Civil discourse towards people you hate
I was very proud of a recent exchange with a Sparty over email, so I thought I'd share. If it helps just one Michigan fan realize that civil discourse is possible with people of lower educational and moral standards, then I've made a difference in this world...
(I kid I kid Sparties... don't be so sensitive)
Anyway, Sparty compliments some of my work and requests a wallpaper of Greg Jones (?!)
I write back:
"Appreciate the request. but to be honest with you, there's no way I would ever do a MSU wallpaper. I'm sure you understand. Thanks for emailing."
He responds:
"I understand. I probably dislike UM as much as you dislike MSU. Figured it wouldn't hurt to ask though. go green"
See?.... Very professional and calm interaction between two people that wouldn't piss on the other if he were on fire....
My job here is done.

Thanks for translating it from caveman-speak. Or was that one of the non-alum fans?
(kidding, of course. there are no non-alum fans.)

Usually, but especially during the summer, on almost any football site, most "civil discourse" looks something like this:
"You don't agree with me. Therefore you are wrong. And you suck."
I would rather just "agree to disagree" with people myself. It makes life a lot easier. But sometimes not quite as funny.

"No I don't have you as much as you hate me. My hatred goes:
OSU
ND
MSU
Sorry"

Oh shit!! Being de-friended on facebook is worse than being publicly executed by a guillotine.
Been there. Not fun. Being de-friended that is. Michael Phelps, why are we not friends anymore?!

Congrats. Two people managed to not be total assholes to each other.

imagine the understanding one can obtain when everyone refrains from insults.

You're letting us on. I translated your response into Sparty talk:
"Shurpty doop snaggle plop gaggle corn madaggle poof." That's the only possible way he comprehended your repsonse.
In other news, I was at my fiance's aunt's wedding today. Their cousin is a Notre Dame fan. I had no trouble telling him I never want his team in the Big Ten. He agreed because of money. I said it's because Notre Dame LOOK A NON-CATHOLIC and he agreed.
