Jack Miller to forego 5th year

Per Sam Webb twitter. Puts some context to his 'gut feeling' about Kugler.

He was never the greatest, still struggled a bit when asked to handle things one-on-one, but he was very consistent getting into his assignments. If you go by the -2 to +2 scale, we're -2 is a "Kill", Zero is "doing your assignment", and +2 is owning the defender, Miller was consistently zeroes with some ones. He rarely was responsible for not getting his job done and at times flashed pretty good technique, he just didn't dominate. It was consistent, but you can take that out of a center.

So with that, I'm a bit surprised by this news. IMO, there is no way this is addition by subtraction. It may be that Kugler had passed him on the depth chart. My guess is Kugler is a bit better suited for the system (including the system last year) but he probably would have mixed more -2, -1 for the trade off of a few more ones, and the goal last year was consistency, something Miller provided in spades. If Kugler can be consistently out of the negatives and flash some more positive numbers, that's a good sign, but you don't win by losing what is at worst solid, consistent depth.

Good luck to Miller though.

Excellent assessment!  Most consistent is actually best when you're talking about O linemen.  Compare him to Kalis and he compares favorably.  Kalis might pancake a guy one play and then trip over his own feet the next.  Miller was sound technique wise and did his job more often than any other lineman we had.

I doubt Kugler passed him on the depth chart, but I hope he's ready to step up this year.  This is a fairly big loss though.

Is it possible he just received a bomb ass job offer? And they needed a commitment? Just my guess, with the odd timing, and possible starting status. Either way, Congrats and Good Luck with future endeavors. Go Blue!

And that's just like like most college athletes. It's hard to fault him for making a decision that he considers to be best for his future.

In press conferences and interviews, Jack Miller seemed to be fairly articulate, poised and a good representative for last year's Michigan football team. I believe that his uncle is former Major League Baseball Manager Jim Leyland, so Jack should have some good family connections that can open some doors for him as he pursues a business career. Wish him well.

Glasgow's got this. I remember reading here the ND Def lineman had good things about Glasgow. When he started at Center for us (2 years ago?) they said that he was the one guy on our line that they had the toughest time with. Frankly, watching the ND linemen push Miller back into Gardner last year I was saying to myself "why isn't Glasgow at center?"

Good for him. Keeping his focus on the degree which is the most important thing. Maybe he got some big time offer from a company that he couldn't pass up.

Either way, best of luck to him wherever he goes. Thank you for all the hard work and effort, Jack.

Turrible, yet he was voted by his teammate's as the top Offensive lineman on the team last year.

I don't know why some of us feel the need to belittle a good player and a Wolverine.  It's a big loss for Miller to be leaving the team, he was the best we had on the line.  It's not a crippling loss because I think we have several guys who will develop there this year, but having Miller back would have been great, he would have been a leader and an anchor from the center spot.

I know many will disagree, but I felt he really improved last year. I will catch some flack, but IMHO it was Glasgow and Kalis that had a hard time pulling and finding/holding blocks, not Miller

Hopefully, this means the heralded recruits are finally stepping up.
