OSU vs Marshall - Pryor looked good 17 for 25 for 247 - 529 total yards...wait for Miami

Submitted by TESOE on

I watched some of this game.  The Terrelle who showed up for Oregon in the Rose Bowl was in evidence vs. Marshall.  Next week will tell if OSU is championship worthy, but in general they looked pretty good.  Moeller, Rolle and Chekwa all played well (I didn't see all of the game but Heyward was not a huge factor??).  Any other insights from this game?  I missed the best of the first half.

It's easy to look at the good things he does when he plays against bad opponents, but if you look to see if he has improved on his weaknesses from last year, that's when you start to see what type of player you can expect him to be. Yea, he hit a wide open receiver when the CB was playing 10 yards outside the receiver on a Post route. He also resorted to throwing the ball up for grabs when he fumbled the ball and had three guys in his face once he picked it up. Had it been a BCS team, that likely would have been picked so that he could save 5 yards on a sack.

He seems to be improved over last year, but I still don't think he is anywhere near where a 3-year starting QB should be. If getting a guy in his face is all it takes to cause him to throw the ball up for grabs, then I like our chances come November.

had it been picked would have pinned Marshall inside the 5.   You bring up one pass, the first TD to wide open Posey (I think that is what you are referencing) but what about the perfect pass to a streaking Sanz over the middle?  The second Posey TD in a tight low right window.   He barely missed Posey for another TD which supposedly was Posey slowing up on the route.  I didn't say he played perfectly but he did play pretty well.  A few mental mistakes, yeah for sure.  A lot of improvement in read progression?  Yes.  As to The Game, I'm not sure what secondary you think you have but I think your boys will have their hands full come November.

I absolutely can't wait for the day when Michigan returns to prominence enough that a guy that is 20-4 starting under center gets the kind of scrutiny Pryor is getting from some people on this board, this isn't necessarily directed at you joeyb but your comment is one I hear made quite a bit.

Pryor looked good. Was it against Marshall? Yes. Miami will be a much bigger test, but it's about time people stopped saying that there isn't enough data there to be conclusive. Clearly he isn't an awful quarterback. He does enough to not lose games (Purdue notwithstanding). I'd be pretty freaking happy with that out of any of our three quarterbacks right now.

I wasn't trying to say that he is bad; if anything, I'd say he's adequate. I just don't see him as the Heisman candidate or much improved player over last year that he is being made out to be. The reason I brought up that specific play was because one of the announcers said, "I've seen a lot of Heisman winners make that throw." Any starting QB on a BCS team needs to make that throw.

I basically equate him to a lesser Brian Griese that can run. He manages the ball, but I don't see him leading any 4th quarter comebacks against a top 25 defense. He just needs to make sure not to turn the ball over and let the other 21 players win the game.
