Nothing professional sports (except the Lions thread on Sunday).Just above..up there... Look, we know you know the rules...but you're doing a pretty bad job of communicating them, which is why people are saying "What, no pro threads??"

I don't understand how we can consider the Lions a professional sports team YUK YUK YUK.

Most of what happened last night, I was asleep for. That said, if something is locked, the moderator either thinks that the content was stupid/should be downvoted/so negative, that for teh sanity of the board, people just get it out of their system and move on. Because the thread is locked in a few of those situations, the moderator doesn't have to do the arbitrary point deduction of the OP, and the points system can be allowed to work on its own.
If something is that stupid, negbomb it. If something resonates with you, but is very negative, vote what you want, if you want, and come back tomorrow after you've had some time to relax.

It's just the other ones, the "tangential" ones, that seemed kinda pointless. Endless YOU SUCK posts are a better call to freeze than info on a restaurant that could be gone to on a Big Ten road trip. Or a tv announcer (after midnight).

I think some people get a little taste of authority and like to throw their weight around. This sight is extremely well run and moderated, with the exception of a certain Mod that seems to have to puff his/her chest out every now and again.

"I don't know what you're referring to, but maybe if certain older, wiser people hadn't acted like such little babies, and gotten so mushy, then everything would be ok... and I think certain older people, like you, and your colleague, shouldn't be leching after their students, especially when some of them can't even get their own wives pregnant... and they certainly shouldn't be making slanderous accusations, especially when certain young, naive peoples' mothers are paralegal secretaries at the cities biggest law firm, and have won many successful law suits, and if you want to keep questioning me like this, I won't continue without my attorney present."
September 19th, 2010 at 2:03 AM ^
wtf are you talking about?
September 19th, 2010 at 2:07 AM ^
From the movie Election.
September 19th, 2010 at 2:24 AM ^
Whenever someone references "certain people" when they actually mean "that guy everyone knows I am actually talking about," I think of this extremely funny exploitation of that conceit. I think a couple people got it. I'm mostly sad that I saw that movie in college and it's now 11 years old.

But authority tastes SO GOOD. If I ever got mod privileges around here I'd go b-a-n-a-n-a-yeahs drunk with power so fast.

Screenshot saved for your confirmation hearing so your toadies can't scrub the record. Sucker!

If I would've looked down just a bit I could've just replied to your post. I agree 100%. Dude needs to get a life.

I'm not going to lie, if I were a mod I would have been cracking skulls a lot earlier in the week than today. No wait, I take that back. I would have created a "sub-Mgoboard" for all of the content not fit for the actual Mgoboard (which is already discussions and epinions not fot for the diaries), and made negbanging free for any thread that's moved there.
That's my prescription for making everybody feel better: mob justice with a few sure to be meltdowns thrown in the mix.
Also something to consider: when there's this much crap posted after a close win, how bad do you think it'll be after any sort of loss?
September 19th, 2010 at 10:51 AM ^
Mostly about the game? So it'd be on-topic. Stupid, yes, as you say. But apparently that's not a problem.
September 19th, 2010 at 1:57 AM ^
I suppose this is the normal progression of things. There is a subset of new "mods" recently empowered to impose their particular brand of acceptability on the proceedings.
September 19th, 2010 at 2:04 AM ^
Having an open thread deleted today, because it was too close to another open thread, just to have ANOTHER mod basically create the same thread a few hours later. Which then required a third thread later, so by deleting one we got 3+.

This is a pretty cool oblique slapfight. I think the one thing that is abundantly clear is that this is a place for discussion with boundaries, not a free-for-all. People are going to prefer different levels of board totalitarianism. I don't care. I'm sure the evolving sensibilities of the blog illuminati will continue to fine tune the balance between creating a place we can feel is our own and a place free from the beastly tendencies that fester in the unfettered internet.
September 19th, 2010 at 9:49 AM ^
This is why I don't create any threads. I can't be on the board all day long, so I miss many topics. Create a topic that already went through six hours ago, and the penalty is virtual castration and negbang. Start a topic you think others might be interested in? Surely someone will bang you 'cause they don't think it's relevant.
Seriously, I think posters and mods could lighten up at times. IMO, a few OT threads help fill the void between games and maybe steer us away from beating dead horses (How many games does RRod have to win this year?) so often.
We are all M fans, but have different interests that reveal themselves over time. For example, I love how the topic of craft beer pops up from time to time and the opinions/recommendations roll in. Good stuff, and as someone else pointed out, FB doesn't happen in a vacuum. Slightly OT provides M football stress relief sometimes.
September 19th, 2010 at 10:53 AM ^
Exactly! You are spot on, my friend. I'm in the same boat with you.
September 19th, 2010 at 10:28 AM ^
There needs to be an OT board.
Sooner than later.
kthxbye.

If you take away all the tangential posts and even some of the random posts, you take away what makes Mgoblog different from other college football blogs. I like reading about what others think about Ann Arbor bars, or seeing the M emblazoned go kart that some guy is trying to sell. I like having the occasional hilarious thread with just the thinnest connection to Michigan football. I probably wouldn't read this blog on a regular basis if it was just about Michigan football in the strictest, most factual sense.
My suggestion is this: make Football Saturdays a sacred day but let some of the random content flow on all other days. On Football Saturdays, you can only post about the games that are being played that day. I think opinions about the games should be welcomed, too. Sure, some people are drunk when they write, but isn't that part of college football? I say, if you're going to edit, edit those who can't put together a sentence. But let the outpouring of (sometimes unreasonable and outrageous) emotion stand.

Those are both MGoKosher, as long as you aren't turning mgoblog into a place to sell all your mgopossessions. That's one reason that we moved tickets to their own thread. We're not craigslist of Michigan stuff.
Thinnest connection is tough. I'm one to let things go, like ricksline.com. That was awesome, and definitely related to Ann Arbor, so I can see that being fine. Other mods, like Tim (always my example for a short leash on content), may not.
September 19th, 2010 at 11:03 AM ^
I wouldn't want to turn Mgoblog into Craig's List at all - maybe that was a bad example. I just think this is a really unique community - passionate about M football, well-informed, and well-read and witty as well. Many of the members have the ability to be tangential and relevant at the same time. Let's not lose that element of the blog.
September 19th, 2010 at 12:21 PM ^
So for you to say that the only appropriate OT is the Lions game today is complete bs. Either both the Lions and Tigers can be discussed today, or neither.

Check out some of my responses. I think it fleshes out the details a bit more.

I just read this post this morning, didn't know. Just wanted to make sure none of our local pro sports teams weren't getting shafted at the expense of another.
