OT: Final day before MLB trade deadline open thread
Figured I'd throw an open thread up to consolidate the inevitable moves that will be made today. From the Tigers' perspective, I wouldn't be surprised to see Cespedes and probably Davis moved. There's also speculation around Avila and Simon, but I don't see anyone being interested in those guys.
Other moves/news from around the league today:
- Baltimore got Gerardo Parra from the Brewers. Not a sexy move, but he's having a career year and may be able to help them in a playoff push.
- Lots of chatter around Aroldis Chapman and Craig Kimbrel. I would be surprised to see the Reds give up Chapman, but I expect Kimbrel will be moved (probably to the Yankees).
- Jay Bruce is looking to be heading to the Mets in exchange for Zach Wheeler. If that comes to fruition, I think the Reds come out on top in that deal.
- The Indians are probably going to trade Carlos Carrasco.
It's an interesting time, that's for sure. Cespedes is definitely Detroit's biggest trade chip right now. I expect Detroit would get 2-3 prospects in return. My hope is that they would somehow also bolster their bullpen in that deal.
That he ends up on the Sox by the end of today (ambiguous since it could be either White or Red).
I get the feeling that Tigers are reluctant to trade Cespedes to the White Sox in fears that they'll throw a lot of $ to re-sign him.
That said I think Yoenis' market is the Mets, White Sox, and Yankees.
I am dumb...I thought I read somewhere about the Red Sox being interested, but can't find it and it makes ZERO sense since they are out of it. Disregard the Red, only White!
would be a great fit for the cubbies or giants too. both teams need to decide how serious they are in going for it.
Most MLB relievers were minor league starters/MLB failed starters. The reason the Tigers bullpen sucked is that they traded every valuable arm they had.
I know that the Fister trade still rankles, but overall I have tremendous confidence in DD to do what's in the best interests of the Tigers. He got great value for Price, especially given the Tigers' depleted farm system.
I suspect that we've not seen an announcement on Cespedes because DD is extracting maximum value from him. On Soria, I don't know what to make of the SS the Tigers got in return, but if the Tigers are writing off 2015 I'm glad they got value.
On Avila, I think he is an undervalued player. While his BA is low, he never strikes out, so he is not as bad as he might seem offensively. Defensively he is superb - and it might be best for all concerned if Avila is traded should Ilitch decide to replace Dombrowski with Avila Sr.
Anyway, thanks for making this thread. I'll be curious to see how the next few hours unfold.
While I agree he's undervalued I think he's expendable now with McCann's emergence. No reason to sign him after the season so they may as well see if they can get anything for him now. Maybe somebody will throw the Tigers a draft pick or something for him.

never striking out. He's struck out 44 times in 146 plate appearances (120 ABs). The guy is the king of whiffs.
Trade every single player (even Miggy). That is where I am at with this team. This team does have JD and Jose as young potential stars and a younger catcher that is showing some promise. However, the window has shut drastically (maybe not entirely closed) but I am glad they are sellers.
Why would we trade our Middle Linebacker!?!?!??! what!?!?
If we don't move Cespedes by 4pm we HAVE to resign him. He probably won't bring a lot back in a trade, but with the way our farm system is, any little piece helps.
It's nice not to worry about defense in LF, he has some good power at the plate, and lordy, that arm.
I like what we've gotten from the first two trades. I don't think Cespedes will get 2-3 prospects (at least not multiple quality ones) because he's out of contract after this season and he's not as valuable as a guy like Price. If we get a guy that has potential to be solid reliever and a good prospect, I'd be fairly happy with that.
Cespedes wants to test free agency.
If he wants to be in Detroit he'll come back in free agency. In the meantime, get something for him. He's not doing the Tigers any good the next two months so why not.
Yeah it makes zero sense for them to give up on Carrasco, especially considering they were extremely patient with him until he finally came into his own. They have him under control til 2020 I think as well, so that return would have to be massive on its own...
As a long suffering Jays fan (they won their last title when I was in the sixth grade) it's just nice to have a trade deadline that wasn't a series fo salary dumps followed by talk about the future.
Looks like Dan Haren to the Cubs. Not sure who Chicago gave up to get him, but it sounds like two minor leaguers. Good get for the Cubs.
Latest news is saying that Bruce to the Mets is not happening now. Mets got cold feet again.
The latest on Cespedes mentioned the possibility of a trade with Baltimore for Kevin Gausman. That would be fantastic, but it doesn't seem likely that the O's would want to give up Gausman (and understandably so). Also sounds like the Nats are stepping into the ring. Not sure who they have in the minors, but with the way the Fister deal has worked out, I'd say stay away from any offer Rizzo is making you. The White Sox also keep getting mentioned, but I just can't see them seriously making a push for the playoffs.
Living in Baltimore and seeing Gausman the past few years has left me even more confused on what he is/can become.
He has zero semblence of a breaking ball and hasn't looked like he's got the feel to develop one comfortably as well. With that being the case can he really be anything other than a reliever? How successful can you really be in the show without a slider or a curveball?
His fastball is tremendous as well as his changeup, but he really is an odd guy to watch pitch.
Jayson Stark just said Cespedes to the Mets is a done deal, we'll see what the return is.
Doesn't sound like that's the case =(
Fuller and Cessa are the players on receiving end for #Tigers in Cespedes deal.
