SIAP: NCAA President Speaks about Ongoing NCAA Investigation (Good News For Us)
"I don't regret doing it because sitting on that information, given the comprehensiveness of it, I think we would have put everyone including Michigan in an awful place," Baker said Tuesday night while speaking to a small group of reporters at the NCAA Convention. "At the end of the day, no one believes at this point that Michigan didn't win the national title fair and square. So I think we did the right thing."

They won’t care.
January 10th, 2024 at 8:10 PM ^
Oh it’ll sting them, I know a guy that works at the ticket he says it’ll burn them.

Valentine is bad, but Rico is insufferable. Rico is like Samuel L. Jackson’s character in Django
January 10th, 2024 at 8:17 PM ^
Listening to Valenti puts money in his pocket.
January 10th, 2024 at 10:43 PM ^
I’ve stopped long ago told by friends what he said
January 10th, 2024 at 8:35 PM ^
It's hilarious because Valenti talks so much about the "blue wall" and "Michigan shills" yet he's sitting right next to the biggest State shill there is. Valenti is at least man enough to criticize his school on the air..
January 10th, 2024 at 10:23 PM ^
I stopped listening to 971 when COVID started when I no longer had a commute. But from what I've read about Valentis topics over the past few months, he's deep down the conspiracy rabbit holes from rcmb. Someone here said he was pushing the nonsense point shaving "FBI is on their tail" bs a bit ago. That's just pure MSUanon booger sugar
January 10th, 2024 at 7:54 PM ^
Doesn't sound like much of an apology.
Go fuck yourself NCAA. Or keep fucking Pettiti & Day while Saban videos it. Whatever gets you off. We stopped giving a shit a while ago.
January 10th, 2024 at 8:07 PM ^
If it's an olive branch I think you take it just to get this BS over with. Yet, that's such a BS stance to take. It feels so much like feudal lording over a program.
"Well, we took unprecedented steps and forced them to practically starve but they did survive the winter so the gods clearly want them to live and so shall I"
Like what?! So if Michigan didn't win the entire fucking thing they were cheaters? If an 18-23yo dropped a pass or got hurt or fumbled or whatever at the wrong time they were cheaters and if everything went right they earned their names back?!
That's so awful. Yet, again, you take the olive branch if that's what this is.
January 10th, 2024 at 11:18 PM ^
This entire thing was balanced on the head of a pin. They though it was us balanced on the pin but instead it was the haters.
January 10th, 2024 at 7:59 PM ^
Tell me something I don't know!!!
January 10th, 2024 at 8:00 PM ^
What a day of football. Pete Carroll fired, Nick Saban retires, OSU and MSU fans in shambles over the NCAA president’s comments.
January 10th, 2024 at 9:24 PM ^
Everybody wants Jim Harbaugh so they are clearing their coaching staffs and awaiting his decision………unfortunately for them, he’s coming back!
January 10th, 2024 at 8:02 PM ^
As much as the NCAA sucks, this logic makes some sense
January 10th, 2024 at 8:02 PM ^
Says he was presented evidence by "a third party".
January 10th, 2024 at 11:13 PM ^
More like a third base.
January 10th, 2024 at 8:02 PM ^
RCMB and 11W imploding in 3, 2, 1 . . .
January 10th, 2024 at 8:03 PM ^
I guess Chris Fowler was wrong. It wasn't "for you to decide."
January 10th, 2024 at 8:08 PM ^
Did the follow up question ask about revenue sharing for players?
January 10th, 2024 at 8:20 PM ^
I don’t see it as an olive branch. It sounds more like a rationalization for why the NCAA violated its own rules to share information with the Big Ten prior to concluding its investigation. He can now say the wins were achieved “fair and square“ because the allegations were BS to begin with.
January 10th, 2024 at 10:08 PM ^
I mean isn't the NCAA president commenting yet another internal violation? I realize we've crossed that particular Rubicon multiple times, but just pointing it out again.
January 10th, 2024 at 8:21 PM ^
Just made the mistake of reading the comments on The Athletic article about this. Oh my, people are just freaking delusional. They have so much riding on this whole "cheating" thing, they're still talking vacated wins.
January 10th, 2024 at 8:34 PM ^
At the end of the day, no one believes at this point that Michigan didn't win the national title fair and square.
The Buckeyes just died a thousand deaths.
January 10th, 2024 at 8:36 PM ^
But but but but OSU has been guaranteeing this would all be vacated?!?!?
