He brings up the Eli Manning article from the NYT where Eli talks about scruffing up balls, etc during the week to submit to officials on gameday as "See! Eli does it. Nobody's going after him! Everybody does it! Witch hunt!" He fails to mention that you can do whatever you want to balls and submit them in any state you like to gameday officials. The difference is whatever balls Eli uses in games are cleared by the officials. If they aren't up to measure they are rejected. The balls the Pats submitted were cleared but mysteriously got altered afterwards during the game. Kind of a big difference there, Sloshy McDrunkerson.

And as a commenter mentioned above, the amount the balls were deflated was consistent with the temperature the game was played in.  The punishment doesn't fit anything other than Goodell can't tolerate any affront to his ego.
