problem with it.

Also, was anyone else really annoyed by MSU's backup goaltender standing the entire time at Munn? Every time Michigan was in the offensive zone on the left of the broadcast and the puck would come out to the blue line near MSU's bench, there would be a white sweater right there. A few times I thought Michigan was about to give up a breakaway and the other times you couldn't see what was going on at that part of the ice.
