THJ had a very rough game.
I'd say it was a rough game for THJ! He was -26...ouch.
Wow, that's RichRod-level tackling by Timmy. Coach Mattison would not be proud.
Timothy made the error of attempting to contain Lebron.
Looks like he had the right idea, just poor execution. If you're gonna hug-foul, hug-foul in the front, not the back. Maybe kiss him once for good measure.
TO MAKE SURE YOU ALL UNDERSTAND IT'S ALL ABOUT THE TEAM 4 MILES TO SCHOOL BOTH WAYS UPHILL IN THE SNOW
It was a very good offensive performance. But yes, losing by 28 and allowing 130 points (60+ attributed to his man) says his overall game (and that of his teammates) was not good enough.
So, what you're saying is that other players on Golden State who were gaurded by other people on the Jazz contributed the other points that brought the total to 130?
Trey put up some nice statistics and that's it - do you think he would say he had a good game after his team got throttled by 28 and allowed 130 points?
Of course he wouldn't. But standard athlete/coach-speak doesn't override the objective evaluation of a player's performance. Bball is a 5 on 5 game. Believe it or not... sometimes 1-2 guys play objectively well but the overall 5 man team gets trounced
Football is a sport that you can have a great game in a losing effort because you only play on one side of the ball. A running back that goes for 350 yards and 4 touchdowns but whose team loses by 28 cannot be faulted for his team's terrible defense that he isn't a part of.
Basketball is not that, you have to evaluate offense and defense in the same breath. The Jazz were -18 when Trey was on the floor with the majority of damage being done by the guy Trey was checking (who is awesome, no doubt).
I don't see why we can't just say Trey had a great offensive stat line without trying to somehow protect the guy from any criticism that should rightly come with participating on the wrong side of a 28 point, 130 point allowed beatdown.
Yeah, OP overstated "greatness" here, but your response seemed overstated, too.
Let's try again -- (1) for a rookie point guard, (2) on a really bad team, (3) going against one of the top 10 players in the league, and (4) perhaps one of the 3-4 best pure scorers, and (5) KNOWING that Burke's got a long way to go on defense,
Trey Burke had a good game last night...
No one is protecting Trey Burke. That's silly. Criticize all you want; I just thought you were being a touch pedantic towards the OP. Curry went for 37 and 11 in a loss to OKC in January. I would say Curry had a great game offensively against OKC and a great game offensively against Utah, too, despite the different results. If Curry poured in all of his points against Burke on isos, then so be it, maybe Burke is a net negative on the court despite what he brings offensively. Nonetheless, for a rookie going against a certified offensive star and on an out-matched team, Burke had a good game last night.
Well said - with those caveats, I would agree with you (and the OP, if that's what he was implying).
I'm a little sensitive to these types of discussions - There are some here (a minority, I'm sure, but a rather vocal one) that would rather see gaudy statistics in a loss than meager statistics in a win. This isn't hyperbole on my part - I remember a football thread where posters specifically said they value their own personal entertainment over winning.
To come to your defense a bit, Trey did have 14 uncontested field goals and scored at least half of those points when the game was well out of hand. And he had a ludicrous 118 touches in the game, so he is gonna have big numbers. However, even though he had all those touches, he only had 3 turnovers, which is ridiculously good.
Stephen Curry was otherworldly, however, as those numbers of his came on 60 touches. That means on average he contributed well over a point every time he touched the ball.
I know it's just a video game but last night I was playing my Pistons season (yeah I know, laugh it up) and played the Jazz. Trey dropped 37 points, 9 assists and had a few rebounds and steals. It was a close game that I won but without Trey they wouldn't have had a chance. He's damn good in NBA2K14.
If you had just said "puts up nice stats", no one would be arguing with you, but instead you said "had a great game", which is hard to back up when you get blown out and your opposing matchups puts up even better stats than you (even if he's an All-Star and you're a rookie).
played against an NBA player you would understand that putting up 24 points and 15 assists in a NBA game is a great game.