January 10th, 2024 at 8:37 PM ^
They probably realized if they continued down this road, things would eventually get real messy for a certain coach sitting on third base...
January 10th, 2024 at 8:41 PM ^
Wonder why Mr. Thamel didn’t break this story????
🤔
January 10th, 2024 at 8:42 PM ^
At the end of the day, no one believes at this point that Michigan didn't win the national title fair and square.
Clearly Baker hasn't been on 11W in the last few months. Or any social media, for that matter.
January 10th, 2024 at 8:45 PM ^
I notice we got no such statement from our conference. The NCAA is a bigger friend of the program than the Big Ten office.
January 10th, 2024 at 9:10 PM ^
Not really but better political sense.
Charlie Baker was for many years a successful politician - so he can read the tone and mood. The way the Wolverines finished their season: MSU, PSU, Indiana, OSU, Iowa, Alabama, and Washington.
Tony Petitti tried to pull the tough guy routine - first chance he tries to create a situation to show how tough he can be - only to have it explode in his face. Next year during media day, should be fun especially if nothing comes from the NCAA investigation.
January 10th, 2024 at 8:49 PM ^
Should have board rules.
Maybe 1st thread to 50/100? posts wins?
January 10th, 2024 at 8:55 PM ^
This just makes Petitti’s suspension of Harbaugh look like such an over reach and overreaction. Not a good look for Pettiti.
January 10th, 2024 at 9:26 PM ^
Assuming the condo check cleared, Tony's doing just fine.
January 10th, 2024 at 8:57 PM ^
O.K. But you still never made a spectacle of yourself when Terrell Pryor kept showing up to practices and team meetings in 8 different luxury cars. Or when Nick Saban kept over-signing recruits to the point they moved into on campus housing and then were cut for a last minute 5 star pick up, or when Auburn literally bought Cam Newton....at least not to the level of pearl clutching they accused Michigan of this season.
So why the inconsistency? You still lost your shit when Harbaugh bought those cheeseburgers.
I appreciate this only for the fact that it will torture OSU and MSU. But the NCAA can go fuck themselves. Not as hard as the rest of the Big Ten can go fuck themselves but I digress.
January 10th, 2024 at 9:02 PM ^
I agree with Baker, he did the right thing by exposing it early. That gave Michigan the chance to prove it was all meaningless overblown bullshit.
8-0 after sign-gate.
I shudder to think of the furor our program would have faced in the clown-court of public opinion if the **GASP** completely idiotic and unnecessary i-phone-recordings-for-pizza-money scheme was revealed after the season.
People would assume all the wins were because of Goober McStalions.
January 10th, 2024 at 9:11 PM ^
I’d like to shake this guy’s hand, but I can’t. My hand is in a cast with only the middle finger pointing up.
January 10th, 2024 at 9:37 PM ^
We love to hate on the NCAA and the B1G, but in hindsight, they did us an inadvertent favor. Had they slow-played any of this, we might be in a much different spot right now.
January 10th, 2024 at 9:39 PM ^
Does that statement make any logical sense whatsoever?
January 10th, 2024 at 10:03 PM ^
Yes, it does. They had (in their view) compelling evidence that Stalions was cheating and could impact the outcomes of games. They intervened to eliminate the cheating in the middle of the season. With the cheating eliminated, all wins thereafter are pure. Further, the wins prior are pretty clearly pure, given the large margins of victory and the outcomes of the final games.
January 10th, 2024 at 10:25 PM ^
“Won fair and square” and “helped legitimize” our championship seem reassuring and unambiguous. Especially since he didn’t have to say anything there.
Meanwhle, heads are indeed asploding at 11W. Some are resigned angrily while a loud minority lunatic parsing fringe thinks Baker’s comments somehow indicate that we are getting the death penalty. Oh, and the level-headed “you can give up hoping” comments are getting greyed out. Crazy.
January 10th, 2024 at 11:22 PM ^
It all gets greyed out. Strangest shit ive ever seen.
January 10th, 2024 at 11:45 PM ^
Yeah, that’s part of the problem there, right? Just grey out all the stuff you don’t agree with. Who needs rational discussion?
The anti-intellectual culture there couldn’t be more clearly on display.
January 10th, 2024 at 10:26 PM ^
LOLOLOLOL
How is it that the season is over but we’re still racking up W’s over our cro-magnon rivals??!??!
