MGoPodcast 7.17: Other Than Gary
1 hour 48 minutes
OTHER THAN GARY starring Denard Robinson and Jake Rudock, 8:30, NBC
A big thanks to our sponsors. The show is presented by UGP & Moe's and frankly would not be happening without them; Rishi and company have been on board here from almost the beginning. Shopping with them helps us and supports good dudes. Check out 100years.moe for the rich history of Michigan's oldest apparel store.
Our other sponsors are also key in the expanding empire: thanks to Homesure Lending, Ann Arbor Elder Law, the Residence Inn Ann Arbor Downtown, and the University of Michigan Alumni Association.
Offense
All superlatives on this podcast are "Other than Rashan Gary" and many are also "Other than Khaleke Hudson." Brandon Peters is good; the wide receivers are diverse and plentiful; tight ends out the wazoo; tackle the main downer.
Defense
Starts at 37:18
Some guy named Rashan Gary. Suddenly a ton of linebackers. A couple of key pieces at corner. Safety a concern.
Ann Arbor Minute and Gimmicky Top Five
Starts at 1:07:56
Gimmicky Top Five is just "favorite recruits in the class" (other than Gary and Hudson). You can tell that this is a good class because Ace and I have almost entirely different lists.
Across the Crooked Blue Line w/ Steve Lorenz
Starts at 1:22:00
Having just run down the class in some detail we ask Steve for an overview of Michigan's PWO class, which is a dozen strong and possesses a number of players who could break through to be the next Kovacs, Glasgow, or Glasgow. We also ask him about the best recruiting story of the year and put him through the TERRIFYING LIGHTNING ROUND.
MUSIC
"Across 110th Street"
"Still Alive" by Jonathan Coulton
"We Were Sad But Now We're Rebuilding" by Bear vs. Shark
"Roc Boys(And The Winner Is)" by Jay-Z

I can see where Kingston gets his intensity from judging by Sam's story about his father randomly walking up to him and asking about his son's recruitment to Michigan without telling Sam who he is haha.

"Clemson, Ole Miss, and Auburn, and maybe FSU are the three schools I don't feel comfortable recruiting against late, and you can read between the lines." Unsubtle, Steve. But honesltly are those the only three/four paying up?

I mean... Bama just recruits off of Saban's dynasty status now. I doubt they need to pay anyone.
LSU is just king in Louisana.

getting them summer jobs where they don't need to work, etc.
Remember DJ Fluker's twitter slip (where later he said he was hacked, of course)?
There's lots of ways for players (or their family, etc.) to receive financial benefits, directly or indirectly. We only discover it when someone opens their mouth, e.g., Tunsil's stepdad, etc.

but the truth is that Ole Miss is the only real worry of these 3. I mean the NCAA actually found a case of private financial support (which is incredibly rare) at Ole Miss just last year. FSU and Clemson pay as much as any other programs, which isn't much. In fact FSU and Clemson have both lost at least 5 targets/commits to SEC West programs that I can recall in the past couple years due to what is likely 'financial supplements'. When it comes to paying players the SEC West programs (esp. Auburn, Bama, Ole Miss, LSU) are on a different level.

You know it's a strong recruiting class when over half the players are mentioned as favorites or potential standouts.
That second song is stuck in my head.

He already has a D1-A frame, and only needs to put on 20 lbs before he gets PT. And he comes from American Heritage, which is an elite HS program (e.g,. last year, they beat IMG Academy, only lost to DeMatha by 1 point, etc.). I could see him developing into another Funchess.
I just keep listening to this, starving for insights on the 2017 season
