Coach Hoke talks Recruiting

Submitted by Sleeping with … on
  • Offensively - OL's are needed
  • Defensively - DL and LB
  • Ultimately, looking for guys who will understand the value of a degree and play michigan football.

He didn't mention anything about touching kids this time.

Sounds like BH is going to recruit players with good character as well as talent - players that will represent the team well and not be an embarassment.  In the short-term, some of the more high-profile players such as Denard and Tate are as much the face of the University as the head coach.

not that RR didnt.

Even though his first two recruits have been from Ohio, from he does appear to casting a national net, which I think was a big worry to many.

From just the short time span and some of the visitors he has been able to lure, I have been impressed with the work he and his staff have put in during this truncated recruiting period, reagardless of how the class ends up.  I don't think we will have to worry about recruiting with Hoke, especially if we start winning a little more.

Funny how Hoke seeming genuine, even though he's not a polished speaker, could be said about RR, though then it was sometimes considered a negative.

Seems to me though, that Hoke it really using the Michigan name more.  I know RR got some good recruits, and players looked at Michigan because it's Michigan, but I'm just getting the impression that Hoke is using that far more in his sales pitch(How getting a Michigan offer is a true honor).  Could just be how the media wants to portray it though.

for Hoke's affection for UM.  At then end of every interview he says emphatically "Go Blue" and means it.  RR could sell the resources at the unviersity, and his football program, but just by virtue of the shit he was going through, could not have felt the affection for the place that Hoke - beloved by all does.

Could RR have developed that over time -- yes -- and had he been supported more, but there is a palpable difference.

That being said, I think RR was a very good recruiter, and he did an excellent job of showcasing the university -- even recruits who didnt end up coming to UM, once they visited campus always seemed very impressed with how they ran a recruiting visit.

Why is RR still a topic on this board?
1. Hoke got his job because RR was fired. 2. Hoke will be coaching mostly RR's players. 3. Hoke was hired because he had Michigan "history" and RR didn't. 4. Hoke's approach to the game is juuuuuuust a bit different than RR's. 5. Many of those who praise Hoke are doing it with backhanded insults of RR. 6. If Hoke doesn't win more than he loses, you will hear RR's name even more. 7. It is human nature to compare a new coach to the last one, no matter what the circumstances. Are those enough reasons for you?

to see how this class finishes before passing judgement on Hoke as a recruiter. However, I will say that when RR came in with short notice he landed some 4 star guys in the little recruiting time that remained. We'll see if that happens for Hoke.

RR took over a team that had just won an impressive bowl game and had been ranked in the top 5 while that class of recruits were in high school. Plus, RR came in with a lot of national buzz from having taken teams to recent BCS bowls and made credible runs at NCs. While I am excited with Hoke's future, a class full of 3* roster depth seems like a solid accomplishment this year.

for not blindly proclaiming Hoke the greatest recruiter in the history of Michigan football. Withholding judgement to be based on results was clearly something to be neg'd for.

There's short notice, and then there's almost no notice.... RR was hired in December, and had about six weeks to recruit. Hoke has about half that.

I just read the OP's summary (Offensively - OL's are needed), didn't watch the video, so maybe Hoke mentioned it, we really need a QB in this class with Tate gone.

I like the cut of his Jib. This is a great success story, from staring in a movie with Sarah Silverman, to Head Football Coach, at the University of Michigan. Only in America.

I disagree about "needing" a QB in this class.  I mean, it wouldn't hurt, but it's far from necessary.  What quality QB's are left?  Any?  I'm sure our recruiting is going to be night/day compared to the current one.  At Michigan we've never had to "settle" for QB talent.  Don't fret, my son.

I don't see how WR isn't crucial.  Most of our playmaking WRs will be upperclassmen and we need to get some more guys RS'd so we're not playing true freshmen come 2013.
