Matt & Seth Show: For All the Roses
Update: YES I GOT THE TIMEOUTS REVERSED SORRY THE INFO IS GOOD THE SLEEP IS DEPRIVED. EXPLANATION COMING.
Matt Demorest, Realtor and Lender and I have brought back our (sometimes-)weekly video short. The purpose of these is to show you something on film that you as a fan will be able to pick up on when you see it in the future. Or to just show you what people are talking about. This time we broke down the final stop against Alabama, what each team was trying to do and why, and why Michigan had it so well defended (even if Alabama had executed it better). Then we hit the Corum TD because why not.
If you're in the housing market, Matt's the guy.
Repair:
Alabama came out in an unbalanced formation and Michigan saw and called timeout.
When Alabama came out the second time Michigan responded to the extra pass threat by showing a run blitz.
Alabama did not want to run into that so they called timeout. The rest of it is correct. Michigan came out in the same look again, and Bama was in the wrong play for it, but out of timeouts and without a check at the line.
Sorry I got it wrong, I had it right when I was practicing and then I went off and did another thing.
There is nothing after the jump because it's video content.

I do very much like this picture. It will be great fun to look at while I mash F5. Maybe if I'm lucky work will slow down and I can sneak an earbud to listen to this.

Seems like Stewart had a veer technique. Lined up in C gap but actually has B gap. With Barrett responsible for C. With the pulling guard, that really gave him space to get leverage on the Tackle. Moore likely had the same thing. So Grant and Graham have A's and the ends have B's.
This leaves the pulling guard with Both Mikey and Rod to block. Didn't work.
My favorite part of this play is that no one player made the play. Our Def is a group of dudes that all get to shine at some point and the fact that the game was sealed where The TEAM made the play is emblematic of the whole year.

1) I would like a 30 for 30 doc just about this play. This play is endlessly entertaining and debatable. I kind of would like to have seen it ending with Moore making the tackle by beating the block.
2) Seth, I know you're operating on four hours sleep for the last week. But Michigan called the first TO. Alabama called the second TO.
3) I don't understand why the RT's job involves taking any kind of step back to make the block. It's not a pass block. Why wouldn't he just be trying to drive Stewart to the right rather than allow him inside the hash at all?

1) I think we covered all of it.
2) Yeah...
3) It's a hinge block. Getting depth gives him time before he's in contact with the defender and should, in theory, prevent anyone from impacting the run because the QB shouldn't still be on the hash by then.

I was hoping that you guys did these 2 plays. Wish came true. It jumped right off the screen at me when I rewatched.
Essentially the same play for the game, each team. We execute. Bama doesnt
Our play uses a lead blocker, theirs uses motion as a ploy to get a man out of the box (poor mans lead blocker).
Bothe have guards pull from backside.
Ours is a handoff for the back to follow the pulling guard, theirs utilizes the qb to follow the guard.
The Main differences were execution or lack thereof - Bama has the bad snap, and Milroe buries himself in the line after that, instead of following his guard. Then athleticism - Corum's jump cut and maybe more important was Barnhart having the feet to get around Loveland doing all he can not to get pushed back too far. If he doesnt get around to lead upfield, no way we score.

There was an Alabama linebacker in every passing lane when throwing over the middle. That’s what impressed me the most about their defense. Looked like their most successful defensive gameplan piece to me. How did they manage to get a linebacker in the passing lane seemingly all game?

I dont say this a lot but I think we should ran more.

great analysis! so helpful understanding why. The question I have is on the last play, when Alabama running back motions out, why doesn't Paige follow and cover him, leaving Colson in the box? Seems like win/win for Michigan, have a safety on the back annd leave the linebacker in the box.

Most defense will want to have their linebacker in man on the running back. That way if the running back is carrying the ball the linebacker is already running right at him.

Love me some nerd, in the weeds, micro-second football. Keep it up Seth and Matt.
