Analysis: Michigan’s offense was better than last night’s…in a way. They did get a number of Grade A chances in front of the net. They finished none of them, unfortunately. Jack LaFontaine was very, very good all series, too. He snuffed out anything that Michigan threw at him. Without the five super talented guys that are out for this series, it is just not the same offense. It is very similar to the previous couple years. From a possession stand point, Close Corsi was 21-14, Minnesota. That’s also telling.

Analysis: The was better than last night, for the most part. While they did struggle in their end at times, it was not the egregious DZTO-fest from previous games…aside from the horrendous centering pass from Pehrson that allowed Koster to scoop up the loose puck, skate down the slot, and pick a corner. It was already 3-0 at that point, though. Summers did get a ten minute misconduct that saw Gingell get his first action of the year. Jay Keranen also looked competent, again. The first goal was a bad matchup. Michigan had the GVW line against the Reedy line to start. The second shift of the night for the Reedy line came against the Johnson-Becker-Pasta line, though…and it produced a goal. After that, the GVW line was on the ice against the Reedy line.

Too many of these in this series [Patrick Barron]

Analysis: Michigan’s penalty kill was not great all series. They allowed goals on their first two penalties. The first may have been a little unlucky as Scott Reedy knocked down the Brinkman drive from the point…right to the waiting stick of Sammy Walker. The second one was worse. Minnesota got three shots from about two feet away. Mann saved the first two with thundering pad saves…the last one is put away on a rebound. On a positive not, Michigan DID kill two penalties in the third period, though. The game was out of hand at that point, though. You just can’t take penalties against the Gophers.

Blankenburg got a very nice look on the Michigan’s man advantage that produced a nice rebound; however, all of Minnesota’s skaters walled off any Wolverine in the area until the puck was eventually cleared. That is a big difference in these two Kills. Groll had a hard shot from the dot, later…but that was about it.

Mann and Portillo were good…but so was Jack LaFontaine [Patrick Barron]

Analysis: Strauss Mann started again, and made every save he possibly could make and then a couple thereafter. After the Pehrson “centering pass,” he was lifted for Erik Portillo. Portillo played well. He made a few very athletic saves. He also looks like he can puck-handle, as well. This game was never about the goalie play for Michigan.

Analysis: Luke Morgan caught a terrible pass at the red line and burst into the zone, alone, but LaFontaine made a nice glove save.

When Michigan was pressing, the Gophers caught them for a 2v1, but Owen Power’s unicorn stick was just long enough to break up the pass.

Not a terribly surprising result given the guys we're missing, but still really disappointing to get pushed around so badly by a Minnesota team that is also missing guys. They're gonna need to have a good 2nd half

Both teams were missing young talent, Michigan more than Minnesota but watching both games I never really thought Michigan would win either game.  Minnesota was just a much better team both nights.  Mel generally gets improvement from his teams over the course of the season but, at this point, it seems like it will be a long year.  Getting swept by both Minnesota and ND at home puts us in a huge hole.   Not really seeing this as a tournament team - if there is such a thing this year.

Last night felt somewhat like the last few Red years, when it seemed like every grade-A chance Minnesota got was a laser to the corner of the net, and every one we got was a laser right to the midsection of the pads of the goalie.  Hats off to LaFontaine for the shutout, but man, covering up the five-hole seemed like the toughest thing he did all night.
