Blogpoll Week 10

By Brian — November 11th, 2009 at 12:01 PM — 5 comments
Filed under:
  • blogpoll

Rank Team PPB StdDev Delta
1 Florida (32) 24.0 0.8 --
2 Alabama (37) 24.0 1.0 1
3 Texas (24) 23.8 0.9 1
4 TCU (1) 21.4 1.0 1
5 Cincinnati 21.3 0.8 1
6 Boise State 20.0 1.4 1
7 Georgia Tech 18.9 1.3 3
8 Pittsburgh 15.8 2.8 5
9 LSU 14.6 3.4 --
10 Oregon 14.2 2.6 2

Yes, that is Oregon sliding in at the back end of the top ten. No, USC is not in front of them, thought it's a close thing: the Trojans are #11 and just 0.3 PPB back of the Ducks. Even though a ton of Blogpoll voters fell asleep and made the same bizarre error all three major polls did by thoughtlessly shoving USC up to six spots in front of Oregon, justice won out in the end.

I give up: I thought it was ridiculous that the Blogpoll should be part of the BCS. Now it's obvious. It will never, ever be. But this year has proven that this things comes out with objectively better results than anything else. Yes, I know someone voted for TCU #1 and someone is still voting for Oklahoma. Yes, every week someone vastly overrates his chosen team. It's still way better.

More, including the CK Award's incredible streak extending with the Navy win over Notre Dame, at CBS Sports. After the jump: Tim's revised ballot.

Rank Team Delta
1 Texas
2 Alabama
3 Florida
4 Cincinnati 1
5 TCU 3
6 Boise State 1
7 Georgia Tech 3
8 Pittsburgh 6
9 Iowa 5
10 Oregon 4
11 LSU 2
12 Houston 1
13 Southern Cal
14 Ohio State 2
15 Penn State 3
16 Oklahoma State 1
17 Virginia Tech 1
18 Miami (Florida) 2
19 Arizona
20 Utah 3
21 Stanford
22 Oregon State
23 Texas Tech 2
24 Nebraska
25 Brigham Young
Last week's ballot

Dropped Out: Notre Dame (#15), Wisconsin (#21), California (#22), Auburn (#24).

Only one change from the draft ballot: Moved USC ahead of Ohio State. The resumes are so similar (loss to an elite team, horrible loss to a conference opponent) that the head-to-head bumps USC ahead.

Week 3

I'll try asking this again but why are you calling out the lone guy who voted for TCU? I'll say what I said last week again. If UF, UT or 'Bama had the exact same schedule nobody would care and they'd still be getting 20+ first place votes simply because they started higher. What if TCU beats Utah? Are you still going to give people who vote TCU #1 crap?

Strength of Schedule:
Florida - 42
Alabama - 27
Texas - 52
TCU - 47
Cincinnati - 67

If they're the one (or few)

If they're the one (or few) dissenter(s), they should get called out. Same was going on when one or two people voted Iowa. That seems fair. It's not that they're wrong, they just have something that stands out.

By the numbers

The only reason they are the dissenters is because TCU didn't start in the top 5. If you're just calling out the dissenters because they don't agree with the general consensus that's fine (I suppose, although I'd phrase it less negatively) but last week Brian said he didn't understand why anyone would vote for TCU. That just doesn't compute with me - Brian's a smart guy who, obviously, knows a lot about football. I've yet to come across any legitimate argument why TCU shouldn't be in the same conversation w/ the top 3 (you can argue 'bama based on strength of schedule but UT and UF have essentially the same as TCU and TCU played their tough non-conference games on the road).

Hey, CBS

Um, how is Florida #1 over Alabama when the PPB are equal and the Tide has more #1 votes?

I know the software says it's

I know the software says it's a tie, but Alabama has a couple more points than the Gators

1st paragraph of the CBS link.
