Michigan Hasn't Watched Film On iPads Since Early November
When pressed about it, JJ, Coach Moore, and Roman Wilson all shared that Michigan hasn't been watching film on the iPads since early November.
So shocker, this isn't as big of a deal as the media has made it out to be.
I have a little familiarity with what's going on (not in a technical since)...every school that uses Catapult has their own secure in-house server or network. But when they're on the iPads, it's a cloud network, they're using their personal Wi-Fi, etc.

So should we blame Alabama for this? They seem to be blaming us.
(Or more likely, playing coy with the media so that the media blames us for them.)

Catapult owned by OSU grad no? There was some allegations that they were accessing the data and sending to schools like OSU, UGA, and Bama if I remember correctly.
December 29th, 2023 at 3:29 PM ^
I thought it was publicly traded (in Australia?).
I think you might be conflating two separate allegations: (1) Alabama, Mississippi and Tennessee supposedly had things set up so at halftime of their home games they could watch catapult video from the first half (a violation as we know) and (2) a couple of former OSU video guys now working for Catapult had given them PSU practice video.
There's nothing odd in former OSU video guys working there; I'm guessing there's representation from pretty much everywhere. What else would their prospective employee pool be?

Yeah, it appears Catapult has some security issues and so nobody really trusts their systems if they aren't in a controlled environment. So yeah, not a surprise that teams would be careful, and that lazy media types would assume it's because teams are worried about Michigan cheating and never think to follow up and see if it was due to something beyond the ghosts of Connor Stallions.

If Michigan has a secure in-house server with secure Wi-Fi and user authentication protocols, couldn’t JJ open his iPad, securely connect, and watch videos without the data steam ever leaving Schembechler Hall?
December 29th, 2023 at 3:32 PM ^
I assume that's what they have set up with the coaches, but they may not be set up to have 100+ devices remotely connecting to the in-house servers, to say nothing of the fact they're still going to have to connect to the internet via whatever facility WiFi they've got on hand. I am not aware of UM's IT setup but I've seen a couple of posts on other forums talking about security concerns with Catapult and so I wouldn't be shocked if these aren't the preferred methods being deployed.

Time to pull of a modern day techie version of the Mike Leach?
December 29th, 2023 at 2:52 PM ^
The PR campaign wins again. Anything that anybody else does is huge news because they have to defend themselves against those cheating cheaters at Michigan. But if Michigan does the same things, there is nothing to see here, because cheating cheaters deserve what's coming to them. The media loves an echo chamber.
I wonder what is the actual financial cost of the damage done to Michigan's reputation as an institution. All just so Ryan Day can keep his job despite losing to Michigan again? So pathetic. Let's win it all and let them die mad.
December 29th, 2023 at 3:46 PM ^
Yes, that's what I've been thinking all along this mad media anti-Michigan/Harbaugh campaign has damaged the Universities reputation and that has to have a financial impact on the brand. But, memories are so short these days maybe/hopefully it will soon wear off.

Or maybe our leadership can actually have stones and fight back against the NCAA and OSU. Our leadership’s reaction of laying down to the NCAA and not exposing OSU on what they do basically confirmed to OSU and NCAA why they did what they did. This is a Michigan problem.

I bet hacking into other teams' cloud-based accounts isn't an NCAA violation or a Big Ten sportsmanship policy violation--unless it's done by Michigan.
Isn't it, though, an actual crime?
December 29th, 2023 at 5:06 PM ^
It’s only a violation if someone (not a member of the staff) is on an opponent’s campus, using antiquated digital technology. So, if you see someone using a dial-up modem, be wary.

The talking points that the media comes up with for sports, politics, local news, etc. is why almost all media and journalists are looked at as a joke anymore.
December 29th, 2023 at 3:40 PM ^
So to self-scout, they have to hack themselves?

From what I can tell the only additional info you could really access is practice film. I suppose you might get other information about players such as their 40 times but I doubt that is too valuable.
December 29th, 2023 at 3:49 PM ^
This is a lot different than not watching video because of Michigan sign stealers, “personally.”
December 29th, 2023 at 4:04 PM ^
Why can’t this have been reported, by, you know, an actual media source not affiliated with the school? There are two key problems: Michigan being treated differently than other schools who do far worse, which is related to the second problem of terrible leadership. Our leaders never fight back against anyone, whether it’s the NCAA, OSU, etc., they STILL, even after this year, bow down to NCAA authority instead of seeing them who they are, institute a bogus no pay for play standard that only hurts the team’s recruiting and talent level, and that nobody seems to have the power to fire Warde, who may be the worst athletic director supporting teams in a very long time. All of these direct back to weak leadership and not adjusting. If this year didn’t galvanize UM to do it, I’m not sure anything will. They’ll accept NIL 10 years down the road when we’re too far behind to catch up.
December 29th, 2023 at 4:15 PM ^
Bama players brought it up first at a press conference, so it was reported as a one-sided thing. One player mentioned the sign stealing peripherally so the media decided to try to bring that into the story--that's where I blame the media. It had nothing to do with signs stealing, obviously. How could you possibly make a connection there?
In response, Roman Wilson brought it up today from Michigan's perspective, backed up by Sherrone Moore when asked. So now there are outlets reporting it as well.
I don't have a list of all the outlets that reported one and not the other, but the AP, Tuscaloosa News, and Athlon have updated to include Michigan's comments. Not sure about CBSsports, USAToday, Detroit News, and Yahoo. Looks like they only have the Alabama comments still.
December 29th, 2023 at 4:30 PM ^
I expect ESPN to have this story on the front page for two days like Bama did.
The bad press Michigan gets is crazy to witness. Rick neuheisel tried to say today that Helow told Alabama we could steal iPad info and that’s why Alabama was not watching film.
Talk about irresponsible journalism. I doubt he follows up with anything about M doing the same thing.
December 29th, 2023 at 5:10 PM ^
An equation for you…. Neuheisel = Finebaum. True or False?
Of course - there are equivalents too. Ignorance + stupidity = 95%+ of media commenters.
December 29th, 2023 at 5:17 PM ^
Neuheisel is horrible, he also cited JJ's stats: "with and without C.S. as proof that we were benefitting, never mind that we were playing better defenses and JJ was hurt, no, it was the "sign-stealing."
The only way to shut people up is to win and then it probably still will not, but I don't care.

That’s interesting, man. Since the customers each have a server hosted on-prem, makes a fella wonder why they couldn’t configure the tablets to use a vpn to access their network and local system, as opposed to relying on a publicly accessible cloud system as they are.
